Abstract:
"Sheridan, in Harlequin dress (cf. British Museum Satires No. 9916), rows an open boat, over which large waves are breaking, towards a rock on the horizon inscribed 'Cape Clear', The others in the boat are (left to right) Moira, in the bows, Yarmouth pumping hard, the Regent, McMahon, and Lady Hertford who steers with an oar. Her identity is made unmistakable by a scarf streaming from her décolletée dress, inscribed 'Manchester Stuff [cf. British Museum Satires No. 11878]. She says: Pull away Sherry--Til steer you--into--Blanket Bay'. Next her sits the Prince, vomiting, his head held by McMahon, who says, "This is Sorry--Work indeed." His hat, trimmed with his feathers and motto, 'Ich Dien', flies from his head, puffed by blasts from three winged (portrait) heads, two perhaps intended for Burdett and Whitbread. Sheridan says to Yarmouth: "Pump a way My Noble dont Flinch." Moira bestrides the bows of the boat clasping the flag-staff from which flies a Union Jack; he says: "I'll keep a good look-out a head for My Honours sake." Three other winds (unrecognizable), inscribed 'Mother Careys Chickens', blow against him (cf. British Museum Satires No. 11050). "A mail-coach inscribed 'Sovereig, Windsor and London', with high-stepping horses, is driven, left to right, by Wellington, who wears fashionable coaching dress with multiple-caped coat and broad-brimmed hat. He has just passed a rival coach, 'the Humbug & Co London Windsor', which has overturned, after colliding with a roadside post inscribed 'Emancipation'. An alarmed face looks out of the window; the traces have broken, the front wheels are off; the driver, Eldon, has fallen on his back on to the prostrate wheelers. The Duke of Cumberland falls head first from the frail dickey; another man (? Winchilsea) falls from the roof, which is stacked high with bulky petitions, one inscribed 'Old Womans Petition']; a paper also falls to the ground inscribed 'Bigotry, Ignorance, Intolerance, Loaves, Fishes, Pensions, Places'. Behind Wellington, on "The Sovereign", sit four men: Brougham, in barrister's wig and holding a brief-bag, a bishop, Burdett, a judge (probably Lyndhurst). The guard is Peel, who stands up, horn in hand, to say to the Duke: 'I say governor we've done em up at last, they will never recover themselves any more.' Wellington, looking over his shoulder, answers: 'No No, they are quite done up that post has smash'd them.' The inside passengers are George IV and Lady Conyngham; he leans out to watch the catastrophe, saying with a smile, 'Floored by George.' She says: 'Aye Aye George we've gotten a Coachman now vot is up to a thing or two, and knows vot is vot.' Brougham: 'Why the concern has been in a bad way some time they say that it is so rotten that all the Rats abandoned it.' The bishop: 'Its lucky they had few passengers.' Burdett: 'No wonder they upset they had too much rubbish on the roof'. The coach flies a flag inscribed 'True Patriotism Honor Truth Liberality'; it is decorated with the Royal Arms: shamrock and roses. The base of the design is formed by the heads and raised arms of the mob below. Hood and Sheridan, with their supporters, are on the left of the post, Paull and his supporters on the r. The supporters wear favours (buff and blue on the left) with the names of their candidates. On the extreme left. is a stout man holding a whip. Next, Hood in uniform, with his empty r. sleeve, turns in profile to the left., away from Sheridan, putting his hand to his mouth to cover a smile. Sheridan stares in bewildered an speechless anguish, horrified at the shouts of the mob and at Paull's words Whitbread, standing behind, puts his left hand reassuringly on his shoulder and offers him a foaming tankard inscribed 'Whitbread new Loyal Porter'. "Pitt stands in the House of Commons, facing the Opposition benches; he causes a tremendous explosion by uncorking a bottle containing the bloated and scowling face of Sheridan, whose hair swirls up into the neck of the bottle. He stands like a waiter with a napkin, marked with a crown and 'GR', under his left. arm; the bottle is between his bent knees, and in his right. hand is a corkscrew, held directly over the bottle. Similar bottles, corked and labelled, stand on the Opposition benches. In the foreground, facing Pitt, are bottles containing the heads of (l. to r.) Tierney, labelled 'a Glass of All-Sorts', Fox, labelled 'True French Wine' [see BMSat 9735, &c], Windham, labelled 'Brandy and Water', and in profile to the left., Grey, labelled 'Goosberry Wine'. All look up at Pitt with anxious melancholy. Rows of bottles recede in perspective on the back benches; only three contain heads: a melancholy profile (see BMSat 10372) of Burdett, labelled 'Brentford Ale' [the polling place for Middlesex], Erskine, labelled 'Spruce Beer' [frothy explosive stuff], and behind these two a partly concealed profile labelled 'Elder Wine'. Next Burdett is a bottle of 'Whitbreads Small-Beer'. Another bottle is labelled 'Mum'. On the ground behind Pitt lies an open bottle of 'Medicinal Wine' spilling its contents, and containing the head of Sidmouth (Addington, see BMSat 9849), with closed eyes suggesting death rather than sleep. Behind, on the extreme left., is part of the Speaker's chair, only a portion of wig being visible. The violent explosion spreads across the upper part of the design; it contains the words 'Bouncings', 'Growlings', 'Fibs! Fibs! Fibs', 'Abuse', 'Abuse', 'Damn'd Fibs', 'Invectives', 'Old Puns', 'Groans of Disappointment', 'Stolen Jests', 'Invectives', 'lame Puns', 'Invectives', 'Loyal Boastings', 'Dramatic Ravings', 'Low Scurrilities', 'Stale Jokes', 'Fibs, Fibs, Fibs! "Sir Francis Burdett declaims, holding up a bonnet rouge shaped like a fool's cap; he addresses those who are making a bonfire of statutes, &c., on the cobbles of Palace Yard (left). His raised left arm is flung back, pointing towards Westminster Hall, which is being stoned and demolished by a mob. He says: "It is only in the House of Commons / "that the People of England are spoken of / "with Contempt, & calumniated!!!-- / "--can things be remedied by Bills? No!-- / "it must be by an Honest House of "Commons!--what is the use of Magna-Charta, Habeas-Corpus, / "or the Bill of Rights?-- / See, my own Speech at Westminster--Vide, "Cobbett's Patriotic Register. He tramples on a sceptre beside which lies a crown, reversed and covered by a long scroll: Resolution[s] of the Whig-Club; Resolved--That it is the decided Opinion of this Club that no Substantial & permament [sic] Good can be derived by the Country, from any change of Ministry, unless accompanied by an entire change of Systemn--accomplish'd by an entire Reform of the Parliament. A great pile of documents with a Holy Bible in the centre, is ready for the flames; Horne Tooke, in bonnet rouge, dressing-gown, and slippers, kneels at Burdett's feet, holding a dark lantern (as in No. 10738), and applying a flaming brand, inscribed Sedition, to the pile. Three simian and negroid creatures holding papers like sub-human newsboys, as in Gillray's New Morality [No. 9240], apply torches to the pile. One, with a tartan cloth round its waist, holds the Edinburgh Review, another the Morning Chronicle; the third wears a wig inscribed Independ[ent] Wig. Under Tooke's firebrand are the Rights of the House of Brunswick to the Throne Brunswick Succession; Magna Charta; Bill of Rights; Habeas Corpus. "The procession trudges through the muddy channel (kennel) between cobblestones from 'Hudsons Hotel', whose pillared porch, with a placard, 'Paul & Indep[endence]', is partly visible on the extreme right., to the hustings, part of which is in the background (l.). The central figure is Paull, seated with crossed ankles on a big 'India Cabbage' on the back of a goose with the head of Sir Francis Burdett, the goose's beak projecting in front of Burdett's profile as in BMSat 10708, &c. Paull is an out-at-elbows tailor, in slovenly dress. In his right. hand he holds a huge pair of shears, between the blades of which is a vast 'True Perth Cucumber'. In his left hand is a yard-stick over his shoulders is a tape-measure; on the back of his goose are a roll of patterns of 'Superfine Cloth' inscribed 'Patterns for the New Parliament Dress', and a smoothing-iron inscribed 'Goose upon Goose'. Horne Tooke, full face and walking sideways, leads the goose by a noose of rope round its neck; he says: "Come along Goosee! come along! Paulee says he will go with you if its to the Scaffold! Goosee!!" Under his arm is a pamphlet: 'Hints for New Patriots'. In his hat is a favour: 'Paul & Public Good'. In front of Tooke, and leading the procession is Bosville, a shambling elderly man scattering coins from his hat; he says: "There's a Penny apiece, for you Lads! & now Hollo out - "Paul forever!" and then Ill give each of you a Ride, in my Coach & Four! - Hollo boys!!" In his pocket is a 'List of the London Correspo[nding] Society'. Behind the goose Cobbett marches aggressively, putting his top-boot to the bird's rump, and blowing a fiery blast from a trumpet: 'Glorious News! - Paul for ever! - damnation to the Whigs'. In his left hand he holds out a sheaf of 'Cobbett's Political Register'; from his pocket projects 'Speeches for Paul Goose &c &c &c'. In his hat is a favour inscribed 'Independence and Public Justice'. Behind him and on the extreme right. are hideous crones bawling from the ballads they hold: 'Paul & Plumpers'. They wear favours inscribed 'Paul'. In the background the mob faces the procession, cheering wildly, waving hats and bludgeons, and with the inevitable chimney-sweep. They shout "Paul for Ever" and "Paul & Plumpers". Some (l.) hold out their hats to catch Bosville's coins. Below the design are inscriptions describing the figures (l. to r.): '[1] Tom Paine [i.e. Bosville] distributing Halfpence among the Mob - (Vide, Election at Honiton - "Tom Paine for Ever" - [2] an Old Monk from Brentford - leading poor Goose in a string! (Vide - Paul's address to the Electors of Westminsr [3, the title.] [4] Porcupine [see BMSat 11049] dirtying his Boots, in attempting to give Poor Goosee a shove out of the Kennel. - [5] Ballad Singers at 5 shilling a day closing the Procession.' "The King (left), plainly dressed, sits on a chair on a dais, a pillar and curtain indicating the throne. He angrily addresses a band of Ministers (and others) who are encircled by a ribbon inscribed The Bond of Union; the end of this is held by the Pope (right). Raising a document inscribed Coronation Oath he exclaims: Is that your only Bond of Union? Is that the flimsey Thread that Ties this hetrogenous [sic] Mass. What? have ye hid your base designs beneath the Cloak of Secrecy? Think ye to Catch your Sovereign off his guard? to tempt him to forget his Solemn Oath? and by one desperate Stroke, destroy the Church & Constitution too?!! begone, and instantly give place to honest Men. Lady Conyngham peeps from behind his chair, saying, I do exceedingly Fear & Tremble. The nine Ministers, closely tied together, advance menacingly, each raising a cross in the right hand. The Pope, triumphant and sinister, also holding a cross, says: Strike My Son's Now or never!! The four nearest the picture plane are (left to right) Canning, Brougham, Burdett, and Lansdowne with Scarlett just behind him; the other four are partly hidden and poorly characterized. Lansdowne is copied from satires of 1806-7, when he was Chancellor of the Exchequer: he is dwarfish, and held up by the 'Bond', his legs dangling. Three say respectively: No bolting when you come to the Scratch; Nine to one will certainly be more--than a Match for him; Stick together. "Napoleon is the London street-seller of gingerbread cakes whose wares and patter made him a long-remembered character. He stands in his bakery vigorously drawing out from the arched aperture of his oven a broad shovel (peel) on which are figures of three kings in royal robes holding orb and sceptre. They are 'Bavaria', 'Wirtembg (very fat), and 'Baden'. The keystone of the arch is inscribed 'New-French Oven for Imperial Gingerbread'. Napoleon, in profile to the right., wears a feathered cocked hat and a white apron over uniform with jack-boots. Behind him is a heap of cannon-balls, with a shovel inscribed 'Fuel'. Under the oven is a second and larger arched opening: 'Ash-hole for broken Gingerbread'. Broken and discarded cakes have been swept into it by a broom: 'Corsican Besom of Destruction', which lies on the ground against a (gingerbread) galleon flying the flag of 'Venice', a crowned skull inscribed 'Spain', a boot inscribed 'Italy', a Papal tiara, a staff and cap of 'Liberty', a figure, face downwards, showing heavy posteriors in bulky breeches inscribed 'Holland'; two fragments, 'Switzerland' and 'Netherlands'; a Habsburg eagle, inscribed 'Austria', the crowns falling from both heads; a tricolour flag, inscribed 'vive le Republique Francois' from whose shaft falls a bonnet rouge. There are also sceptres, a rosary, a coroneted skull, a fleur-de-lis. From it pour crowns, coronets, orders, stars, sceptres, a cardinal's hat, three documents with pendent seals inscribed respectively 'Principality', 'Pension', 'Dukedom'. On the extreme right. is a solid chest with three drawers inscribed respectively 'Kings & Queens', 'Crowns & Sceptres', 'Suns & Moons'. On it stand unbaked figures crowded together: 'Little Dough Viceroys, intended for the next new Batch!' In the front row: Sheridan, Fox, Moira, Derby. "Diogenes stands in the House of Commons between the two front benches; both arms are thrown out towards Burdett with a dramatic gesture; in one hand is his lantern, illuminating the patriot at close range; small clouds at his feet indicate that he is a ghost. He turns his head to look steadily at three members on the front Ministerial bench (left), saying: "An Honest Man is the noblest work of God" [Pope, 'Essay on Man', quoted by Burns, cf. British Museum Satires No. 11562]. The three culprits (unrecognizable) register shame and terror, their hair standing on end. Burdett stands by the front bench (right) on which is his hat, displaying to the frightened Ministers (one intended for Perceval) a document headed 'Magna Charta--Pro Rege, lege, grege' [see British Museum Satires No. 11547]. Except for one member on the front bench, those behind Burdett stand, five being depicted, three of whom wave their hats. All the occupants of the gallery wave still more emphatically. "Conspirators prepare an explosion in the vaults of the House of Commons (or of a building symbolizing the Constitution). Massive triple pillars support Gothic arches, the inscription [used by George as a title] etched across the centre pillar round which barrels of gunpowder are piled. The scene is lit by a beam of light slanting from the huge eye of the King whose features emerge faintly from an illuminated patch in dark clouds in the upper right. corner of the design. This strikes the conspirators, all wearing cloaks and steeple-crowned hats reminiscent of Guy Fawkes. The foremost is Grenville who pours on to the paved floor a train of powder from a barrel which he holds, inscribed 'Jesuits Powder'. Next him (r.) Howick leans forward to tilt a barrel of 'True- Whig Gunpowder'. Behind is Lauderdale handling a barrel of 'Gunpowder a la Brissot'. Grenville, Howick, and Buckingham ply their axes on the trunk of a huge oak-tree: 'The Royal-Oak'. In the background are rows of other 'Royal Pippins', just grafted on old stocks. Talleyrand digs the hole, placing his deformed foot on his spade. Napoleon, in profile to the right., is about to plant the pippin, whose root is a coroneted apple inscribed 'William the Norman Robber'; on its branches are other coroneted or crowned pippins. The main stem culminates in the whiskered face of Moira, wearing a royal crown. This is reached through a 'Plantagenet beheaded in 1415', and 'Henry de la Pole beheaded in 1538'. Collateral branches are 'Duchess of Clarence put to death in 1453', 'Hungerford Beheaded 1406', 'Crookback Richard killd at Bosworth', 'Edmund 4th Son of Henry 3d Beheaded', 'Countess Salisbury Beheaded in 1505.' The centre and longest has the head of Cobbett, the others have the heads of Burdett and Horne Tooke. All wear royal crowns; Tooke has clerical bands. The 'Royal-Oak' (r.), an aged but still magnificent tree, whose trunk is gashed by the axes of the late Ministers, has a large royal crown in the centre of its branches, flanked by four giant acorns: 'Protestant Faith' (near a withered branch), 'Integrity of the Lords', 'Independence of the Commons', 'Liberty of the Press'. "Cobbett, driving four ringed hogs, leads (r. to left.) a procession cheered by an enormous crowd. He sits on a 'Political Hog Trough' which rests on a low platform mounted on four solid wheels. Behind him stands Windham, wearing (ironically) a bonnet rouge, and holding up a large scroll inscribed: 'Loyal-Petition of ye Noble and truely Independent-Hogs of Hampshire - Humbly shewing, that the Convention with Junot, was a cursed Humbug upon Old-England! - & that the Three damn'd Convention-Signers ought to be Hanged Drawn & Quarterd without Judge or Jury'. Issues of Cobbett's paper fall to the ground from his seat, all headed 'Cobbett's Political Register' or 'Cobbett's Register' and continuing 'Ignorance of the Ministry', 'Ignorance of the British Command', 'Ignorance of the Admiralty', 'Letter to Sir Rd Phillips', 'Letter to the Duke of York', and 'State of the Army & Navy'. Cobbett is not caricatured and has a complacent expression. Three members of the Opposition push behind at his 'Hog Trough'. Behind them walk hogs on their hind legs, wearing court dress, with sword or cane, and carrying small tricorne hats with tricolour cockades. On the left. is Bosville with a large bag of coins inscribed 'Pigs-Meat'; from this he feeds the two leading hogs of Cobbett's team. Beside him stands Burdett flogging the hogs with a long whip. The middle distance and background are filled with a dense crowd cheering the procession. Those in the two front rows are butchers, banging marrow-bones on cleavers, as at a Westminster election. "Cobbett, surrounded by flames and beset by ghosts, starts back in his chair, overturning his writing-table and dropping his pen. Behind him and on his right is a black replica of himself (his shadow). Over this shadow's shoulder leans the Devil, naked except for a bonnet rouge, bending menacingly towards Cobbett. In the foreground (right) the head and shoulders, in back view, of Sir Charles Gould emerge from clouds, holding up a long scroll: 'the Forfieted Pledge--"my Black Soul I pledge to the Devil for the Truth of my Accusation Wm Cobbett--Witness . . . Goold Judge' [Advocate]. On the opposite side, surrounded by clouds, are the ghosts of three officers, with blank eyes, standing stiffly behind the bar over which hangs a paper: 'Court Martial Chelsea' [see No. 11377]. Damag'd Souls taken in Pawn'. Four bat-like creatures fly away, upwards and to the left. Three have human heads and are Wardle, nearest to Cobbett, Burdett, and (?) Horne Tooke. From Cobbett's tilting table ink, pens, candle-sticks, and lighted candles fall to the ground, the candles setting fire to the many papers which have fallen and are falling: two copies of 'Cobbett's Political Register' are already blazing. "An altered copy of British Museum Satires No. 10389. The two principal figures are substantially the same, but Mrs. Fitzherbert's expression is less subtle; she looks down at her charge with an exulting smile. The feathers in her hair are set in a fillet inscribed 'Ich Dien', her breasts are almost bare, her drapery is more swirling. Her pouch is inscribed 'Amusements for Young Minds', its contents differ, and her book is a 'Missal'. Above them (left) ls inscribed: 'Angels ever bright and fair" Take, Oh Take me to thy Care,"'. The altar is larger and closer to the ascending figures. In place of the Virgin, the Prince of Wales (half length) stands behind it, looking down at the 'Guardian-Angel'. On the altar, which is inscribed 'Sanctum Sanctorum' is an irradiated chalice. The attendant cherubs are (left) Derby, (?) Grey, Grenville; and (right) Norfolk, Burdett, and Windham. Two cherubs have descended from the circle (right) and look fixedly at close range towards the child; they are Fox and Sheridan. The rays are inscribed: 'Bulls', 'Dispensations', 'Indulgences', 'Luxuries', 'Consecrations', 'Cannonizations', 'Remissions', 'Pardons', 'Beatifications', 'Permissions'. "A travesty of Peters's 'An Angel carrying the Spirit of a Child to Paradise', exhibited R.A. 1783, in which the angel is a portrait of Isabella, Duchess of Rutland, and the figures have a background of clouds. Mrs. Fitzherbert, as the angel, flies upwards, her right arm caressingly round a little girl, her left pointing up to an irradiated and burlesqued altar, surrounded with cherub's heads, which recede in aerial perspective from the lower heads, which are fully characterized, to the upper ones, which are small. These angels are (left) Windham, Grenville, Grey, Erskine, Grattan, and a (tiny and unrecognizable) Lord Holland. On the right are Sheridan, Norfolk, Fox, Burdett, and Derby. [These identifications are by Lord Holland. They are self-evident, except Grattan who resembles Carlisle, or Jekyll, and has a profile completely unlike other portraits and caricatures. Wright and Evans give Stanhope for Windham and Carlisle for Grattan. Lord Holland is not characterized, and the identification can rest only on Gillray's statement.] The altar is lit by four large and guttering candles; over it, stiff and grotesque, are a Virgin and Child, 'La Sainte Veirge' [sic]. The head and hands of a demon emerge from a chalice which is flanked by vases of flowers. Three books surround the altar each open at a print: the Pope holding his cross and wearing a tiara; the many-headed Beast of Revelation (cf. British Museum Satires No. 5534, &c); and a grotesque rendering of the Saint-Esprit, or dove of Pentecost. The rays, which descend towards Mrs. Fitzherbert, are inscribed 'Indulgences', 'Absolutions', 'Luxuries', 'Absolutions', 'Dissipations'. Mrs. Fitzherbert is a stout figure, whose realism is burlesqued by outspread wings and floating draperies. In her hair are three large plumes, emblem of the Prince of Wales; a cross hangs from her neck, a rosary flies outward. A large pouch inscribed 'Play-Things' is attached to her waist: from this hang a lighted censer and a rosary; from it project the head of a saint (burlesqued), a calvary in a bottle, a book: 'Brighton Breviary', a monstrance, St. Andrew holding his cross, a bunch of leaves. Mrs. Fitzherbert registers determined fanaticism; the little girl, childish devotion. They ascend between dark douds. "Burdett in armour stands with legs astride, sword raised, left fist clenched, making an onslaught on a book which is on the ground, its pages slashed and tattered. On these are fragments of inscriptions: 'Red Book for the . . .'; 'Treasury'; 'Pensions' [twice]; 'Pensions 4000, 3000, 2.400'; 'Teller o the Ex[chequer] . . . 6000 4.000'; 'Sinecu[res]'. He declaims: "I will not stop, - till I have cut out the accursed leaves of the Red Book!!!" His sword-blade is 'Took's Improved Steel'. On the right Tooke peers at him, holding aside a curtain; he says: "Come Come my pupil goes on better than I expected - very indeed for a beginning yes - yes - he'll do after a little practice" [see British Museum Satires No. 10731, &c.]. He holds a book: 'Diversions of Purley' [see (e.g.) British Museum Satires No. 9020]. On the left John Bull, dressed as Sancho Panza with a short tunic and ruff, gapes at his master, his hands on his knees. He says: "What the deuce is he at now! he will certainly get himself into some scrape or other." "A fantastic and complicated design. Queen Caroline leans back in an arm-chair, pen in hand, staring as if at a vision, her black locks flying outwards and upwards. Above her head, as if sprung from it, is an owl with the cross of the Order of St. Caroline (see British Museum Satires No. 13810) in its beak, and on its head a fool's cap with bells. She wears a décolletée dress with voluminous gathered trousers, as in many prints; her right foot is placed regally on a footstool. Her right arm rests on a table and on the paper on which she writes: To the King. She listens to a serpent held up by Dr. Parr, brandyfaced and naked except for his wig, one of several figures pressing round her, partly obscured by shadow. Lieut. Hownam looks over her right shoulder, two other faces are partly hidden, one may be Flinn, the other resembles Burdett. The aquiline profile of Hobhouse is behind Parr. On the right stands a broom, supporting a wig and gown (Brougham); another wig and gown beside it must indicate Denman; both are in back view. On the left and in the foreground stands Wood, as a devil, hairy and naked except for a furred gown, symbol of the alderman. He turns towards her, holding a baton, topped by a little cap of Liberty, and strings attached to two tiny processions: a state-coach (the Queen's) drawn by four horses and a band of armoured men on horseback, with banners, one inscribed Brass [the braziers' procession, see British Museum Satires No. 14119]. They are surrounded by clouds of dust. Over his shoulder look Cobbett, wearing a red cap with tricolour cockade and brandishing a bone (Paine's, see British Museum Satires No. 13525). To left and right of these advisers are evil gangs (cf. British Museum Satires No. 14194): a procession (left) of men with tall staves or pikes topped by caps of Liberty, and with a tricolour banner inscribed No Church no King no Constitution Universal Suffrage & Annual Plunder for ever. They wave their hats and cheer; their leader wears an apron. Above them floats a figure of Justice holding scales and a crown. Behind on the right naked arms raise firebrands, fanatical faces loom from the shadow; one at least has the snaky locks of Discord. The ornate round table at which the Queen writes is piled with boxes; on the largest, inscribed Secrets of the Baron, stands a small lifelike image of Bergami dressed as a courier. Other objects are a wallet from which projects a paper: 50,000 Per Ann [see British Museum Satires No. 14145], a vase of flowers, a decanter labelled (punningly) Tent [see British Museum Satires No. 13818]. On the floor are two figurines, one in back view, the other of Mahomet dancing (see British Museum Satires No. 13929). At the Queen's feet are her much-feathered four-cornered cap, and papers, one headed My dear Ca . . . and signed BB [Bartolomeo Bergami], the other beginning My dear C and signed Mat. [Wood]. By the broom are bulky bundles of papers: Brooming Correspondence and Defence of Moth[er Red Cap, see British Museum Satires No. 13975]. The owl is the base of an irregular inverted cone, formed of cloud-borne objects from the Queen's head. These are: Cobbets Register, The Times (see British Museum Satires No. 13968), The Champion (see British Museum Satires No. 13677), realistically depicted; three conical caps of Liberty with tricolour cockades inscribed respectively Bat, Cat, Mat [for Bergami, the Queen, and Wood; the title of a print, see British Museum Satires No. 14206 [23]]; Letters to Watch Makers [of] Coventry C B, over which hangs a watch and chain. Two large sketch-books, open: [1] Journal of a Tour to Jerusalem [see British Museum Satires No. 13918, &c.] with a view of a large mosque inscribed Temple of Solomon C.B del. [2] [Mem]oranda of the [Vi]lla d Este, facing a view of a large lake-side villa (see British Museum Satires No. 13857); this partly covers a third sketch: [Bucki]ngham House [the Queen's House as in British Museum Satires No. 14175]. "A frigate with a life-like bust of Queen Caroline as figurehead runs down a similar vessel with a huge and grotesque head of George IV. The latter heels over and is about to be swamped; the King's head looks up in terror at the complacent features of his wife bearing down upon it. The head is further threatened by the jaws, bristling with teeth, of two whales in the foreground. On the level deck of the 'Queen Caroline' stand Brougham, holding a broom, and Denman, both in wig and gown and holding a document inscribed 'Defence'. Behind them is (?) Lushington (not characterized); more prominent is Wood, in a court-suit, holding a pole supporting a block of wood inscribed 'A Chump' [cf. British Museum Satires No. 13899]. The other two are Burdett, holding out a paper inscribed 'Westminster', and his fellow member Hobhouse. The crew of the 'Royal George' are either in the water or falling from the mast-head among spars and ribbons of sails. Castlereagh and Wellington are in the sea; one says: "My fall has been Triangular" [cf. British Museum Satires No. 14135], the other: "Oh! this is worse then the Grape Shot at Waterloo." On top of them falls Sidmouth with his clyster-pipe; he vomits, &c., saying: "this will a cooling Draughts [sic] and purge our foul stomachs." Two green bags (see British Museum Satires No. 13735), inscribed 'Bag', fall into the water; just above them is Eldon, dropping the mace and the Purse of the Great Seal; he exclaims: "O my Wool sack." Liverpool falls head first, dropping a large purse and coins; he says: "This Pool goes against my Liver." By his toe is a paper: 'Tresury'. Sir John Leach, with a paper inscribed 'Milan' [see British Museum Satires No. 13755, &c.], also falls. Nearest the masthead is the Archbishop of Canterbury. Beside him, sirloin, bottle, plates, knife, &c., are falling. "Apparently an imitation (better drawn) of British Museum Satires No. 15716. Wellington drives (left to right) four galloping horses, each with a human head. The leaders are Lyndhurst (piebald) and Scarlett (black), both wearing legal wigs; the wheelers Brougham, also in his wig, and Burdett. He flicks his lash over the leaders, saying, 'Kim up Motley--keep together odd Rat [Lyndhurst] ye--or I'll lay it into ye!!' The King's (pleased) face is seen through the coach window; he says: 'I say Arthur, you are the Man Wot can make'm go, if you like!!' The guard is Lady Conyngham: she stands up, blowing her horn. She wears a guard's greatcoat and satchel over her dress and holds a blunderbuss. The coach is the 'Windsor Castle'; 'Wellington & Co.'; 'G R 1829'. It has just passed and overturned a two-wheeled ass-cart, the ass falling on its head, the driver, Eldon, sprawling on the ground. In the cart, which is inscribed 'John Eldon Rubbish Carter' [see British Museum Satires No. 15700, &c], are big bundles of 'Anti-Catholic Petetions' [see British Museum Satires No. 15661, &c.]. Standing behind and below the guard's dickey is Peel as 'cad', or conductor; he thumbs his nose at Eldon, saying, 'There's a Guard for the Sovereign eh!!!' "Pitt (caricatured), dressed as Rolla, addresses a group of chieftains (left); the ranks of the Peruvian army with erect spears watch from the background. Below the (printed) title is printed Rolla's patriotic speech from 'Pizarro', II. ii, beginning 'My brave Associates', 'and ... we serve a Monarch whom we love . . .' (see British Museum Satires No. 9436). He stands with both arms outstretched, head turned in profile to the left, pointing rhetorically across the sea to the Spaniards, whom Sheridan (in this speech) equates with French republicans, and who are here represented by the Foxites. The Peruvians wear feathered head-dresses and feather kilts in the manner of Red Indians, except Dundas, who wears tartan and feathered head-dress. The rope-pullers are in the foreground (right); at the extreme end is Wellington with his back to the church, straining hard. Next is Peel, wearing an orange waistcoat (cf. British Museum Satires No. 15690) badly stained by the rope; Brougham, a broom-girl dressed as in British Museum Satires No. 14769, is next, with Mackintosh in Highland costume beside him. In front of them is Burdett, very tall and thin, holding up his hat and shouting 'Down with it--never mind the People' [see British Museum Satires No. 16058]. In front is O'Connell, in wig and gown, shouting, 'By St Patrick I've got the Rope over at Last.' Behind these principals are more men, tugging at a second rope. On a green field topping a cliff behind the church-breakers is Eldon wearing a smock and guiding a plough; he turns to shout to the petitioners by the church, who will be crushed by the falling tower: 'Look to your selves People.' Along the horizon (left) is a Papist procession with lighted tapers, the Host, crosses, a grotesque Pope, and figures under a canopy. It approaches St. Paul's whose dome rises above the sky-line. "Members of the Opposition in a row, talk in couples, except for the arch-egotist Erskine (see British Museum satires no. 9246) on the extreme left, who exclaims: "Peace - and I not consulted 'tis very strange, by Gad". Sheridan (left), seated in profile to the right, reads the 'Gazzette Extraordina[ry] Peace! Peace!' with an expression of dismay. He says: "It is here, sure enough, I can scarcely believe my eyes, then all my fine speeches respecting the continuance of the War is dish'd, its no farce." Burdett stands with legs astride looking down at him; he says: "O it can't be true depend upon it." The centre pair, Fox and Bedford, face each other in profile. Fox says: "This is a curious kind of business. I heard of it at the Crown and Anchor." Bedford, in top-boots, and a riding whip under his arm, answers: "I heard of it in Bedfordshire." "Lord Hawkesbury as a drummer boy, very thin and weedy, marches (left to right) in front of John Bull with awkward and shambling aggressiveness; he steps on to a rotten plank inscribed 'Heart of Oak' which connects the shores of England and France. His drum-sticks are a rolled document, 'Preliminaries', and an olive branch. Across his dishevelled bearskin is a ribbon: 'Peace'; from it hangs the end of a fool's cap. From his coat-pocket issues a paper: 'Instructions from Park Place' [Pitt's London address]; [So given in the Royal Kalendar (alphabetical list of the House of Commons). Broadley notes that Malmesbury lived at Park Place, Henley (this was his third country house). The crest on the drum, as well as political probability, supports the Pitt interpretation.] his drum is slung from his neck by a tricolour ribbon, and has on its side the Pitt crest, a stork holding an anchor. His expression is deprecatingly wary; and he looks sideways at John Bull, who is accompanied by a swarm of little English 'Jacobins'. He says: "Allons, Enfans de la Patrie! - now's your time Johnny! - my dear Boys! - did not I promise long ago, to take my Friends by the hand, & lead them on to March to the Gates of Paris? - Allons! vive la Liberta!!" In the narrow Channel which he is about to cross float Britannia's discarded shield, a large money-bag of '£400 Million', and papers inscribed: 'Malta', 'West India Islands', 'Cape of Good Hope', 'Map of Egypt', 'Restoration of French Monarchy', 'List of Soldiers & Sailors Killed'. John Bull (left), a simple yokel, very fat and good-natured, marches after Hawkesbury in high glee waving his hat; over his civilian dress is a sword-belt from which a sword falls to the ground, hilt downwards. He shouts: "Rule Britannia! - \ Britannia Rules the Waves!!! \ Caira! - Caira!" He is being urged forward by a crowd of little figures, members of the Opposition, who wave or wear their bonnets rouges. They vary in scale: the most prominent is Fox who marches along blowing a trumpet; Norfolk drags John forward, clutching his coat with both hands; behind Norfolk Tierney's head appears. Behind Fox is Sheridan pushing John from behind; on Sheridan's right is General Walpole; on his left, Burdett. Behind him on the extreme left is Moira, with a conspicuous whisker. Other persons are represented by arms waving caps. In front and under John's feet are three tiny naked mannikins: Nicholls holdup his eyeglass, his legs attached to his shoulders to show that he is 'nobody', cf. "A wildly burlesqued rendering of the Middlesex candidates and their supporters. In the foreground (l.) a group from Westminster heads the procession. "Windham, not caricatured, lies in bed dreaming, his right hand extended, his left hand against his head. The coverlet is patterned (inconspicuously) with dragons, &c. The bed is surrounded by solid clouds, supporting visions. At its head (right) is an olive branch bent down by the weight of a vulture, which clutches a bleeding hare, while it savagely croaks 'Peace!' On the left Death, a skeleton on stilts formed of spears (skeleton A stilts coloured red), bestraddles a pile of British trophies; one spearpoint pierces a 'List of British Conquests: Cape of Good Hope Malta Egypt West India [Islands]'; the other rests on a tilted dish inscribed 'Oh! the Roast Beef of Old England', from which a sirloin is slipping. The other objects are steaming pudding, an overturned tankard inscribed 'J. Bull's Old Stout', small cask of 'True British Spirits', spilling its contents; two coronets, a mitre, and a mace. The skeleton, reminiscent of Death in BMSat 6699, by Gillray, is in back view, turning a grinning head towards Windham; ['London und Paris' quotes (p. 319), as probably in Gillray's mind, Milton, 'Paradise Lost', ii. 285-7: 'Death Grinn'd horrible a ghastly smile, to hear His famine should be fill'd . . .'] it wears a large bonnet rouge and in the right hand is a cord attached to the dripping blade of a guillotine. This emerges from clouds beside the blazing dome of St. Paul's, from which the ball and cross are falling. On the extreme left is the Tower of London flying the French flag. By the foot of the bed stands a fat demon with barbed tail, webbed wings, and the features of Fox; he plays a guitar and sings delightedly: "Caira! - Caira! - Ca-i-r-a!" [cf. BMSat 10566, where he has discarded the song]. By the near side of the bed sits (on a chamber-pot) a small figure, Justice, with bowed head registering despair, her scales broken and dismantled, her sword, inscribed 'Justicia', broken. Emerging from clouds are four figures: Hawkesbury, with a sulky, youthful profile, writes 'Peace' on Britannia's 'Death-Warrant'. Behind him stands Pitt guiding his hand, a finger to his lips. Near them Bonaparte, scarcely caricatured, stands arrogantly, holding a rope which is round the neck of Britannia, while he points imperiously towards the guillotine on his right. She stands full face, weeping, her wrists shackled, with a broken shield and trident. Behind her is a (captured) fleet, in full sail, with tricolour flags. Above their heads flies a demoniac Fame, blowing two trumpets. Two groups of tiny decapitated figures kneel at the head of the bed, appealing to the sleeper. The French are on Windham's right, those in the front row being evidently (left to right) the Dauphin, Louis XVI, Marie Antoinette, Mme Elisabeth; the King holds out a placard: 'Oh! Remember Our Cause! poor Ghosts of French Ladies and Gentlemen.' Behind, two bishops are conspicuous. On Windham's left are men in peers' robes; their placard is inscribed: 'Ah! See what is to become of Us poor English Men of Consequence'. In the foreground are two groups of (Opposition) politicians with the heads of rats. One eats from a dish of 'Cheese Parings', the other from a coffer of 'Candle Ends', inscribed 'Treasury' [both phrases derive from a speech by Windham in which he is alleged to have derided paltry economies, an old gibe, see BMSat 9515 and 'Windham Papers', ii. 178]. Both are filled with papers inscribed 'Place', 'Pension', 'Sinecure', 'Office'. The former group are identified (in Gillray's hand) [On a slip evidently written for Miss Banks, pasted to an impression from the Banks Collection.] as Erskine, Sheridan, Tierney, Norfolk, and Bedford; the latter are Nicholls, Grafton, Stanhope, and the Earl of Oxford (who is unmistakably Burdett), Sir G. "A pair of breeches, formerly belonging to Fox, much inflated and forming two merging and transparent globes with projecting legs, is poised (at the seat) on three ostrich feathers, erect in a round bed of (ministerial) roses (see BMSat 10558, &c). Within these globes members of the Ministry sit at a round table, devouring loaves and fishes. The nearest ones are in back view, and have the heavy posteriors characteristic of the Grenvilles (cf. BMSat 10530). Lord Grenville, a fish in each hand, with Lord Ellenborough on his right, Buckingham on his left., and, next the latter, Lord Temple. They sit on a cushioned bench like those of Parliament, which follows the curve of the breeches. The others, left to right from Temple, are Spencer, Windham, Erskine, Petty, Lord Holland, [Identified by his own note.] Moira, who sits full face opposite Grenville, Lauderdale, Sheridan, Howick; Sidmouth on Ellenborough's right completes the circle. All are gormandizing on fish in different degrees, except Spencer and Holland who eat normally. Before Grenville is a dish containing two large fish: 'Treasury' and 'Exchequer', see BMSat 10543, &c. A dog, its collar inscribed 'Tierney', puts its forefeet on the bench, yapping at Grenville's back (cf. BMSats 10128, &c., 10603). On the ground beside him are three cats eating fish in a dish inscribed 'Tabbeys'; their collars are inscribed 'Bet Fox', 'Fitz', and 'Jordan'. Rats surround a dish inscribed 'Scribblers' [ministerial journalists and pamphleteers]. On the extreme left is the corner of a pound through which poke the heads of two (normal) swine, ringed and shedding tears. The swine who are being flogged have, beside their human heads, ringed snouts, both heads being enclosed in a wooden triangle. The leaders are Fox, with Norfolk (cf. BMSat 9205) on his right and Bedford (cf. BMSat 8684) on his left, the others are less prominent: Erskine, Tierney, looking over Fox's back, Burdett, Derby, and Nicholls (left), while M. A. Taylor (right), smaller than the others, scampers to right instead of left. Beside the pound (left) stands a grinning yokel (John Bull); on its post is a placard: 'London Corresponding Society - or the Cries of the Pigs in the Pound'.
