Autograph manuscript recipe book, in the hands of Elizabeth M. and Harriet Manning, containing over 100 cookery recipes for dishes including puddings, custards, cakes, breads, biscuits, buns, and creams; a few meat and fish dishes including eel soup and beef olives; and curry powder, "Italian cheese," and pickles in West Indian style. There are also a few household recipes for wash balls, furniture oil, ink, and "the Earl of Abingdon's powder."

Abstract:
Manuscript, in multiple hands, of a collection of recipes for preparing cements and dyes, oils, waxes, varnishes, laquers, solders, metals, ivory, stones, glass, tortoise shell, and other materials used to make and repair clocks and watches; also includes instructions on how to make a seal from any impression, formulas for determining the number of teeth on wheels for an 8-day clock; instructions on making "storm glass" or barameter, The manuscript was possibly a manual that passed down within a family of tradesmen. An entry part, possibly the fourth owner, gives a brief summary of his relationship to the Wardle famiy of Framlington, also Northumberland. Laid in are three leaves (now shelved separately), the first dated 3 June 1810 in which the curate Angus Hutton provides an extract from the Register of Baptism for the Chapelry of Framlington recording the 1726 baptism of Ann, daughter of George Wardle; the second, a copy of a 1725 entry in the Parish Regiser of Alnwick signed by the minister John Johnson recording the christening of Anne daughter of John Marshall, Stony Hills; finally a scrap, not contemporary to the rest of the material, recording the baptism on 2 Oct. 1790, Henry son of Henry and Ann Trotter, and Besides recipes related to the watchmaking trade, the notebook includes recipes for dyeing hair and for toothaches; a recipe for making white gunpowder and another for "marking ink"; also a recipe to "brown gun barrels".

Abstract:
Manuscript in at least two hands containing 7 medical charms and 25 medical receipts. There are treatments for worms, sore throats, ague and fever, hornet stings, snake bites, whooping cough, scurvy and rashes, as well as a recipe for opodeldoc. The charms include "a charm for standing of the blood" and "a charm against festering." Accompanied by a modern manuscript transcript and research notes.

A few recipes are attributed to Lady Sophia Egerton and "Mrs. Breton."

Abstract:
Dos-a-dos are several dozen primarily cooking recipes, for such dishes as barley broth, cherry wine, and lemon cream; as well as instructions on fishing. At the beginning of the manuscript are recipes for making ink and treating chilblains. and Manuscript, in a single secretary hand, of a collection of several dozen satirical poems and, dos-a-dos, several dozen household recipes. The poetry is mainly political, anti-Catholic, and academic, and includes works of Henry Denne of Trinity College and Joshua Barnes, as well as such titles as On a papist's ghost; On the queen being with child; The man of honour; England's triumph at sea in Sept. 1691; and The prologue to the music speech spoken in the Theatre July 8, 1693, being the time of the act, by Mr Smith of University College. Other items include an epitaph on Thomas Shadwell and a list of anagrams on the word "Parliament."
