Abstract:
"The patient lies in a large bed (right), sourly watching four ugly doctors (left) who sit in consultation, their knees close together. Two put old-fashioned gold-headed canes to their mouths. They say respectively: "We must throw in the Bark" [quinine]; "It is all brought on by Drinking"; What you say is very true"; "We must abate the thirst and then cure the fever". The patient says: "Aye aye. I hear you but Ill tell you how to save half the trouble cure the fever, & send me a nice cool tankard of Madeira and Ill abate the thirst myself"."--British Museum online catalogue

"The interior of an apothecary's room: jars on shelves; a counter with drawers, pestle and mortar, flasks, &c. A bust of Galen stands on the lintel of the door (right). An alarmed undergraduate in cap and gown stands clasping his stomach. The doctor faces him triumphantly, with raised arms and holding a pill-box. His man, who wears an apron, walks off with a large box inscribed 'Anti-Fibbibus'. The (prose) inscription below the title relates that a 'College Wag' called on a 'travelling Empiric' and asked to be cured of a bad memory, and a habit of lying. He is cured by the 'gilded pill called - Pillula Memoria - Anti Fibbibus!!' The youth complains that he is poisoned with Asafœtida, the doctor answers that he speaks the truth and will never forget the medicine, so is cured."--British Museum online catalogue

"An untidy shock-headed footman stands letting a tureen slide on to the table so that its contents pour out; in his Ieft hand is a dish containing a leg of mutton, held so that joint and gravy fall to the floor. He stands between a hideous old woman at the head of the table (right) and a comely young one on her right. A fat maidservant follows the footman, holding a dish. Behind the man hangs an elaborately framed bust portrait of a grim-looking man wearing an early eighteenth-century wig. A cockatoo screams from a cage (left). A dog sits behind the old woman's chair, a cat puts its fore-paws on the table to lap the spilt soup. Below the title: 'Take off the largest dishes, and set them on with one hand, to shew the ladies your vigour and strength of back, but always do it between two ladies, that if the dish happens to slip, the soup or sauce may fall on their cloaths, and not daub the floor, by this practice, two of our brethren, my worthy friends, got considerable fortunes. . . . When you carry up a dish of meat, dip your fingers in the sauce, or lick it with your tongue, to try whether it be good, and fit for your masters table - .' From her bed with bed curtains, an ill-looking woman with an imploring look on her face from her bed reaches for her nurse who is asleep in an armchair with her back to her patient and her feet on a cushion. She is very fat and coarse looking as she sits in front of a fire. The candle stick has fallen from the table and lies unobserved smoking on the floor at her feet, the snuffer also on the floor beside a cat who grabs the food from a plate that has also fallen to the floor. The table by the nurse's elbow holds medicine bottles as well as dishware. More medicine bottles are on the mantel and at her feet. A pot warms over the fire

Tom Nero's body is laid out on a round table in a dissecting theatre. In niches on either side are two skeletons labeled "Gentn: Harry" and "Macleane" after two recently hanged criminals. Three doctors work on dissecting Tom's body as a dog feeds on his entrails. The room is filled with doctors reading and discussing, the whole presided over by the chief surgeon in a large chair emblazoned with the arms of the Royal College of Physicians
