- Abstract:
- "An old hag leans back in an armchair of antique pattern; she is beset with cats which swarm round her, and turns her head with a macabre smile to kiss one on the mouth; her left hand rests on a cat standing on the table beside her. Two sit in her lap, another scrambles up her skirts. On a cushion on the floor are two large cats and two kittens; two others lap from a bowl. Others scramble and fight on the back of her chair. A pretty young woman stands (right) holding a cat which is tightly wrapped up, and feeding it from a spoon. The cats are large and muscular, with a trace of bull-dog. On the table are a box of 'Rappe', a decanter of 'Ratafia' with a glass, a large bowl of 'Cat Lap', and a paper: 'Essay on Old Maids'. Behind are ancient stone walls, and windows with escutcheons on which are cats. The woman's shoes are of archaic pattern"--British Museum online catalogue.

- Abstract:
- "Four elderly parsons, grossly fat, apparently Fellows of Brasenose College, are seated in stuffed arm-chairs at a small dinner-table. One (right) carves a capon, another ladles soup from a tureen, the others drink. One servant hands wine, another brings in a bowl, into which his nose drips as in Swift's 'Directions to Servants' (cf. British Museum Satires No. 10918). A third in the doorway, more unkempt than the others, brings in a sucking-pig. On the floor (right) is a paper: 'A New form of Prayer, Gravy Soup, Mock Turtle, 'Cods Head', 'Turbott', 'Haunch of Venison', 'Stewed Carp', 'Roast Ducks', 'Pidgeon Rye', 'Woodcocks', 'Jelly', 'Marrow Pudding'. On the left are a wine-cooler, many bottles, three labelled 'Burg[undy]', 'Ho[ck]', 'Clar[et]', a loving-cup, a punchbowl inscribed 'Bowl for a Bishop', with lemons, a cork-screw, and the lid of the tureen. On the walls are pictures: 'Bench of Bi[shops]' [in reversed characters], parsons carousing at a table, some lolling in easy chairs; 'Ecclesiastical Court', an elderly man (or woman) doing penance in a sheet and holding a candle; 'View of Brazen Nose Col.', a college quadrangle; a picture of an anchorite in the wilderness, holding a cross; 'Susannah' [and the Elders]; 'Portrait of S . . . Fellow Commoner of Braze[nose]' [the subject cut off by the upper margin]. There are also two notices, partly obscured, on the wall: 'This Day Being Proclaimed A Fast . . . Church', and 'List of Great Tythes Church Lands . . '."--British Museum online catalogue.

- Abstract:
- "The left of the stage seen from the right with part of the orchestra in the foreground, and two stage-boxes on the left. The singer, a handsome young man of feminine appearance, bows, hands on heart, singing loudly. He wears quasi-Roman armour, with an enormous feathered helmet, a cloak, bare arms and legs, with cothurnes. In the centre of the lower box a stout man in regimentals yawns violently, looking disparagingly at the singer. A handsome lady next him turns her head towards the stage. Four other men in the box are amused or quizzical; one uses an ear-trumpet. In the upper box an elderly 'cit' grimaces with angry contempt; his wife yawns cavernously, as does a head in the background. The orchestra sit facing each other; all are elderly; all register active lack of appreciation."--British Museum online catalogue.

- "An aged man with a Jewish profile unlocks a large padlock on an iron-studded door under a vaulted portico. Beside him stands a man dressed like a sailor with a basket of poultry and fish on his head, and a straw-covered flask in his hand. An area railing is also padlocked, but behind the railing is a handsome young officer on a ladder, helping a pretty girl out of the window. The old man wears old-fashioned dress with a tie-wig, and two coats, one worn like a cape with the sleeves empty. His crutched stick leans against the door. A corbel above the door is a grotesque figure with a Jewish profile, supporting a burden."--British Museum online catalogue.
