Description:
Script: Copied by two hands, both writing Gothica Cursiva Currens: A) copied ff. 2r-16v21 and ff. 97r-112r; and B) copied ff. 16v21-90v., Decoration: Art. 1 has red paragraph marks, underlining and stroking of majuscules; this decoration is missing ff. 35v-90v. On f. 1r the 3-line opening initial is clumsily executed in black ink. In art. 2 red paragraph marks, underlining and stroking of majuscules, but also red headings and plain 3-line initials in the same colour, often of fancy execution; art. 3 has the same lower decoration, but neither headings nor 3-lin initials. Artt. 2 and 3 open with complicated large red initials in a style recalling cadels but essentially fanciful., Binding: Original pigskin over bevelled wooden boards, sewn on three cords. Both covers blind-tooled with fillets, a frame, and vertical rows of stamps: a fleur-de-lys in a diamond, a rosette, an f-shaped twig with two leaves, and a floweret. Remnants of one brass clasp, attached to the rear cover, clutching a brass catch on the front cover. Both metal pieces are engraved., and In Latin.

Description:
In Latin., Script: copied by one hand in large but somewhat uneven Southern Gothica Textualis Formata (Rotunda) under Humanistic influence (uncial and half-uncial d). The orthography is very defective., Headings in red; alternately red and blue versals in the text; 2-line plain initials alternately red and blue; 2-line flourished initials in liquid gold with red penwork on ff. 2r, 16v and 19r. A 7-line initial of the same type and in the same colours at the beginning of the text., and Binding: 17th century (?), Italian. The quires are sewn without cords directly into the pasteboard cover, which itself is covered with blind-tooled goatskin. Marks of two pairs of ties.

In Latin., Watermark: Ox head with eight-petalled flower on a rod and a cross below the mouth (Piccard, Ochsenkopfwasserzeichen, XIII.723 (1471-1474)., Script: copied by two hands writing Gothica Semihybrida Libraria; A copied ff. 1r-15v; B, writing a wider, more sloping and more rapid script, copied ff. 16r-20v. Both hands spell the diphthongs ae and oe in the classical manner., Headings, underlining and stroking of the majuscules in red. Red plain initials in artt. 1-5, normally 4 lines. In Latin., Script: copied by one hand in Gothica Hybrida Formata., Decoration: Stroking of majuscules, paragraph marks, underlinings and headings all in red. 3-line plain initials alternately in red and blue at the opening of the chapters, sometimes with white decoration. Generally undecorated after f. 36., and Binding: original, brown leather over wooden boards. Spine has four raised bands. The covers are blind-tooled with frames and lozenges traced in triple fillets and floral designs. Red leather tabs at the beginning of each book of the art. 2 and at the beginning of art. 3.

Folios 151r-220r (art. 8) contain red numbering. Folio 1r contains red or blue 3- or 4-line flourished initials with interior reserved shapes and developed penwork in the contrasting colour, extending into the margin., and Binding: Original brown calfskin over bevelled oak boards, damaged, sewn on four leather thongs. Both covers are blind-tooled with frame, lozenge and triangle patterns; stamped with rosette, fleur-de-lys, star, "ihs", and dragon patterns. The remains of two leather straps are attached to the rear board, associated with pins (lost) on the front board. The endleaves are fragments of bifolia from a 14th cent. parchment liturgical manuscript.

In Latin., Script: Written in various styles of Anglicana, with some portions in gothic bookhand, by four scribes. Scribe 1) ff. 1r-10r; Scribe 2) ff. 10v-30r; Scribe 3) ff. 31r-107v; Scribe 4) f. 75r to the top of 76r (perhaps to supply text missing from the exemplar)., Blue initials with elaborate red, blue, and black penwork borders that almost totally encompass the written space on ff. 1r and 31r (trimmed along upper and outer edges); similar initials in blue with red penwork designs extending entire length of folio introduce each new section of text., and Binding: Nineteenth century. Brown sheepskin, blind- and gold-tooled. Rebacked.

Description:
In French., Script: Written in an informal batarde by one scribe who also added proper names in the margins., The miniatures are dry and unoriginal copies of rather average quality. One large 2-column miniature of the Two Cities at the beginning of Bk. 1 (f. 5r) in a thin gold frame; on 3 sides a bar-border with pink, orange, and blue plant scrolls on a gold ground, surrounded by a full border of dense ivy in pink, red, orange, blue, and gold, with white highlights; interspersed with gold balls with hairsprays. Before the Prologue and all the remaining books, miniatures, 19- to 18-line (vols. 1-2) or 16- to 15-line (vols. 3-4), in thin frames, pink and blue, with white highlights, set within a gold band, with 3/4 bar borders in red, blue, and gold, highlighted in white, and a full ivy border, as described above (no orange)., Beneath each miniature there is a large initial, 7- to 5-line, blue or pink with scrolls and geometric forms in white highlighting, on blue or pink grounds respectively, set within thin gold frames, or blue and/or pink on a gold ground; both types filled with red and/or blue ivy scrolls with white highlights (in one case, v. 4, f. 74r, there is also a dragon terminal). Initials, 3- to 2-line, at the head of each chapter, gold edged in black, on pink and blue grounds with white highlights.
