Manuscript on paper of Frère Laurent, Somme le Roi (The Book of Vices and Virtues). Written presumably for Agnes of Burgundy, Duchess of Bourbon, who died at Moulins-sur-Allier in 1476.
Description:
At the beginning of each book there are spaces (9 to 13 lines) left blank for miniatures. 4- to 2-line initials for each book and for a few chapters, gold against blue and red grounds with silver or white filigree, with coarse gold ivy and black hair-spray. 2-line initials in blue or red for chapters; 1-line initials, blue or red, in table of contents. All initials with guide-letters. Chapter numbers and paragraph marks in red. Rubrics throughout., Binding: Eighteenth century. Edges red. Brown calf, spine gold-tooled, with a red label: "Miroir du Monde M. S. S. Antiq.", Script: Written by two scribes in batarde script. Scribe 1) ff. 1r-100v, 131r-217v; Scribe 2) ff. 101r-130v, 217v-312r, 313r., and Watermarks: ff. ii-5, Briquet Armoiries 1876; ff. 6-315, similar to Briquet Lettre P 8527.

At the beginning of each Gospel, full-page initials, f. 9r (Matthew) and f. 71r (Mark) incorporating symbols of the Evangelists; f. 9r with gold foliate scrolls with silver tendrils, one with a pink dragon-head terminal, against blue, light green and orange; f. 71r gold and silver, with spiraling foliage in shaded blue, orange and green, supported by a pink and gold dragon; both followed by display capitals in alternate lines of gold and silver, shaded in blue. Large initials in gold and silver as above, 2-line, f. 1r, and 6- or 5-line, ff. 3r, 5r, 5v, and 68v, for prefaces, epistles and prologues. 3-line initials, as above, for chapter divisions. 1-line initials throughout, inner margin, orange, filled with gold and/or silver. Binding: Nineteenth century. Vellum case with a black label, gold-tooled, and arms of Athelstan Riley on covers. Bound by John R. Hering, London, active 1817-35., Part I: Initials, 12- to 2-line, red, green, blue, with exuberant designs in contrasting colors that often extend full length of folio, some trimmed. Headings in red. Part II: Decorative initials, 8- to 2-line, alternate red and blue, with designs in contrasting colors; plain initials, 1-line, some with simple ornamentation, in red or blue throughout. Heading in red. Guide-letters in inner margin. Part III: Simple initials, a few with designs. Paragraphs marks in red and/or black. Guide-letters in outer and inner margins; notes to rubricator perpendicular to written space in gutter and outer margin. Headings in red., and Script: Each part written by a different scribe, all in early gothic bookhand.

Binding: Nineteenth century. Brown, originally black, sheepskin; stamped in gold on the spine: "Psaterium." Red edges., Script: Written in liturgical gothic bookhand by one scribe., and Three full-page miniatures of mediocre quality. Each miniature set in a narrow frame of gold, black, pink, and white; full border of blue and gold acanthus leaves, red, pink, and blue flowers and strawberries, and black pen flecks. One 7-line historiated initial on f. 216r (Flemish Prayers): Pieta, pink with white highlights on gold; full border as above; text separated from border by a narrow band attached to initial of gold and pink, edged in black. Illuminated 5-line initials with full borders (eg. ff. 13r, 18r, 28r), pink or blue with white highlights on gold, filled with blue or pink trilobe leaves. 2-line initials, gold on pink and blue with white highlights, one on f. 92r (Advent Office) with a band attached, as above, and small sections of border, as above; one 3-line initial on f. 179r (Obsecro te) in similar manner. 1-line initials, blue with red penwork and gold with black penwork; initials within text washed in yellow. KL monograms as 2-line initials; Latin names of months and important feasts in red. Line fillers: oblique lines with dots attached, stylized plant motifs, dots, etc., in blue or gold. Rubrics in faded red.
