Thompson's diary describes his 1850 journey from St. Joseph to Sacramento and a trip home in 1851 from Nevada City by the Isthmus. Notes on the westward trip include distances and camps. He went overland to South Pass, Sublette's Cut-off, Fort Hall, the California Trail, the Humboldt and Truckee, and Nevada City. Returning, Thompson sailed from San Francisco on the Olive Branch for Panama, and from Chagres on the North America for New Orleans, reaching Lagrange, [Missouri ?].
