A volume with drawings attributed to Edward D. Blake that document his military service with the 8th Infantry Regiment of the United States Army, 1849-1861., Drawings include depictions of his quarters and other buildings at various military installations and outposts, which include Las Vegas and Fort Union in New Mexico, Fort Gibson in Oklahoma, and Camp Floyd (later known as Fort Crittenden) in Utah. Other drawings include portrait studies and landscape scenes, including a view of the Rio Grande above El Paso, New Mexico., and Six leaves consist of trompe-l'oeil depictions of sixty calling cards with autographs, primarily from his fellow officers in the United States Army. Many of the autographs include annotations about the military service of the signatories before and during the American Civil War.
Description:
Edward D. Blake (1826-1882) graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1847, and served during the Mexican War as a Second Lieutenant with the 2nd Infantry Regiment and 8th Infantry Regiment. He continued to serve with the 8th Infantry Regiment and earned the rank of Captain in 1860. In 1861, he resigned his commission and served as a Lieutenant Colonel and Assistant Adjutant General in the Confederate Army as a Commandant of Conscripts. After the American Civil War he was a merchant in Charleston, South Carolina., Items in the volume were probably not compiled and bound by Blake, which accounts for the transcription error of his name on the title page as "E. V. Blake.", Most versos blank, not digitized., and Purchased from the William Reese Company on the Arthur Corbitt Hoskins Memorial Fund, 2007.
