Abstract:
"Plate from the 'Satirist', xiii. 193. In the text the title continues '. . ., "alias" War'. A satire on the Congress of Prague. Four sovereigns, completely unlike the men in question, in conference. The Tsar sits behind a small rectangular table on which are displayed implements of war in miniature: cannon, pyramids of cannon-balls, muskets, swords, drums, &c., and flags on one of which are fleurs-de-lis. On the left stand the King of Prussia and the Emperor of Austria, on the right is Napoleon. Alexander extends his hands rhetorically, turning to the left, with a puckered scowl, to say to the two Germans: "Come Gentlemen see first if you can agree--if not we'll all fight!" He has quasi-Kalmuck features, and wears an odd-shaped crown, an ermine-bordered robe, with a jewelled necklace and a Greek cross. Frederick William III, on the extreme left, clutches the hilt of his sword and puts his left hand to his cocked hat as if ready to doff it, he turns to Francis I, towards whom a label issues from his mouth: "I am ready to treat or to fight"; a second label floats to the left, inscribed 'Infernal Scoundrel'. Francis I, looking distracted, stands directed to the right, legs apart, and in his left hand is his sabre, the blade of which curves over the Tsar's head, but both hands touch his crown, and he says: "I will wear an independant Crown." He wears hussar uniform, cloak, sash, and elaborately embroidered tunic and pantaloons. Napoleon, tall and burly, with heavy whisker and aquiline profile, wears a plumed bicorne with tricolour cockade and very tattered uniform leaving his legs almost bare, with one dilapidated jack-boot and one damaged stocking; he has a long sword. He stands aggressively with arms dramatically extended, saying, "My Friends! all we wish is Peace." A chain is attached to each great toe, which is fastened to the necks of two miserable princes, tiny figures standing between his outstretched legs. One (left), Charles IV of Spain, wearing a crown and robe, grotesquely knock-kneed and despairing, stands full-face. The other, wearing a crown with uniform and sword, stoops in profile, looking up abjectly at Napoleon's legs. On the extreme right, in the middle distance, is a tall Spanish don, much emaciated, wrapped in a cloak. He looks down with folded arms at a fat British officer beside him, who says: "I ll countenance Austria into our interests." The Spaniard: "I'll be damned if I go to meet a Frenchman in Prague, while there is a Frenchman to meet in Spain!!!" Behind them in the background a tiny Napoleon, wearing a grotesque crown and holding a sword, marches downhill at the head of his soldiers carrying flags; he has a melancholy expression and approaches the edge of a precipitous descent."--British Museum online catalogue

"Satire on the negotiations for the Peace of Paris. A lion and lioness (the King and Queen) look in alarm from the window of a coach (Great Britain) as it crashes against a large rock. Lord Bute, the driver, and Princess Augusta, who has been sitting beside him, fall headlong to the ground and the horses (bearing names connected with British actions in the Seven Years War: "Germany", "Guardeloup", "Pondechery", "America", "Martinico" and "Quebec") run off. Bute cries out, "De'el dam that Havanna Snuff its all most blinded me". The postilion, Henry Fox, lies on the ground having hit his head on a rock labelled "Newfound Land"; a speech balloon lettered "Snugg" emerges from his mouth. Behind him Pitt, holding a whip, grasps the leading horse's reins; the Marquis of Granby gallops up to assist him, together with William Beckford (who was shortly to become Lord Mayor of London) and the Duke of Newcastle. In the foreground is a conflict involving a number of journalists: Bute's supporters, Arthur Murphy and Tobias Smollett shoot their pistols at Pitt, and further to the right Charles Churchill, in clerical robes, fires a cannon labelled "North Briton" at them, causing another man to fall to the ground his arm resting on a copy of the Gazetteer (the fallen man must be either Charles Say, editor, or John Almon, contributor to the Gazetteer, an anti-Bute newspaper), with the headline, "A letter from Darlington" (a reference to Henry Vane, 2nd Earl of Darlington, a relation of Bute's by marriage). The British lion beside Churchill urinates on the Scottish thistle. Behind this group, the Duke of Cumberland runs forward anxiously mopping his bald head, having lost his wig. In the background are Lord Mansfield and the Earl of Loudon, the latter suggesting that they retreat (a reference to his failure to capture Louisbourg from the French in 1757). Abstract:
A crowd of visitors on the right are shown approaching the military camps at Coxheath indicated on the left with tents and cannon. The crowd, preceded by a barking dog, is chiefly comprised of women, led by a prostitute in pseudo-military garb who is carried on the shoulders of a soldier. Behind her a young woman leads a fat military officer wearing a large wig and carrying his sword in his hand. Following are two elderly women, one with a large muff, the other holding crutches and seated in a wheelbarrow pushed by an old man. Other women and soldiers make up the crowd. In the left foreground are three cannons, inscribed "9 P.", "9 Pounder", and "G.R. 12", the latter being admired by several women

There are tents and marquees with wings; a man beats a drum, three orientals wearing turbans race through the air beating cymbals. In the foreground (left) spectators on horseback look up in amazement, one horse throws its rider; geese, goslings, and pigs are under the horses' feet. On the right the King and Queen sit together on a bank; the King gazing through a small telescope, the Queen looking at him with delighted astonishment. "Folding frontispiece to "A Political Lecture on Heads, alias Blockheads!! A Characteristic Poem: . . .Drawn from Craniological Inspection, after the Manner of Doctors Gall and Spurzheim, of Vienna. By Don Juan Asmodeus. London. Printed for the Author, and Published by John Fairburn, 2, Broadway, Ludgate-Hill (Price One Shilling)." Ten half length caricature portraits arranged in two rows, and, except for the last two, in separate compartments, each illustrating a section of the verse-satire. The date is after Peterloo (16 August 1819), see British Museum Satires No. 13258, and before the King's death (29 Jan. 1820). [1] 'Derry-Down-Triangle', Castlereagh, with ass's ears, his head, adorned by a tiny gibbet, turned in profile to the left, holds up a scourge. On a scroll is the motto 'EIREN·GO·BRAY' (see British Museum Satires No. 13301). [2] 'State Jackal', Canning, directed to the left, holds a pistol in each hand. On his head is a triangle, bells hanging from its apex as from a fool's cap. Behind him is a package inscribed 'Lisbon 20.000 weight'. For his much-attacked mission to Lisbon see British Museum Satires No. 12872, for the duel with Castlereagh, British Museum Satires No. 11370, &c. [3] 'Quack Doctor' [cf. British Museum Satires No. 9849], Sidmouth, in profile to the left, holds a pike on which is speared a ball inscribed 'Circular Pills' [see British Museum Satires No. 13282, &c.]. On his head is a pestle and mortar inscribed 'Drugs for John Bull'. At his back is a large 'Bible' (like Liverpool he was an Evangelical). [4] 'Chancery Jack', the shoulders of Eldon, who scowls to the right, emerge from a 'Coal Tub' (as son of a Newcastle hoastman or coal-broker). He wears wig and gown, across his forehead is a bandage inscribed 'In Chancery'; from his mouth issues the word 'Equity'. [5] Liverpool, in profile to the left, spoons into his mouth liquid from a bowl of 'Water Gruel for the Poor' held in his left hand. On his head is a round tea-tray inscribed '£4.000'; on this are two cups and an urn inscribed 'Cordial Tea'. [6] 'Croaking-Frog--' Croker sits, pen in hand, in profile to the left; on his head is a frog. At his shoulder is a flag inscribed Dry . Rot . In . Navy' above two broken anchors. He says "Fal de Raltit," and before him is a paper: 'Talavira [sic] Algiers 2000'. He has an oddly shaped seat, resting his arm on a 'Quarterly Review', above a longer (curved) block inscribed 'Couriers'. (He was Secretary to the Admiralty, see British Museum Satires No. 12310, author of 'Talavera', a leading contributor to the 'Quarterly', and (with Arbuthnot) manager of the Press for the Ministry.) [7] 'Dunderass--' Lord Melville (First Lord of the Admiralty), in tartan, is in profile to the left, holding a pinch of snuff. Across his chest is a broad band: 'Pickings of Dad 60.000 [see British Museum Satires No. 10377, &c.] Place 10.000.' He wears a curious head-dress topped by a man-of-war surrounded by smoke. [8] 'Waterloo-Man--' Wellington, so styled by Hone, see British Museum Satires No. 13302, stands in profile to the left, wearing a cocked hat on which stands a cannon. He holds a dagger transfixing a bleeding heart; behind his back is a bundle inscribed 'Iquisition' [sic], across his chest is a placard: 'Coruption [sic] Prize . On the shoulders of each sits a French sansculotte soldier, cadaverous and sinister; the central figure wears a cocked hat from which project cannon or trench-mortars, he holds a tricolour flag. The others wear bonnets-rouges; one (left) blows a trumpet, the other (right) beats a drum. The Dutchmen are impassively smoking pipes, two wear French cockades; from the hips of each project the mouths of cannon. The light background of the circle stands out on a tinted ground; above it is a scroll, apparently issuing from the mouth of the trumpet: 'Terror the Order of the Day'. A line of seven figures all caricatured with animalistic features, marching right to left, shown full-length. The first character blows a horn, carries a violin and bow in his hands and on a string around his waist another horn with smoke coming out hangs over his behind; he is wearing spectacles and a scarf aroung his head as well as a Roman-style pink dress; he has wings and appears to have a breast. In the text above his head: En avant la renommeé? Sur l'air: j'ai du bon tabac, dans Misantropie et repentir. The second figure is wearing Roman armour and carries a long-handled pan; he has claws for hands, a bird's face and tail feathers. On top of his helmet sits a rat. The text above his head reads: Tais toi! Geulard, vilain menteur de Constitutionel; j' t'ai dis que l'premier qui tomeroit sous ma griffe, il aura beau crier ... la mort ... aura.." The third figure with a large belly has a highly caricatured face with large, exaggerated features and fangs; he wears a bonnet. He is armed with a knife hanging in his belt as well as a long sword on a chain. Above his head are the words: Mais, mon Capitaine t'as dis qu't' allois les prendre en flanc j' l'aime bien, moi, l'flanc, tu m'en donneras? .. ain!" The fourth and fifth figures both have wolf-like faces. The one also has a tail and carries a hoe and a basket with a second wicker basket on his back. The writing above his head, " Qu' est-ce qu' en veut? Des lettres de falaise, en voulez vous d' la Chicorée?" The other's clothes are tattered and short, with a sash around his waist; he wears a straw hat and smokes a pipe. Above his head is written, "J' vons avertir not' Capitaine, qu' j'ons vu' à la Rapée des Goujons ... ultras. The final two, both with large snouts and fangs, surround a cannon, the one is pulling it and the other standing crossed-armed looking angrily at his companion in conversation with the figure ahead of him. Above their heads, first, "On dit qu' i' z'ont l'vent su' nous mais c'est qu' j' disque p'tite pluis abat grand vents" and last "On! si j' pouvois attraper l'beau local (l' bocal) aux Conichons ... Oh! c'est sure."

He sits on bales of Taxes; to his back is tied a huge bundle of Last Wars Taxes. His clothes are tattered; three pockets hang inside out, inscribed To Let. At his side (left), and in profile to the right, kneels a noble Spaniard, in very theatrical dress, with trunk hose, cloak, and ruff. He has a spear from which hangs a pennant inscribed Libertas. He puts his hands together in a gesture of prayer: I come once again, and on my kneens [sic] to implore your Aid, we are indeed grateful for former Services, and beleive that you fought purely for Spain and not for yourselves--Save us from our pretended Friends they are worse then Enemies--Save us, and the World, from the destruction of Liberty--. John bites his thumbs despairingly; he answers: I pity you, but I can only give you advice, when you came to me before, I was a Strong Man, and free, but I am now exhausted in saving you, and destroying your great Enemy--See how I am fetter'd--! My Creditors enchain me--! look at my Debt and pity me!-- At his feet a heavy pair of leg-irons lies across many papers inscribed Debt and Taxes. He sits under an oak-tree; from a partly-withered bough hang his cartouche-box and bayonet-belt. In the middle distance (right) Louis XVIII sits astride a cannon (cf. British Museum Satires No. 12797), on a gun-carriage drawn rapidly up a slope by the Tsar and the Emperor of Austria. Both wear uniform and crowns, that of the latter topped by a fool's cap. Both cry: War! War!! War! and blood!! Alexander holds a sword in one hand, a bayoneted musket in the other; Francis holds a sword and a pistol, against his shoulder is the shaft of a flag inscribed Holy Alliance. Louis XVIII leans back, flannelled legs extended, two pistols in his belt, a sword in one hand, a musket in the other. Before him on the cannon is a bowl of soup, &c. The Pope walks at his right, holding a string attached to his nose. The King: By the Powers I shall fall, and lose my Balance Stop!! Stop! I say don't pull so hard you'll rupture [your scored through] Eu rope, this is not suited to my Taste [scored through] Gout I am already crippled and cannot bear it Stop!!!-- The Pope, who wears his tiara and holds his crosier against his shoulder, answers: Fear not, I'll let you into Heaven, through the back door my dear Son. "Queen Caroline as Lucifera sits in a coach made up of objects which figured in the evidence against her. The driver is Bergami, whip in hand (thus representing Satan) on a high box seat; he turns to hand a bottle of wine to the Queen who holds a sack inscribed '50,000' [see British Museum Satires No. 14145]. The beam or chassis is a cannon (see British Museum Satires No. 13850), on this rests the body of the open coach, the front part being the prow of a boat (the polacca, see British Museum Satires No. 13818), the centre part a tub, representing the bath, see British Museum Satires No. 13819, the back part, half of the body of a travelling-coach, is surmounted by half a conical tent (see British Museum Satires No. 13818), the whole making a canopy over the Queen. On the tub-section a coat-of-arms is represented by a diamond-shape blank (hatchment-wise) with two supporters, Bergami and the Devil. Motto: 'Ama et Aude'. The six animals harnessed single file and their riders are adapted from the 'Faerie Queene', relevant quotations being etched below, in eight compartments. The procession advances from the right, down a slope towards a slough, on the verge of which the leading animal, an ass, has fallen, throwing its rider, Alderman Wood in his livery gown, who has dropped two large stacks of papers: 'Addresses ready made' [cf. He grasps a moneybag inscribed 10,000, and holds the ear of a fox which crouches against his knee. He faces John Bull who is stripped to the waist, with a gigantic leech on his back. John, a countryman in patched breeches, registers angry terror and pain; he looks over his shoulder, exclaiming: "D--me what a monstrous Leech! it not only sucks blood but honor also!" Leach says: "I am not plain, Leech, Sir, but by vulgar denomination--I am called Miss Leech if you please--." Beside J. B., and pointing menacingly towards him, are the muzzle of a cannon, a sheaf of bayonets in a chest inscribed 'G R' and 'Steel Lozenges' [see British Museum Satires No. 13513]. "Italian witnesses, in a large bare room or warehouse, where three are being washed in a large bath by Castlereagh, Sidmouth, and Liverpool. The bath is inscribed: 'Waters of Oblivion. Non mi Recordo [sic]--Ministerial Washing Tub--!' The three witnesses are villainous-looking, and coloured brown. Castlereagh empties a bucket over the head of one, saying: "Can the Etheopean change his Colour." Sidmouth, plying comb and scrubbing-brush, says: "Or the leper his Spots." Liverpool turns to a lawyer (right) saying: "I never had such a dirty job in my life." The lawyer, Gifford the Attorney-General, answers: "We must have them perfect in their Story before they go." He holds a document inscribed 'Milan' [see British Museum Satires No. 13755, &c.]. A second lawyer sits at his feet, mending a pair of breeches. He says: "They are truely a filthy set, we must clear them of Vermin." The discarded garments of the men in the tub lie on the ground, with combs, a lump of 'Itch Ointment', and a box of 'Sulphor'. There are also two boxes: one (left) of 'Windsor Soap', the other (right), 'New Rigging from Monmouth Street' (where second-hand clothes were sold). Three ragged ruffians wait their turn, seated on the ground. Two play cards; one says: "Quel Maledetto Sacco"; the other responds "Ah! quel Sacco" (the Green Bag, see British Museum Satires No. 13735). On the wall behind them hang 'Italian Masks and Daggers just imported.' In the left corner the word 'Steelingensat' suggests the scene is a view from the fortress. In the center George II as the white horse of Hanover rides a British lion from whose mouth come the words "Starv'd on Bon pour nicole". The Hanoverian general Otto Christian von Ilten (nicknamed "Confectioner General") confronts the lion and his rider. "Heading to a printed broadside. Four well-dressed men hold open a large bag, resting on the ground, in which stands a fifth, in profile to the right, who says indignantly to one of the openers: "Oh here you are--now for the Truth, the whole Truth & nothing but the Truth, by whose authority did you make Tools of the Clergy, to create divesions [sic] among their Parishione's [sic], & become sources of discord instead of Peace Makers." The other draws back disconcerted, answering: "Indeed it was not my master but the Pit Club, to whom the Nation is so much indebted." The first speaker rejoins: "Yes to whome the Nation is indebted 9 Hundred Millions." A slanting blast issues from the bag to the left, carrying into the air Wellington astride a cannon, who turns round to look anxiously down at the bag, and is followed by a cannon supported on clerical arms and legs and ridden by a bishop. The latter says: "my Minor Cannon are of little use." A little man (? Canning) runs in the blast, below Wellington. Smoke surrounds the bag. The text is the speech of Mr. Marsh at the Hampshire meeting on 12 Jan., when petitions to both Houses in favour of the Queen were resolved on. The plate illustrates a passage from the facetious printed speech: 'Besides the Ultras had a terrible weight of metal for the fight. "A Frenchman, in profile to the left, seated on a globe. To the globe are fixed vertical rods, the upper ends of which terminate in four smaller globes which are thus supported above the principal one; chains link these four globes to a fifth globe above, and slightly longer than, the other four. On this fifth globe is a child from whose bare posteriors six balls are being projected. On two (right) of the four globes are the heads of an ass, and of a man wearing a fool's cap; to their jaws are attached reins which are held by the Frenchman whose right hand is extended in the attitude of an orator. On the third globe is a monkey's head, which more resembles that of a sheep; the fourth globe is blank. The intention of the satire is explained by the inscription beneath the title, 'A F------t ------An Ass------ A Fool------A Monkey------A Nothing'. On the large globe on which the aeronaut sits is a cannon, its muzzle projecting upwards and to the left beyond the contour of the globe. In the centre is the winged head of a bald and bearded man in profile to the left. The donkey stands upon a "Log" which rests upon a "Bible", a paper marked "Address", and a "Liturgy Petition" with a cross on it. The shield contains various images, including three warships, a tankard of beer, military tents next to cannons, and a ram. Hops and barley (or another grain) are present on either side of shield, akin to supporters. Latin mottos are contained within ribbons at the bottom, and read "furiis in censa feror" and "vir tutis sub umbra viti um."

"Heading to a printed broadside. Four Ministers, summoned by the King, sit at a table bending over a crown broken into two pieces. Sidmouth (right), tilting forward his seat, which is a commode, holds his clyster-pipe; in his pocket is a bottle labelled 'Strong Mixture'. He says: "There seems to have been a flaw in it for some years it only required a slight tap to do all the mischief." Liverpool, next him, says: "Some Foreign Cement or a decoction of steel lozenges [see British Museum Satires No. 13513] properly applied may stick them together for the present, but I'm afraid it won't last long, the parts seem of opposite compositions." Castlereagh says, with a sinister smile: "By the Ghost of my Father I will hold it together by a Tringular [sic] Proceeding. & whip it all round" [see British Museum Satires No. 14135]. Wellington, dressed as a field-marshal, and wearing cavalry boots with huge spurs, sits in a chair decorated with military emblems; he says: "Steel filings and leaded paste is the only Composition to be depended on." "Heading to a printed broadside. Four Ministers, summoned by the King, sit at a table bending over a crown broken into two pieces. Sidmouth (right), tilting forward his seat, which is a commode, holds his clyster-pipe; in his pocket is a bottle labelled 'Strong Mixture'. He says: "There seems to have been a flaw in it for some years it only required a slight tap to do all the mischief." Liverpool, next him, says: "Some Foreign Cement or a decoction of steel lozenges [see British Museum Satires No. 13513] properly applied may stick them together for the present, but I'm afraid it won't last long, the parts seem of opposite compositions." Castlereagh says, with a sinister smile: "By the Ghost of my Father I will hold it together by a Tringular [sic] Proceeding. & whip it all round" [see British Museum Satires No. 14135]. Wellington, dressed as a field-marshal, and wearing cavalry boots with huge spurs, sits in a chair decorated with military emblems; he says: "Steel filings and leaded paste is the only Composition to be depended on." At his feet are bayonets and cannon-balls, with (left) a cannon, and a huge ball inscribed 'Bolus'. Behind Sidmouth stands George IV (right) in consultation with Eldon; he weeps, holding his handkerchief to his eye, and says, pointing to his Ministers: "Cant Sid my Tool and L--r--pl, Some how contrive to mend it." Eldon, in Chancellor's wig and gown, holds the lower end of the mace against his chin with a puzzled scowl. He answers: "Dash my Wig if I know what to do! my head's in Chancery." "Satire on the negotiations for the Peace of Paris. A lion and lioness (the King and Queen) look in alarm from the window of a coach (Great Britain) as it crashes against a large rock. Lord Bute, the driver, and Princess Augusta, who has been sitting beside him, fall headlong to the ground and the horses (bearing names connected with British actions in the Seven Years War: "Germany", "Guardeloup", "Pondechery", "America", "Martinico" and "Quebec") run off. Bute cries out, "De'el dam that Havanna Snuff its all most blinded me". The postilion, Henry Fox, lies on the ground having hit his head on a rock labelled "Newfound Land"; a speech balloon lettered "Snugg" emerges from his mouth. Behind him Pitt, holding a whip, grasps the leading horse's reins; the Marquis of Granby gallops up to assist him, together with William Beckford (who was shortly to become Lord Mayor of London) and the Duke of Newcastle. In the foreground is a conflict involving a number of journalists: Bute's supporters, Arthur Murphy and Tobias Smollett shoot their pistols at Pitt, and further to the right Charles Churchill, in clerical robes, fires a cannon labelled "North Briton" at them, causing another man to fall to the ground his arm resting on a copy of the Gazetteer (the fallen man must be either Charles Say, editor, or John Almon, contributor to the Gazetteer, an anti-Bute newspaper), with the headline, "A letter from Darlington" (a reference to Henry Vane, 2nd Earl of Darlington, a relation of Bute's by marriage). The British lion beside Churchill urinates on the Scottish thistle. Behind this group, the Duke of Cumberland runs forward anxiously mopping his bald head, having lost his wig. "Gunboats in the form of coffins are foundering or about to founder. Each has a single cannon in the bows, and a mast with a triangular sail whose corner is held in the teeth of the skull which surmounts the mast. The crews all wear shrouds and bonnets rouges; on the skulls also are bonnets rouges. Some of the men are screaming in the water, where a floating skull holds the end of a sail in its teeth, looking round fiercely at one of the drowning men. Others are still in the coffin-gunboats, holding muskets or making gestures of despair. One says: "Oh de Corsican Bougre, was make dese Gun Boats on purpose for our Funeral." In the background are two British men of war. Two tiny sailors say: "I say Messmate if we dont bear up quickly there will be nothing left for us to do", and, "Rigt [sic] Tom, & I take them there things at the mast head to be Boney's Crest, a Skull without Brains." "Cobbett, astride the neck of a diabolical monster, and followed by demons, is about to land on the English coast, where a crowd hails his return. Below is the sea, and on the right the American shore. Cobbett (a good portrait) holds out a pen in his right hand; the left hand grasps vertebrae supporting a skull and projecting from a box which rests on the monster's back and is inscribed: 'Cobbett's long hidden Treasures or the Relicts of Paine'. The skull wears a bonnet rouge, Cobbett a top-hat with tricolour cockade; he says: "How to delude the Populace.--An advantageous distribution of the Words Liberty, Tyranny, Slavery &c does wonders with the populace Cobb Vol 2. p. 114--I now say Water Water-Water!!!" The monster breathes fiery smoke, and grips Cobbett's gaitered legs with its talons; it has webbed and barbed wings and a long scaly barbed tail. The two demons immediately behind Cobbett carry large papers inscribed respectively: 'Paines [Age of] Reason' [see British Museum Satires No. 13274] and 'Cobbetts Pol. Reg'. The third carries a sheaf of spears and excretes fire inscribed 'Revolution', and smoke inscribed 'Corruption'. The last, a bird-like creature, has a body inscribed 'Plague'; other monsters are advancing from a distance. The ragged and disreputable crowd wave bonnets rouges to the approaching Champion, shouting "Welcome Welcome." They have banners, each topped by a cap of Liberty: a large red flag inscribed 'Hunt and Cobbett' is held by a knock-kneed fellow. A butcher holds on his shoulders a little black boy representing Wooler (see No. 12928, &c.) who holds up a board inscribed 'Black Dwarfe'. He shouts: "Welcome, Welcome, Brother Scribe all our differrences are ended." On another flag, in large letters, 'Riot Deb . . .', another is inscribed '[Liber]ty'. Behind are pikes. On the opposite (American) shore three quakers and a quakeress dance in a ring round a stars and stripes flag. One chants: "Yea, Verily, Friends we rejoice, that the Evil spirit hath departed from us!--" The others answer: "Yea Yea Yea."
