Autograph letter, signed, from Private Timothy Z. Smith to "Sam", likely a friend from Smith's hometown. The letter relays general news of Smith's welfare and thoughts on his life as a soldier since volunteering for service five months earlier. Smith also provides a description of the 31st Regiment's station in New Orleans, and brief assessments of the newly appointed military governor of Louisiana, George F. Shepley, and of commanding general Major General Benjamin Franklin Butler.

Gift of Christa Sammons, 2007., On stationery with engraved letterhead of view of New Orleans., and Timothy Z. Smith, private in Company K, 31st Regiment of Massachusetts Volunteers, Union Army. The 31st Regiment began occupation of New Orleans on May 1, 1862, and was the first Union regiment to enter the city.

Bound photograph album kept by an unidentified amateur photographer depicting a trip made to Texas and California via railroad from January to March 1893. The album opens with views of Washington, D.C., West Virginia, Ohio, Kentucky, and Mississippi and includes 23 photographs of sites in New Orleans. In Texas there are views of a limestone quarry in Kerrville; buildings in San Antonio, including the Alamo; and Missions San José and San Juan. In California there are views of public buildings in Los Angeles and Pasadena; Missions San Gabriel, San Fernando and Santa Barbara; agriculture in Covina and Riverside; and wharves at Redondo and San Pedro.
