The 65th Colored Infantry Regiment organized March 11, 1864. It performed garrison duty at Morganza, La., until May 1865 when it moved to Port Hudson, La., and performed garrison duty there and at Baton Rouge and in Northern District of Louisiana until January 1867. Mustered out January 8, 1867., The 67th Colored Infantry Regiment organized March 11, 1864. It moved from Benton Barracks, Mo., to Port Hudson, La., then to Morganza, La., and stayed there until June 1865. John Nevin King served in the Mexican War and in 1850 went overland to California, where he served in the Quartermaster's Department and did some prospecting for gold before joining the Northwest Boundary Survey in 1857. During the Civil War he served with General John G. Parke, afterwards returning to the Northwest where he became Chief Commissary officer of the Department of Oregon. and Manuscript captions on mounts. Civil War tax stamps (1864-1866) on some mounts.

Barrett was secretary of the New York Mercantile Exchange and the editor of American Grocer when he travelled from New York to California in order to study that state's "contribution to the world food supply." The newspaper clippings represent the letters he sent back to the American Grocer, published under the heading "From Ocean to Ocean: Notes by the Way" in 1889., Accompanied by two folders, one containing a 26-page typescript with manuscript annotations describing the cross-country trip illustrated in the album, and the other containing clippings and miscellaneous commercial photographs of scenery along the route of the trip., and Album pages are extremely fragile.
