Belonged to Giuseppe (Joseph) Martini of Lugano. Purchased from H. P. Kraus in 1955., Binding: Nineteenth century, Italy. Original sewing on three slit straps. Quarter bound in white sheepskin. The beech boards are early, 15th century, with title written twice on front and once on back. A leaf-shaped catch on the lower board, the upper one cut in for a clasp strap. Spine covering and clasp strap are recent additions., Initials, 5-line, at beginning of text: red with delicate black penwork designs. Heading and each verbum in red; synonyms connected by a curving red line., and Script: Written in a well formed round gothic bookhand by a single scribe.

Binding: Fifteenth century, Italy. Vellum stays in and outside the quires. Original sewing on three tawed skin, slit straps which are laced through tunnels in the edges of wooden boards to channels on the outside and pegged. Plain, wound endbands are sewn on tawed skin cores laced or laid in grooves on the outside of the boards. Quarter bound with brown leather, probably a later addition, as perhaps are the clasp straps. Two leaf-shaped catches and inscription in ink on the lower board: "Lucanus [?]". Front pastedown and flyleaf from a lectionary (Italy, 1050-1100); back flyleaf and pastedown from a homiliary (Northern Italy, 950-1000); on the pastedown, a homily on submission to the will of God, probably a continuation of the same text as on the flyleaf., Crudely executed penwork initials in red, f. 1r only; spaces for decorative initials at beginning of each book have sketches in brown ink (contemporary?) or are left unfilled. Binding: 20th-21st centuries, not digitized. Plain brown leather over cardboard. Yellowish paper endleaves., Paragraph marks in red. All the majuscules, those at the opening of the verses and the others, are heightened with dark yellow. The Satires open with a 2-line flourished initial (a 3-line flourished initial for Satire 6) with marginal extensions, alternately in red with purple penwork and blue with red penwork., and Script: Copied by one hand writing Italian Gothica Hybrida Libraria, with a preference for round r and d with relatively short shaft.

Binding: ca. 1700 (repaired in 1993 by P. Dusel). Brown sprinkled calf over cardboard, gold-tooled: the covers decorated with a double fillet frame, the spine, with seven raised bands, richly decorated. In the second compartment a red title label with gold-tooled inscription “CESARIS / COMMENT/ARII .Ms.” Red edges., Collection of Bernard M. Rosenthal, Berkeley (MS 174). Purchased from Rosenthal on the Edwin J. Beinecke Fund., Pale red headings in Humanistica Textualis, sometimes missing, especially towards the end of the codex. Running headlines in the same colour and by the same hand, “L” in the middle of the verso page, the number in the middle and the title at right on the recto page. Gothic initials at the head of the subdivisions of the text as sketched above (including f. 69r): (1) foliate initials in Lombard style in red and green, filled with blue heightened with white penwork, on a square gold background, up to f. 51r; the opening one (f. 1r) is 9 lines high and has penwork extensions ending in leaves in the left and upper margin (the latter interfering with the heading); the others are 4-5 lines high and have similar sprays in the left margin only; (2) Starting f. 68v (art. 2) blue flourished initials (4-6 lines) with red penwork, the latter extending in the margin., and Script: Copied by one scribe writing a small Gothico-Humanistica with features close to Gothica Semitextualis Libraria.

Arts. 5-9, a series of exordia, appear to be school exercises in Latin prose composition, all poorly written and heavily corrected. They follow approximately the text of Justinus' Epitoma, but are much abbreviated; the Latin is often incomprehensible without a prior knowledge of the historical narrative. 10) Short unidentified passages on Epirus.

Binding: Sixteenth century, Italy (Italo-Greek?). Own endleaves. Unusual sewing through three spine linings, the central one paper. An endband of two joined lines of chain stitching is sewn on a largely exposed leather core. The flush paste boards are held on by the cloth spine linings which extend on either side of them and are glued to them. Covered in brown goatskin with rope interlace crosses and random small tools. Traces of four ribbon ties., First initial for each letter of the Roman alphabet: plain red or blue majuscules, 4- to 2-line. On recto, all Latin words begin with bright blue 1-line initials, on verso all begin with bright red; color scheme reverses on f. 7v to end. Art. 2, f. 1r, in pale red., Purchased from B. Rosenthal in 1955 by Thomas E. Marston., Script: Latin words written in humanistic bookhand; Greek words in a neat Greek minuscule., and Watermarks, in gutter: similar in general design to Briquet Couronne 4659; two unidentified serpents.

Large guide letters at the left of the initials., On the originally blank f. 6v a later hand has written notes in a very rapid Gothica Cursiva most difficult to decipher., and Script: Copied by one hand in Humanistica Cursiva under Gothic influence and of low quality.
