Description:

Description:
Iohannes Baers (Baersius), born in Ghent 1580, d. 1653, studied theology in Leiden, was minister in various places in the Northern Netherlands, was 1629 in Pernambuco (Brasil) and in 1632 back in the Netherlands minister in Soest. He is the author of two books in Dutch, published in 1648 and 1653 respectively, but his poetic paraphrase of Lamentations seems to be unrecorded. Whether this work was finished in 1601 or 1605 is not clear. This Carmelite monk in Ghent, named Paschasius Baers, became after his conversion minister in Zele (East Flanders) and from 1580 onwards in various places in the Netherlands; from 1590 to 1603 he was active in Leeuwarden., In Latin., Script: Written by a single scribe in careful Humanistica Cursiva. Titles and running titles are in a larger size of the same script., and Binding: Original limp vellum, both covers decorated with a simple blind-tooled frame and four small gilt fleurons in the corners. Remains of two green silk ties. Gold-tooled inscriptions in capitals, on front cover: ".SERO.SED.SERIO."; on rear cover "ANNO.1601." Inscription in ink on the spine: "Lamentationes ***********". Edges gilt.

In Latin., Script: The handwriting, by various scribes sometimes difficult to discern, is generally very uneven. Scripts include Hybrida Formata, Semihybrida Currens, Hybrida Libraria, and Cursiva Libraria. Part I (ff. 1-84): Copied by four Gothic hands. Part II (ff. 85-215) Copied by several hands. Part III (ff. 216-273): Copied by three hands. Part IV (ff. 274-343): Copied by one hand. Part V (ff. 344-388): Copied by three hands., Headings in red. Part I: The majuscules are stroked in red. Plain initials of various sizes in red, generally with the simplest form of penwork; they are all executed by the same hand. Part II: Plain initials in red of various styles and sizes, often with some flourishing; they are missing on ff. 206r-207v. Part III: The majuscules are stroked in red. 2-3 line plain initials in red. Part IV: Red stroking of majuscules and red paragraph-marks. Plain initials in red of mediocre execution; on ff. 279r-284r cadels with fancy forms; a face in the initial on f. 312r; some initials (ff. 324r-341v) apparently by the same hand as those in Part I. Part V: Stroking of initials in red. 2-3-line plain initials in red at the opening of the chapters. A human face in the initials on ff. 351r, 352r, 375v. The names of the authorities quoted are in red., The paper at places damaged by the acidity of the ink., Binding: Original blind-tooled brown leather over unbevelled oak boards, bound on four double cords. The two covers are decorated by means of triple fillets with different patterns: on the front cover a double rectangular frame divided into small lozenges decorated with lozenge-shaped hand-tools: griffon, unicorn (?), undetermined, ad two small flowerets; on the rear cover a double rectangular frame divided into six triangles decorated with only a few lozzenge-shaped hand-tools. Both covers protected by four engraved brass corner-pieces (three lost). Remnants of two clasps attached to the rear cover. Spine reinforcement consisting of four fragments from a missal (see below). Spine (damaged) with four raised bands and plaited headbands. Brown leather spine label with gold-tooled title and shelf-mark: "VEN. BEDAE / SCINTILLA ETC. / I. XXII. B. V." (now detached). Five red leather tabs or traces of tabs, one at the beginning of each part. Front paste-down of blank parchment., and Consecutive rear fly-leaf and paste-down cut from the same missal as the binding reinforcements, Germany, 14th century. Final part of the Ordinary of the Mass, containing corrections and changes. The Pater noster has neumatic notation on 4-line staves in black, red and yellow. Parchment. Copied by one hand in Gothica Textualis Formata, the corrections in smaller Textualis Libraria (ca. 1400). Red stroking of majuscules, red rubrics and plain initials.

In Latin., Script: Written by a single scribe in liturgical gothic script., Carefully executed initials, 3-line, on blue or pink rectangles outlined in black, mark the beginning of each psalm; partial cusped borders, also in blue and pink, attached to each. Initials infilled with intertwining vines, often on gold ground, sometimes with small animals; modest use of gold dots inside rectangular grounds and borders. 1-line initials of blue with red penwork with blue dots and of gold with blue penwork and red dots. Line-fillers in combinations of red, blue and gold (various linear and flower designs)., and Binding: Nineteenth century. Bound in a piece of blind-tooled brown calf, once part of a 17th-18th century binding. Front pastedown and flyleaf from a Bible concordance, version 3 (France, ca. 1300). Back pastedown from 15th-century antiphonal, with musical notation, containing a portion of the office for Nicolas (6 Dec.).

Missing the beginning of Numbers (v. 1, one folio following f. 115), the beginning of 3 Kings (v. 1, one folio following f. 236), and part of Luke (v. 2, one folio following f. 260).

In French., Script: Written in a formal batarde with some loops by one scribe. Marginal glosses in a similar but smaller script by the same hand. Corrections by a later hand (15th century) in brown ink., One large, 2-column miniature, 18-lines, f. 3r, of three scribes, set in a wide (25 mm.) frame, brown, decorated with a continuous garland of flowers in gold, green and white, outlined on both inner and outer edges with bands of pink, gold and blue, highlighted in white. Text surrounded by a 3/4 band of pink and gold with white highlights, edged in black. Full border: curling sprouts of blue, gold and some red and light blue acanthus on green stems, largely confined to the corners and centers of the border, with blossoms containing animals, devils, knights; the intervening spaces filled with trailing vines of green and gold leaves with varied flowers in red, blue, light blue, strawberries, grapes and beans as well as denser vines in black ink with leaves in gold and green, with flowers, as above; the entire border densely filled with pen flecks, black, with gold dots., Historiated initials (one column, 8-line), for the Seven Days of Creation (ff. 4v, 5r, 5v, 6v, 7v, 8v and 10r), roundels, with circular frames, brown with garlands as above, in some cases with the top and bottom of the roundel lopped off, set against a field of acanthus and/or flowers, as above, and set between two thin gold bands, edged in black. Short, thin borders of acanthus, vines, and flowers as above, divided from text by gold and pink bands, edged in black. Each miniature with a 5-, 4- or 3-line initial, blue with white highlights, filled with strapwork and blue and pink ivy with white highlights, on irregular gold ground. 2-line initials throughout, gold filled with red set against a blue ground or vice versa, trailing black hairspray with gold, red and blue dots. Initials cruder in v. 2. Line-fillers in both text and glosses in similar fashion. Running headings (in v. 1 only), and keys for glosses in red throughout. Traces of tabs in outer margins., and Binding: 1981. Bound in a brown, linen buckram case in the Yale Library Conservation Studio to replace an 18th century brown calf binding. One board of this binding retained in box.

Manuscript on parchment of Cyril of Alexandria's Glaphyra in Genesim, Books I-IV (first part of Glaphyra in Pentateuchum).
Description:
In Latin., Script: copied by one hand writing Humanistica Textualis. Pale red headings, mostly not executed. Space for initials is provided, with guide letters, but initials are mostly not executed. On f. 1r a 6-line white vinestem initial with extensions in the upper and left margins; white vinestem decoration in the lower margin around a wreath, containing now a blank escutcheon. On ff. 37v (4 lines), 42r (6 lines) and 60r (4 lines) white vinestem initials of lower quality and in a different style., Cyril of Alexandria's Glaphyra in Genesim, Books I-IV (first part of Glaphyra in Pentateuchum). Latin translation ascribed to Iosephus. Due to the loss of two leaves a part of the text preceding the final sentences is missing. A few 17th century annotations., and Binding: 19th or 20th century: brown morocco, both covers gold-tooled with a floral stamp, four times crosswise applied in the center. Spine with three raised bands, to which the gold-tooled leather of the 17th century binding has been pasted, with the inscription: "CIRILI / ALEXAND / OPUS / MS". Marbled paper pastedowns.
