Abstract:: "The Duke (left) and Duchess of St. Albans stand facing each other; the little Duke staggering under an ornamental basket which supports a side of bacon, inscribed Best Wiltshire. The Duchess holds on her shoulder a cutter in which are seated six oarsmen with oars held erect, and a helmsman. The Duke is dressed as Grand Falconer (see British Museum Satires No. 15596) and wears a hood with bells indicating both a fool's cap and the hood and bells of falconry. Two speeches float from his head: [1] "In love connubial, formed to live and last, This gift records a blissful twelvemonth past We claim, then boldly claim the flitch Dunmow First of the blest, who keep the marriag Vow". [2] I thought the flitch to small a present on this auspicious day so I have brought the Gammon with it Love. The Duchess answers: Thanks for your Bacon Duke well have you Saved it - and in return accept of this small Testimony of my affection. She wears Court dress, coronet, and feathers. The boatmen wear yellow and green liveries, and on the prow is a falcon's head; the back of the seat in the stern is decorated with a falcon perched on a melon resting on a heap of sovereigns. In the foreground are spectators: on the left the Dukes of Cumberland (wearing his hat) and Sussex stand together with Prince Leopold behind them; on the right is Sir Francis Burdett (son-in-law of Coutts), very thin, surprised, and displeased. In the background are other spectators, their heads concealed by the boat, and on the right a group of singers, some in Tyrolean costume, with (?) Abstract:: King George IV and entourage laden with provisions, about to embark from Brighton in the Royal Yacht; representing the extravagant monarch's distressed retreat from England at the time of the Queen's trial and "George IV leads a procession to the waterside to embark in the royal yacht, preceded by the Attorney-General with a 'Green Bag' [see No. 13735] under each arm, and a bottle of 'Milan Brandy' [see British Museum Satires No. 13755, &c.] in each hand. The latter, much caricatured and with a malevolent countenance, says: "The Tide is against His Ma--je--ty but should He be able to clear Cuckolds Point [cf. British Museum Satires No. 13769] no doubt he will easily weather Cape Horn." The King, wearing sailor's trousers, rollicks along between Lady Hertford and Lady Conyngham (see British Museum Satires No. 13847), arm-in-arm with both and looking towards the latter. He holds in one hand a purse inscribed '2/6', in the other a bottle: 'Decoction of Bergamy', and wears a long watch-ribbon inscribed 'Non mi ricordo' [see British Museum Satires No. 13827]. Both ladies carry reticules inscribed '2/6' [half a crown, cf. British Museum Satires No. 13826]. Lady Hertford: "I hope your Ma--je--ty will not forget your promise (when in Hertford) to take a peep in Y--amouth [sic] Roads--as the Sea breezes might be beneficial." Lady Conyngham: "Don't doubt us your Ma--je--ty we shall never be wanting to lend a Hand to raise the Royal G . . . e." Behind walk Sidmouth and Castlereagh, the latter wearing a triangular hat, holding a scourge and fetters and with a package inscribed 'Irish Wiskey Triangular Proceedings' [see British Museum Satires No. 14135] under his arm. Sidmouth carries a 'Royal Medecine Chest' under his arm, with a clyster-pipe (cf. British Museum Satires No. 9849) inscribed 'Portable Soup'; on his head is a commode-pan inscribed 'Stink Pot for the Radicals'. He says: "Take care of the Green Bags, Stow 'em safe-- for should the Sea Water touch them they'll rot sooner than is expected--and his Ma--je--ty would run the chance of loosing half a Crown" [see British Museum Satires No. 13826]. They are followed by Liverpool and Canning, both wearing, like the King, top-hats ornamented with crowns, to show they are the King's servants. Liverpool has a pen behind his ear and carries two bags, one inscribed 'Pursers Profits', the other 'Nip Cheese 75 Per Cent'. He says "one and one makes two. Canning carries a weathercock (cf. British Museum Satires No. 13737) and says: "A fine Breeze and we shall soon be out of the scent of Cotton Yard [see British Museum Satires No. 13824] theres a kind of Vapour gathering in that Quarter that's likely to be very offensive, unless the rubbish is shortly removed!!" In the foreground on the extreme left walks Sir William Curtis, in the sailor's dress of the Walcheren Expedition, see British Museum Satires No. 11353, &c. He has a vast paunch inscribed 'The Orphans Fund' [see British Museum Satires No. 13706] and 'Blubber', and carries a large turtle, a knife, and a long spoon. He says: "Who so blythe so blythe as we to take a voyage a voyage to Sea Along with his great Ma--j--ty." Behind is a man carrying on his head a basket of kitchen 'Stores': gridiron, kettle, &c. Abstract:: "The King and Queen (left), seated under a canopy decorated with a crown and the royal arms, listen enraptured to a concert; the performers are arranged in a pyramid on the right. Numbers on the figures refer to notes engraved beneath the design. George III leans back, his hands clasped, eyes turned ecstatically upwards; he wears a laurel wreath and his head is surrounded by a star-shaped halo. The Queen sits upright with an eager expression, beating time; her hair and scraggy neck are covered with jewels (cf. BMSat 6978, &c). On the extreme left, and on the King's right, stands Pitt, very erect, a rattle in his right hand, blowing a whistle attached to a child's coral and bells. Behind the Queen are two ladies: '4', lean and ugly, holds an ear-trumpet to her ear; ['5'], who is stout, holds a parakeet on her finger. This group is: '1 Mr P------t'. '2 K------'. '3 Q------'. '4 Mad. Schw---gh--n' [Schwellenberg]. '5 Miss Jeff-----s' [Elizabeth Jefferyes or Jeffries, a Maid of Honour]. The royal party are on a circular carpet. On the roof of the canopy sits a demon holding up a purse in each hand, emblem of the supposed avarice of the King and Queen, a favourite subject with Gillray, cf. BMSat 7166, and see BMSat 7836, &c. Three demon hounds, inscribed 'G. R. Windsor', chase a realistically drawn fox (Fox), to whose tail is tied (by a ribbon inscribed 'Coalition') a pot with the features of North. The performers are arranged behind a low semicircular barrier. A stout man with a goat's head is asleep on the left, his hands clasped on his breast; from his pocket protrudes a paper inscribed 'Road to Wynnstay' (cf. BMSat 7068, &c). He is '6 Sr W. W. W-----ne' [Williams-Wynn], one of the founders of 'The Concert of Antient Music'. A demon child and an infant with butterfly-wings sit together on the barrier, singing from one book. A braying ass holding a book is '7 Mr Assb-----ge' (Ashbridge, a celebrated kettle-drummer). A bird of prey (? an owl) wearing a large cap stands on the barrier, a piece of music under its claws inscribed 'Anointed Solomon, King over all, E------'. She is '8 Mad. Mara.' Next '7' is seated a large ox supporting a music-book on his hoofs. He is 'J------h B--tes' (Joah Bates, originator (1776) and conductor of 'The Concert of Antient Music'). In the second row of performers (right to left) is a group (behind '7' and '8') of three fishwives: '10, D------ R------d'. the Duke of Richmond, with a basket of fish on his head, arms akimbo, is scolding '11, M-----s La--sd--e' (Marquis Lansdowne), while '12, Col. B--r-' (Barré), his eyes closed, joins in the dispute. An allusion to the altercation in the House of Lords over Richmond's proposed fortifications (see BMSat 7149 etc.). Next, realistically drawn, is '13 Sir J. M--why' (Mawbey), holding under his arm a squeaking pig whose tail he is twisting as if it were a musical instrument. Mawbey, as a distiller, was famous for keeping large quantities of hogs, see BMSats 5746, 7506, &c. Two lawyers sing from the same music; they are '14 Atty Genl' (Arden) and '15 Sollr Genl' (Macdonald). Behind their heads, and towards the apex of the pyramid, stand two judges facing each other, each holding a chimney-sweep's shovel and brush which they strike together in the manner of chimney-sweeps on May Day. They are '16. D--n--as' (Dundas) and '17. Ld L--ghb--gh' (Loughborough). The former's shovel is decorated with a thistle, the latter's with a man hanging from a gibbet, with the date '1745' and 'Kenn Com' in allusion to the Jacobites executed on Kennington Common, one of whom was Sir John Wedderburn. The apex of the pyramid is '18. Ch--n--ll--r', Thurlow, standing with a fierce expression; he holds up a pair of birch-rods above the bare posteriors of two terrified boys who serve as kettle-drums. Two squalling and fighting cats hang from the ceiling by ribbons attached to their tails. Beneath the design is engraved: '------Monarchs, who with Rapture wild, Hear their own Praise with Mouths of gaping Wonder, And control each Crotchet of the Birth-day Thunder. Peter Pindar.' The satire illustrates this and other passages from 'Ode upon Ode', which attack Pitt for obsequiousness to the King, and the King and Queen for their parsimony in attending the Concerts of Antient Music as subscribers instead of having concerts at their palace: '- Monarchs, who with oeconomic Fury Force all the tuneful World to Tot'n'am Lane.' Mawbey is mentioned: 'Strains! that Sir Joseph Mawbey deem'd divine, Sweet as the Quavers of his fattest Swine.' Wynn also: 'The sleek Welsh Deity who Music knows- The Alexander of the Tot'n'am Troops.' Richmond is mentioned: 'Mad as his Military Grace For fortifying ev'ry Place . . .' Abstract:: A line of seven figures all caricatured with animalistic features, marching right to left, shown full-length. The first character blows a horn, carries a violin and bow in his hands and on a string around his waist another horn with smoke coming out hangs over his behind; he is wearing spectacles and a scarf aroung his head as well as a Roman-style pink dress; he has wings and appears to have a breast. In the text above his head: En avant la renommeé? Sur l'air: j'ai du bon tabac, dans Misantropie et repentir. The second figure is wearing Roman armour and carries a long-handled pan; he has claws for hands, a bird's face and tail feathers. On top of his helmet sits a rat. The text above his head reads: Tais toi! Geulard, vilain menteur de Constitutionel; j' t'ai dis que l'premier qui tomeroit sous ma griffe, il aura beau crier ... la mort ... aura.." The third figure with a large belly has a highly caricatured face with large, exaggerated features and fangs; he wears a bonnet. He is armed with a knife hanging in his belt as well as a long sword on a chain. Above his head are the words: Mais, mon Capitaine t'as dis qu't' allois les prendre en flanc j' l'aime bien, moi, l'flanc, tu m'en donneras? .. ain!" The fourth and fifth figures both have wolf-like faces. The one also has a tail and carries a hoe and a basket with a second wicker basket on his back. The writing above his head, " Qu' est-ce qu' en veut? Des lettres de falaise, en voulez vous d' la Chicorée?" The other's clothes are tattered and short, with a sash around his waist; he wears a straw hat and smokes a pipe. Above his head is written, "J' vons avertir not' Capitaine, qu' j'ons vu' à la Rapée des Goujons ... ultras. The final two, both with large snouts and fangs, surround a cannon, the one is pulling it and the other standing crossed-armed looking angrily at his companion in conversation with the figure ahead of him. Above their heads, first, "On dit qu' i' z'ont l'vent su' nous mais c'est qu' j' disque p'tite pluis abat grand vents" and last "On! si j' pouvois attraper l'beau local (l' bocal) aux Conichons ... Oh! c'est sure."
