An ugly foppish apothecary, with drink-blotched profile, kneels at the feet of a handsome young woman, one hand on his breast, the other pointing to a cloth at his feet on which are spread clyster-pipes, knife, pestle and mortar, and a bottle: 'Elixer of Life Drops'. On the other side of the counter a stout man fills a glass from a bottle. Behind him are huge casks, one inscribed 'Booths Best Gin'. The place is brightly lit, with heavy shadows.
