Abstract:
Letters from Olga Rudge to Linda Melton, accompanied by a small group of papers relating to Ezra Pound. The letters date from between 1947 and 1960 and are almost entirely concerned with Rudge's efforts to win Pound's freedom from American custody in St. Elizabeth's Hospital. Rudge describes her own projects, including the publication of "if this be treason......" and her collection of affadavits in support of Pound's return to Italy; complains of lack of cooperation from Pound's friends, including Eliot; and outlines her own hopes to visit Pound. Other subjects include her daughter and grandchildren; her work for the Accademia Musicale Chigiana; and her plans to rent her house at 252 Dorsoduro in Venice to tourists. There is also one letter and a Christmas card to Melton from Pound's mother, Isabel Weston Pound. and TL from Pound to T. S. Eliot, 1936 Jun 16, accompanied by a TL from Pound to "Dear whale" which contains a poem by Pound ("Possum is DEAD!/ 'Well ! Carry on! the walrus said....").

Among the men who accompanied MacDonald on the trips were L. I. Hewes, Deputy Chief Engineer of the Bureau, mechanics George E. Campbell and William Gildersleeve, H. S. Fairbank, and Pyke Johnson. A mounted newspaper clipping from the July 22, 1925 issue of the Rocky Mountain News regarding MacDonald's visit to Colorado and federal funds for Colorado highway projects is laid in the second log. and Three typescript orginal and carbon copy logs of road inspection trips in the western United States made by MacDonald between 1922 and 1927. The three logs, dated July 6-August 10, 1922, June 15-July 29, 1925, and September 14-October 26, 1927, contain itineraries, mileage, remarks, and captioned photographs documenting the trips in California, Utah, Idaho, Oregon, Washington, Montana, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, and Colorado. The photographs document road conditions; construction projects; the inspectors; Taos Pueblo, New Mexico; and scenery, particularly Bryce Canyon and Zion National Parks in Utah, the Grand Canyon, Mesa Verde, Colorado, and the Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks in Wyoming.
