He looks with a sly leer to the right, where a little band of ragged and emaciated French soldiers hurry towards him making gestures of dismay. He wears the embroidered fastened coat or tunic with a sash of authentic portraits, without a hat; he points up towards a vision in the sky surrounded by massive clouds of a sceptre and imperial crown superimposed on the revolutionary fasces and axe. Above the general flies a figure of Fame, smiling sardonically and pointing down derisively. Two soldiers in cocked hats who stand in the boat waiting for Bonaparte to embark greedily hug large money-bags. A plank slants from the boat to the shore. The boat has a figure-head composed of two heads facing opposite ways wearing a single coronet. Behind the French troops is a small encampment with tricolour tents and flags. "Below the title: 'Barrass (then in Power) being tired of Josephine, promised Buonaparte a promotion, on condition that he would take her off his hands; - Barrass had, as usual, drank freely, & placed Buonaparte behind a Screen, while he amused himself with these two Ladies, who were then his humble dependents, - Madame Talian is a beautiful Woman, tall & elegant; - Josephine is smaller & thin, with bad Teeth, something like Cloves, - it is needless to add that Buonaparte accepted the Promotion & the Lady, - now, - Empress of France!' In the centre of the design the two women dance, veiled by transparent drapery which is framed by a heavy festooned curtain. On the r., in full light, sits Barras, lolling tipsily in an ornate armchair. On the left., in shadow, Bonaparte lifts the curtain to stare intently at Josephine. The women are naked, except for gartered stockings, slippers, bracelets, and barbaric ear-rings. They dance, beating tambourines, and are as described, Mme Tallien in back view, Josephine directed towards Bonaparte but looking over her right. shoulder. Their hair hangs in snaky locks below the waist. Barras' chair or Directorial throne has a draped canopy, its back is surmounted by a realistic figure of an infant Bacchus among grapes wearing a bonnet rouge and holding up a full glass and a bottle resembling a Chianti flask. Similar flasks and a cornucopia with grapes flank the Bacchus. Barras, bloated and brandy-faced, holds a glass, spilling the contents. Before him is an ornate round writing-table; its legs are carved with satyrs' heads and terminate in hooves. A decanter of 'Burgundy' stands on a paper headed 'Egypt'; 'Commission pour Buonaparte', above the signature, 'Barrass'. There is also a bottle of 'Mareschino', decanters, and glasses. Other bottles and a broken glass lie on the floor. On the wall an oval frame is inscribed 'Messalina'; the picture is hidden by the curtain framing the dancers. Bonaparte leans forward, holding his cocked hat behind his back. He wears a long military coat with heavy sword and boots. Behind him is a high folding screen. On this are skulls wearing bonnets rouges, and, above, partly concealed by the curtain, a shadowy crown. "Fox and his wife, facing the spectator, sleep in a magnificent , ducal bed, whose head and curtains form a background to the design. They disturbed by nightmares. Fox extends both arms in gloomy terror as Naooleon springs on his bed (r.) and seizes the collar of his night-shirt, the other side of which is tugged at by the ghost of Pitt (l.) who floats towards him dressed in a shroud, and supporting the curtain with his left. arm. Pitt exclaims: "Awake, arise, or be for ever fall'n!" Fox's head is jerked forward, his hair rises, and his (bonnet-rouge) night-cap falls off. Napoleon leaps from a cannon on which his left. toe rests. It is inscribed 'Pour Subjuguer le Monde' [cf. BMSat 10599, &c.]. Behind it, and forming a background to the right. of the design, are clouds of fiery smoke, from which emerge a forest of spears with an imperial eagle topping a banner inscribed: 'Horrors of Invasion'. Napoleon wears his feathered bicorne with spurred jack-boots and raises his sword fiercely. An eagle whose (tricolour) collar is inscribed 'Prussia hovers menacingly over Fox'. The fringed bed-cover is covered with a pattern of roses; from under it (l.) project heavy jagged thorn-branches with a few roses; the branches are inscribed: 'India Roses', 'Emancipation Roses', 'French Roses', 'Coalition Roses', 'Volunteer Roses'. A ghastly creature, Death, crawls from under the coverlet, which rests on the carpeted floor: a grinning skull-like jaw appears; a corpse-like arm holds up an hour-glass whose sands are almost run out. Round the arm is twined a tricolour ribbon inscribed 'Intemperance', 'Drosy [sic]', 'Dissolution'; its r. hand clutches a spear. A bull-dog, its collar inscribed 'John Bull', snarls savagely at Napoleon, resting its fore-paws on the foot of the bed: it befouls a paper: 'List of the N[ew] Broad-Bottom Administr[ation] [cf. He is in 'profil perdu', and grips the frantic animal by the neck. On the right are the hounds, eager for the kill; others swim across a stream on the farther side of which members of the hunt are galloping up, tiny figures led by Pitt, who echoes "Tally ho" to the King's "Tally-ho! - Tally-ho! - ho! - ho!- ho!" The King stands under a gnarled oak. "The five chief members of the Cabinet sleep round a small round table on which are punch-bowl (decorated with the Royal Arms), bottles of 'Port' and 'Madeira', and glasses. Portland sits full face, above the others, in a Gothic chair, a crutch beside him, one gouty bandaged hand supported by his Garter ribbon; Hawkesbury (r.) leans against him in profile to the right. Perceval, in his Chancellor of the Exchequer's gown, sits on Portland's r., leaning on the table. Facing each other sit Castlereagh (l.) and Canning (r.), leaning back in their chairs. From the former's coat-pocket hangs a long scroll, resting on the floor, headed 'Defence of the Country. Mr Speaker.' It is covered with meaningless arrangements of letters which dwindle into illegibility: 'aaaa, ccccc, iiiii [&c.]'. At the end: 'Nine Hours & a half long'. On the back of his chair and against his head is poised a squalling cat; under its paws is a piece of music: 'Air by Catalani' [see BMSat 10792, &c.]. Manning's legs are stretched out on the back of Melville [Mulgrave in W. & E. The profile and a tartan plaid indicate Melville.] who lies face downwards under the table, clutching a bottle. In his pocket is a paper: 'Secret Correspondence from Copenhagen' [cf. BMSat 11564]. All register delight at their entrancing dreams. On the floor (r.) used (gold) plates are stacked, all inscribed 'Treasury'. Two rats nibble at them; beside them lies a 'Bill of Fare - 1st Course Loaves & Fishes - 2d Course Loaves & Fishes [&c., &c.]'. Empty bottles are scattered about. Clouds rise from Canning's head and float above the other sleepers, supporting their vision, which, framed in clouds, fills the upper part of the design. Britannia rides in a triumphal car shaped like a boat with the British Lion as figure-head. She holds a trident and an olive branch. Behind the car, chained to the axles, walks a dejected Napoleon. Behind him is a huge polar bear (Russia), muzzled, and on a chain. Last come three captive sovereigns, some of the 'gingerbread kings', see BMSat 10518. They are followed by a cheering crowd with a flag inscribed 'Britannia rules the World'. From the car flies a Union flag, honourably tattered. The car is drawn by a huge bull (John Bull), led by a sailor, who is preceded by soldiers, one beating a drum another blowing a trumpet. "Napoleon sits on the shoulder of Talleyrand gleefully peering through a large rolled document at the Channel, where the French flotilla is being destroyed by shells from British ships. Talleyrand stands behind the gun embrasures of a fortress on a cliff at whose base the gunboats are foundering. He wears a general's uniform with a long cloak; the crown of his cocked hat is a bishop's mitre. He holds Bonaparte's legs, grinning delightedly. Napoleon's document is 'Talleyrand's plan for Invading Great Britain'; he says: "O my dear Talley, what a glorious sight! - we've worked up Johnny Bull into a fine passion! - my good fortune never leaves me! - I shall now get rid of a hundred- Thousand French Cut Throats whom I was so afraid of! - O my dear Talley, this beats the Egyptian Poisoning hollow! - Bravo, Johnny! - pepper 'em, Johnny!" "Pitt is borne upwards (left to right) in a chariot of swirling clouds of flame drawn by four horses abreast, and snorting fire, while his eyes are fixed on a broad beam of light inscribed 'Immortality'. He flings down his mantle, which his disciples below hold up their arms to receive. The mantle is blue faced with red (the colours of the Windsor uniform); on it a flaming sword lies across a pair of balanced scales, symbolizing Justice. Rays from the mantle strike down on the disciples; thunderbolts radiate from it, against the 'Republican-Mantle' with which the ghost of Fox tries to shelter the Opposition, and also against a tiny Napoleon. The disciples are grouped on a cliff, 'The Rock of Ages', rising from the sea. They surround a rectangular altar, of quasi-classical shape: 'The Altar of the Constitution'. Its two pilasters are 'Prudence' and 'Fortitude'. On this is a book inscribed 'Truth' on which is a royal crown. At its base lies 'Magna Charta'. The central and most prominent of the disciples, in the place of Elisha, is Canning, as the pupil of Pitt (see BMSat 10972); he stands behind the altar. Before it kneel Eldon (left) in Chancellor's wig and gown with the Purse of the Great Seal, and Perceval (right) in the gown of the Chancellor of the Exchequer. Next to Eldon (left) kneels Portland. On the right, and in the foreground, separated from the 'Rock of Ages' by a narrow chasm, is the 'Broad-Bottom-Dunghill' [cf. BMSat 10530]. On this are the Opposition fleeing in terror from the thunderbolts from the Mande despite the gigantic figure of Fox who flies over them, protectingly spreading his cloak. Fox is naked under his cloak, except for a bonnet rouge, and a shroud which floats back from his head. He has webbed wings and a cloven hoof, and he looks up at the Mantle in angry terror. His cloak is set on fire by a thunderbolt. The most prominent of the 'Priests of Baal' is Grenville, who stoops, clutching at his rent breeches; a cardinal's hat flies from his head (cf.
