Photograph album created by Sumner Matteson from a selection of his photographs of the Southwest, Montana, and Colorado. The photographs, which are captioned in a typed list that accompanies the album, date from 1899 to 1902, and depict a variety of places and events. The majority of the photographs are of the Hopi Indians, their Snake, Antelope, and Flute ceremonies, kiva interiors, as well as weaving, grinding corn, courting, working in fields, making pottery, and marketing at the Moenkopi, Mishongnovi, Shipolovi and Shongopovi Pueblos. There are also photographs of cliff-dwellings at Mesa Verde and Mancos Canyon, Colorado; Canyon de Chelly, Arizona; Pueblo Indians at Isleta and Acoma, New Mexico; Navajo and Ute Indians in New Mexico and Colorado; Penitentes in Abiquiu, New Mexico; and views of wagon trains, Indian encampments, mines, and sheepherding in Montana
Description:
Sumner Matteson, a bicycle salesman in Denver who became a photographer, traveled around the West between 1899 and 1903, photographing the Mesa Verde and Pueblo Bonito cliff-dwellings, Navajo Indians, Penitentes in New Mexico, Hopi Snake and Flute ceremonies in Arizona, the Pueblo villages of Acoma and Isleta, Montana wagon trains, and cattle and sheep roundups. He sold his own photographs, wrote articles and provided illustrations for popular magazines, and provided photographs for several books on Southwestern Indians written by others., Accompanied by a contemporary typescript containing captions and often explanatory background for almost all of the photographs in the album. Typescript titled "Index to the Frank Klepetko Album. Photos and Data by Sumner W. Matteson" and signed "Sumner W. Matteson, D.A.C. [Denver Athletic Club] Denver, Colo. Two versions of a viewbook distributed by the United States Geological and Geographical Survey of the Territories in 1873 with mounted photographic prints created by William Henry Jackson of camps, geothermal features, and landscape primarily in Yellowstone National Park and Montana, 1872, Images of camps established by members of the United States Geological Survey include sites in the Lower Firehole River Basin of Yellowstone National Park; at the mouth of Teton Canyon, Montana; on the shore of Mystic Lake, Gallatin County, Montana; in the Wasatch Mountains near Ogden, Utah; and at Fort Hall, Idaho, Images of geothermal features in the Upper Geyser Basin of Yellowstone National Park include the crater of Old Faithful, the Grand Geyser in eruption, Castle Geyser, and the crater of Grotto Geyser, Images of geothermal features in the Lower Basin of Yellowstone National Park consist of several views of Mammoth Hot Springs on the Gardner River and a view of the calcium carbonate cone known as Cap of Liberty, An image shows the Architectural Geyser in the Lower Firehole River Basin of Yellowstone National Park, Images of rivers in Yellowstone National Park include views along the Yellowstone River consisting of the Upper Falls, the Lower Falls, and the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone River, as well as a view of Tower Fall, a waterfall on Tower Creek. Scrapbook containing photographs and articles concerning mines owned or operated by James Whitlatch in various regions of Montana and New Mexico. Views include the Whitlatch Union Mine and the Park Gold Mines, worker housing, views of Helena, Montana, scenery in Montana and Utah, and scenes of Salt Lake City. The last several pages of the album are devoted to unidentified cartes-de-visite portraits. The clippings follow the mining career and social activities of James Whitlatch through the 1900s

51 photographs are 25.4 x 19.4 cm. or smaller and 34 cartes-de-visite are 5.6 x 8.6 cm. or smaller. Most of the photographs are accompanied by manuscript or letterpress captions. Included with the photographs are newspaper clippings, magazine articles, trade advertisements, and one drawing of Eugene Whitlatch. A Montana Society of New York program is also included in the scrapbook, in which the name Elijah Woodward is written. and Accompanied by a list of photographs.
