Abstract:
Manuscript, in a single hand, of a collection primarily of arithmetic problems and conversion tables interspersed with a large number of verses, both satirical and sentimental, on such subjects as marriage, the sexes, love, and friendship. The collection includes directions for addition, subtraction, multiplcation, and division; tables of weights and measures; and directions for calculating the number of minutes in years. Many of the poems are occasional, including two addressed to Mrs. Christian Kerr on her birthday and two to Mr Kerr of Chatto on his 71st birthday. The volume also contains several further entries concerning the Kerrs' neighborhood, including a copy of "a circular advertisement for the Douffs in Kelso district, the consecration of the yew at Sunlaws." The collection also contains brief journal entries on significant events, including a murder, a burnt house, and memoranda on wages paid and Dos-a-dos, the volume contains more arithmetic problems; financial accounts; household inventories; lists of books in her possession; and a list of expenses concerning her legal "affair with Hardon beginning 1727."
Description:
Christian Kerr, Lady of Chatto and Sunlaws, was the daughter of William Kerr of Chatto and Sunlaws, and inherited her father's estates in preference to her brother. She married her cousin, Charles Kerr, but left no children. In 1759, she entailed the estates of Chatto and Sunlaws on William Scott of Thirlestain., In English., Laid in: copy of a letter, in the same hand, concerning business and family matters., The manuscript contains several crude drawings, especially of faces., On back flyleaf: "William Kerr," "Mrs. Christian Kerr Her Arithmetick Boock.", Author's name on decorated flyleaf. At his trial before Felix the Roman Governor of Judea, a very short St. Paul stands on a stool so as to be seen. The stool is steadied by a fat angel who is fast asleep and so unaware of the angry looking dog who wears a collar etched with the name 'Felix'. He stands addressing a gallery filled with people in Dutch dress. On the left behind a curtain the orator Tertullus tears up his speech; at his feet a demon pieces the fragments together. On the right Justice is shown as a fat woman who is not blind, one eye is not covered by the blindfold, in her left hand are the scales and in her left a butcher's knife. All the faces are caricatured; many of the audience hold their noses. In the distance can be seen boats on a river and a windmill

47 letters and documents, on paper (one document on parchment) in various cursive scripts, produced in England between 1554 and 1706. Mostly from the Elizabethan and Jacobean periods, they consist of claims for expenses, wages, and other benefits. They include an account of a banquet (15 November 1561), signed by the Marquis of Winchester and Sir Walter Mildmay; a Claim for Allowances (1563) by Sir Thomas Chaloner, Ambassador to Spain; L. S. (1578) by Lord Burgley about money to be sent to Ireland and mentioning Sir Philip Sidney; A. L. S. (1597) by George, Lord Hunsdon; A. K. S. (Chester, 11 Aug. 1601) by the antiquary and mathematician Edward Brerewood to the Privy Council. The documents also include signatures of other government officials and nobles and The documents derive from the papers of Robert Petre, Auditor for the Exchequer, and his colleague Vincent Skinner

Abstract:
A collection of twenty engraved and letterpress British inn bills completed in manuscript in various hands from regions throughout England and Wales, dating between circa 1780 and 1841. Many are printed with menus listing food and drinks as well as services, providing insight into what travellers at the end of the Georgian era were offered in any given region in this period; they are also early examples of the growing tourism trade. Beside tea, coffee, milk, soda water, lemonade, cider (cyder), and a wide range of spirits, other options for speciality drinks include: negus, punch, Geneva, perry, and malt liquors. Many of the various services relate to the care and maintenance of horses and carriages; besides blacksmithing, farrier and saddling services, many of the inns offered hay and corn, rush lights, etc. Also on offer were "servant's eating and ale", beds with extra charges for "fires in a bed chamber", and washing; other services listed included "Chaise hire", servants, providers were sometimes available. Other common services and goods included writing materials, postage, tobacco, and, of course, meals with various foods like fruit listed separately. The printed invoices and menus include some with engraved designs or woodcuts that incorporate a representation of a local attraction or motifs indicative of the trade. Several of the bills also include the imprint of the provincial printer. The majority have manuscript annotations and Two invoices from Welsh business are produced by "Watton, Printer, Shrewsbury Chronicle" for Bedd Gelert Hotel, Carnarvonshire A. Prichard and Harod Arms Hotel, Devil's Bridge, a village and community in Ceredigion, Wales, both of which are illustrated on the fronts and backs, with the same image on the back: The Iron Suspension Bridge, completed and opened on Monday, Januaray 30th, 1826, over the Menai Strait from Carnarvonshire into Anglesey. The fronts include the advertisements for the individual business but also include other natural wonders of the area: Cataracts and Aber Glaslyb Bridge, the Salmon Leap and the Pass in Snowden

A receipt on engraved letterhead with a vignette demonstrating the creation of wallpaper and with the name and address of the merchant (Grant); receipt made out to Mr. Bowen (Bowers?), dated 1 June 1820, and signed by Chs. Grant. Also engraved in vignette is the name of the merchant and a patriotic appeal: "Grant, paper-stainer, near the Old Market, Boston ...
