"A phrenologist, De Ville, in his consulting room, feels the forehead of a loutish gaping youth who kneels on a cushion at his feet. Behind the boy stands his stupid-looking mother, grinning with delight at her son. De Ville, who wears plain old-fashioned dress, has a grotesquely shaped skull fringed with scanty hair; his left hand rests on an open book on his table on which is a skull, numbered phrenologically and resting on a paper: Thurtell [murderer] shown to be Craniologically an Excellent Character. Behind him stands an assistant with a porcine profile writing in a note-book: Very large Wit N° 32. A large book-case covers much of the wall (right). "In a plainly furnished room a whole family suffers. An elderly 'cit' and a skinny old woman register acute discomfort. Between their chairs is a round table on which is a dish of cherries and currants. A stout maidservant (left) drinks from a bottle she has taken from a store-cupboard. A little boy, a cat, and a dog are afflicted. A door opens into a bedroom (right) where a little girl relieves herself; another tries to kick her from her seat. On the wall are three shelves of books, among them 'Family Bible' and 'Family Phisician'. A magpie is in a wicker cage."--British Museum online catalogue

"The dentist, short, fat, and bald, stands in back view on a low stool, his knees pressed against the chair, his left arm round the victim's neck; he tugs at an upper tooth. The thin elderly patient raises her left leg in agony, overturning the folding wash-stand on which the dentist's appliances are spread. These include a basin, cup (both spilling their contents), a double set of teeth, a hammer, and a stoppered jar which falls against a large pier-glass, starring it. Both are unaware of the accident, though a little dog barks from under the table. The glass reflects dentist and patient, showing the latter gripping the arm of the chair. There is a window (right), the lower part screened by a slatted green shade. Above this dangle teeth with large blood-stained roots. On a chest of drawers-bookcase are laid out sets of false teeth. The books are Warbler; Winter in London; Lock on the Gums; Miseries of Human Life [Beresford, see See British Museum catalogue No. 10815, &c]; Bible; Tales of the Devil; Tommy Two Shoes; Treatise on Tooth Powder & Brushes; Feast of Wit; Tales of Terror, and two big volumes of Frankensteiv [sic] [Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, published 1818].
