He looks at her adoringly and says, "Now what care I for Mom and Dad, let 'em scold and bellow." His left hand rests on books piled up on the table (the titles of which are also listed in the publisher's advertisement). Another lady on his left looking at him may be Elizabeth Armitstead (later Mrs. Fox) who succeeded Mrs. Robinson as his mistress. Other members of this group include Lord Derby and his actress wife, Elizabeth Farren, and Charles James Fox. The location appears to be the Schomberg House where James Graham established his 'Temple of Health and Hymen' famous for its 'Celestial Bed' (cf. British Museum catalogue no. 6325). Within the building is a large wheel turned by a horse and giving motion to a considerable number of spindles, to which are attached disks; on each of the disks are several razors, which are thus set in action on the faces of the men who apply their cheeks to openings in the inner wall of the building. A celebration in a sporting club. In the center of the room before a large table, a man in a hat (with a black eye?) raises a gavel in an attempt to bring order as two members begin a fist-fight and others converse and laugh. One member restrains a woman as she attempts to hit a man on the head with a tankard; the man appears already unconscious and injured. Boxing gloves, tankards and glasses, hats, and a stick are scattered on the floor in the foreground. The room is lighted by the candles in a candelier. On the walls are a clock, two pictures of fighers -- one of Humphrys and the other of Mendoza; a broadside "Rules" (damaged); a broadside entitled "Last dying speech & confession of W[...]st the Boxer" with a picture of a gallows at the head; and, a picture of two men boxing (the pictures amplifying the subject). "Fox and Sheridan (left) sit together at the head of a rectangular table on which is a punch-bowl, &c, looking with dismay at whigs (right), who advance to hurl their wigs at a large pile of wigs on the left (inscribed 'The Heads having Scratched out of the Club'), or retire, having already done so. Fox and Sheridan wear enormous wigs, the former says, "Brother: Brother: we are all in the wrong" ... Before Fox is a list with names scored through. Sheridan grasps a bottle of 'Sherry'. A couple advance together, in the act of hurling their large wigs at the pile; one says, "I will Scratch out my Name in hopes of getting in for the City" (probably Nathaniel Newnham, returned for the City 1784, but defeated in 1790, cf. British Museum satires no. 7162). The other is perhaps Windham. The only one of the retiring wigless Whigs who is characterized is Burke. All say: "We have erased our Names for ever from the Club, when the Artful & Ambitious designs of a Faction are carried on under a Mask of Prudential Reform & when the leading Members are Notoriously known to Carry on a secret Correspondence with the Avowed Enemies of the Constitution they Affect to Support & Defend it is high time for all prudent & real friends to that Constitution to leave them to their Just Punishment, the Contemp of all true Friends to their King and Constitution."--British Museum online catalogue

An amulet on long scroll of vellum or snake skin, rolled around a central axis into a silver hexagonal tube with a cap; niello etched in an arabesque pattern in gold, with three loops where a chain can go through, so that it can be worn as a necklace. The scroll is written in a long central column surrounded by eight different rectangular compartments in different colors. The central column contains Surat al-Qadr (Qurʼan: Chapter 97), followed by Surāt al-Fātiḥat (Qurʼan: Chapter 1), followed by the Creator's verse of Sūrat al-Ḥajj (Qurʼan: Chapter 22:65), followed by a long invocation asking God for help and guidance, followed by a Shiʻī invocation asking for the intecession of Imām ʻAlī, followed by a magic square.
