Abstract:
Manuscript (holograph?) on parchment of nineteen poems, dedicated to Niccolo Franco, Bishop of Treviso (d. 1499), and other members of the literary circle in Treviso with whom Giovanni Aurelio Augurello (ca. 1440-1524) was actively connected as a famous private teacher and distinguished poet from 1491 until his death. Only the seventeenth poem of MS 22 is directly related to alchemy, but it is above all a literary exercise
Description:
In Latin and Greek., Script: Written by a single scribe in a good humanistic cursive., Large capital letters, mostly plain, at the beginning (written in the left margins) and dedication of each poem in pale red. On f. 1v (blank on the recto) is a drawing in delicate wash of a tree, lower left, against the base of which leans a small book in a red cover; extending upward from the treetop to the sun, at extreme top right, is the inscription in red capitals: "VTCVNQ[VE] TIBI." On f. 2r, opposite the dedicatory drawing just described, there is further decoration in the same delicate wash colors: a leaf in the margin beside the dedication to Niccolo Franco, Bishop of Treviso; light tracery ornament surrounding the capital "F" in the left margin at the beginning of the first poem; and Franco's arms, surmounted by the Bishop's mitre and surrounded by green twigs tied with red ribbons, in the lower margin. At the end of the manuscript, beneath the colophon, there is a further drawing and inscription in green wash, referable to the final poem: a small Roman sarcophagus with a little book in red binding lying atop it, and the inscription "POSTERITATI SACRUM" below., and Binding: Apparently original. Blind-stamped red goatskin (now darkened), repaired, sides paneled with blind fillets, two rows of differing knotwork tools, four clasps and catches now lacking, two asterisk-headed brass nails for each clasp remaining on upper cover, plain edges, modern leather label on backstrip with three faintly raised original bands.

In Latin., Script: Written in humanistic bookhand by a single scribe, above top line., Illuminated initial of poor quality, f. 1r, 7-line, gold (almost completely rubbed), with red penwork filigree and small stylized leaves, with some touches of gold. At the top of the page, beneath rubric, arms of the Rustichelli family (per pale, or, a lion rampant sable; or, 4 bars nebuly sable), surrounded by red penwork. Plain initials in red and blue. Headings in red. Some small initials touched with yellow. Off-set impression of eyeglasses on ff. 33v-34r., and Binding: 19th-20th centuries, Germany (?). Case bound with leaves from a parchment manuscript (Breviary, France, 1250-1300). On the front pastedown: rubrics for the major feasts and their octaves occurring in late June (John the Baptist, 24 June) through mid-August (Assumption, 15 August), and the beginning of the lessons to be read within the octave of the feast of John the Baptist; on the back pastedown: end of the lessons for Hilarianus of Arezzo (7 August) and beginning of the second lesson for Cyriacus, Largus and Smaragdus (8 August).

In Latin., Script: copied by one hand writing a small and rather uneven Humanistica Textualis Libraria, highly abbreviated, especially in the quotations of authorities., Headings in purplish red. Alternately red and blue paragraph marks and 1- and 2-line plain initials with guide letters. Decorated initials: f. 1r (Prologue), 7-line white vinestem initial followed by text line in fancy Capitalis; f. 2r (Part 1), 4-line Humanistic dentelle initial; f. 12r (Part 2), 4-line white vinestem initial; f. 18v (Part 3), 4-line Humanistic dentelle initial; f. 127v (Part 4), idem. Running headlines in Capitalis in purplish red., and Binding: original brown leather over bevelled beech boards, both covers blind-tooled with fillets and small tools in ropework design. Sewn on three split leather thongs. Spine damaged. Remnants of three clasps, one at the top, one at the bottom and one at the side edge of the covers, each attached with three engraved nails to the front cover; quadrangular decorated brass catches on the rear cover, engraved with the initial “S” and each fixed with four nails.

Description:
In Italian., Watermarks: Briquet Arbalete 746., Script: Written in fere-humanistic script by a single scribe, above top line., Fully illuminated title page, f. 6r. Floral border in inner and upper margin, black inkspray with blossoms, green, blue and purple with white highlights and gold balls. Bar border between text columns, gold and red, extends from buds (mauve, green and blue with white highlights) with stylized foliage, purple, blue and green and gold with white highlights; surmounted in upper margin by half-length figure of Virgin with Child. In outer margin, elaborate partial border of stylized foliage and flowers, green, blue and purple with white and yellow highlights and gold balls, framing central wreathed medallion with triton blowing a curved horn, on gold ground with penwork filigree. In center of lower border, arms of the Marcello family of Venice (azure, a bend wavy or) on deep red ground within wreathed medallion, both with yellow highlights. Arms symmetrically flanked by 2 putti plucking fruit from wreathed medallion and holding rods, green, blue, and purple with scrolls bearing the mottoes "sola virtus" and "dulcia poma" in red, and two triton-putti, one playing a flute, the other a stringed musical instrument. One historiated initial, 6-line, of stylized foliage in green, purple, and blue with white filigree on gold ground, with a half-length figure of a crowned and bearded man, perhaps the Emperor Augustus. The design of the upper and inner border and of the historiated initial is conservative in style and close to the work of Leonardo Bellini., and Binding: Fifteenth century, Italy. Parchment stays are adhered inside the quires. Rear pastedown (now lifted): parchment leaf from a lectionary, Italy (North?), 1050-1100; a parchment leaf, perhaps from the same manuscript, is concealed under front paper pastedown. Each leaf, with a stub, is folded around the front and back flyleaves, sewn, and glued down under the pastedowns. Original sewing on five tawed skin, slit straps laid in channels on the outside of beech boards and nailed. Yellow edges. Plain wound, natural color endbands are sewn on leather cores. Covered in brown calf with narrow corner tongues. There is a large, eight-petalled fitting in the central blind-tooled panel and four corner fittings have flower and agnus dei designs on them. The concentric outer frames are filled with rope interlace or small roses. The Marcello arms were stamped on each board on an inlaid leather shield which is wanting on the upper board. Spine: bands outlined with triple fillets, an X of three fillets in the panels. Four fastenings, the catches on the lower board, the upper one cut in for red fabric straps, attached with star-headed nails.

In Latin., Watermarks: similar to Briquet Tour 15909 and Piccard Turm II.617., Script: Written in gothic cursive with humanistic features by a single scribe, above top line., Illuminated initial, f. 1r, 8-line, blue with white highlights and burnished gold on gold ground with stylized foliage in green and dark red with yellow highlights. Terminals ending in foliage serifs, red, green with yellow highlights, and gold balls with hairline extensions. Numerous pen and ink initials, 3-line, alternate red and bright blue with penwork designs of the other color extending along margin., and Binding: Fifteenth century, Italy. Parchment stays are adhered to inner and outer conjugate leaves of quires. Original wound sewing on three tawed skin, slit straps laid in channels on the outside of beech boards. The endbands, which are wanting, were sewn on tawed skin cores laid in grooves and nailed or held in place by the bosses; they were tied down through a tawed skin spine lining. Covered in sheepskin, originally brick red, with the surface now badly rubbed and shedding. Corner tongues. Blind-tooled with an X in concentric frames. Four leaf-shaped catches with three flowers on each on the lower board, one wanting; the upper board cut in for two kermes pink straps attached with star-headed nails. Five flower-shaped bosses on each board and the trace of a chain attachment at the tail of the lower one.

In Latin., Watermarks: unidentified basilisk buried in gutter., Script: Part I (ff. 1-17): Art. 1 written in a humanistic bookhand characterized by tall ascenders, above top line; arts. 2-3 added later in a less expert hand. Part II (ff. 18-25): Written in humanistic cursive script by a single scribe, above top line., Part I: Decoration consists of one illuminated full border, f. 2r, white vine-stem ornament with pale yellow shading on vibrant blue ground, green and deep purplish red and gold ground with white dots on blue, pale yellow dots on green and red. In lower border, medallion, framed by a wreath, with mutilated coat of arms. Illuminated initial, 4-line, gold, framed in pale yellow, on blue, green and red ground with yellow and white filigree, joined to the border. One large illuminated initial, f. 1r, gold on blue, green and red ground with white vine-stem ornament, extending into the upper and inner margin to form partial border. Small initial, 2-line, gold, framed in yellow, on red, blue and green gound with yellow filigree, f. 3r. Headings in red. Spine: four fillets at head and tail and outlining the bands. There are five large, round bosses on each board and two fastenings, the catches on the upper board and the lower one cut in for the straps, one of which is wanting.
