"A similar scene to BM Satires 12349, but more calamitous and in a larger cabin. Through the roof-light of the cabin passengers under umbrellas are seen on deck. A sailor stands on a table to hand up a bucket, spilling the contents disastrously, to another who leans through the aperture, dropping a mop on a woman below. Tables tilt violently, upsetting those seated at them. A ham, a sucking-pig, a German sausage, a bottle of wine, &c, slide or crash to the floor. A man holds up a bottle of Spruce [beer], so that its exploding contents strike the face of a falling woman. There are many other incidents. Passengers lie in the two tiers of berths or struggle from them; others sit on lateral benches or sleep on the floor."--British Museum online catalogue

The fishwives stalls are in the foreground with the masts of ship vessels behind, and among them one tall smoking funnel. The market buildings are on the right. The foreground is more crowded than in other Billingsgate prints. The chief feature is an irate woman seated on an upturned tub beside her stall, berating a lady in a riding-habit who holds a huge fish's head. Beside the latter is another lady, disconcerted. Two liveried servants are amond the crowd. Lady Caroline Lamb and a young marchioness, both 'in disguise', go to the market to hear the traditional language of the fishwives, this Lady Caroline provokes by disparaging a fish.
