- S. Francis's diary from 1841-1845 describes country life in Vermont and for 1845-1852 records weather, crops, and politics in Illinois. The diary describes an 1852 trip from Illinois to Oregon by way of Des Moines, Kanesville, the Platte to Fort Laramie, the Salt Lake Road, Fort Boise, and Oregon City. Francis traveled with the Wilson and Sheppard families. The account continues for 1852-1862 with notes on farm life in Oregon and comments on the state of the nation prior to the Civil War.

- Gift of William Robertson Coe., Notarized attestation of the author's daughter, Dora Francis Frazer, April 1936, is bound with the manuscript., and S. Francis, who was a farmer in Barnard, Vermont, moved his family to Illinois in 1846 and emigrated to Oregon in 1852.
