From a quotation from Horace Walpole's letter to 25 March 1761 written from Houghton: A party arrived, just as I did, to see the house, a man and three women in riding-dresses, and they rode post through the apartments. I could not hurry before them fast enough; they were not so long in seeing for the first time, as I could have been in one room, to examine what I knew by heart. "From two huge green bags, pear-shaped and broad-based, emerge respectively the heads of the King and Queen. They stand on the surface of a table forming the base of the design. The King's bag (left) is the larger; with averted head he looks sideways at his wife with an expression of terrified fury. She looks towards him with demure provocation. He wears a crown, she a triple ostrich plume in her hat to show that she is denied her status. Round the vast girth of the King's bag is a buckled garter; round the Queen's a blue (Garter) ribbon (cf. British Museum Satires No. 13802) inscribed '. . . Droit. Honi . Soit. Qui . Mal. y . Pense.' By the former bag is a paper: 'Ordered to lie [scored through] lay on the table'; by the latter: 'Secret Committe [sic]--'."--British Museum online catalogue
