Manuscript on paper of Postillae ("sermons," or treatises) on the gospels and epistles in a style close to Petrus Alberti (or, Aldeberti, or Adalberti).
Description:
In Latin., Script: The main text (artt. 5-41) is copied by two hands in Gothica Cursiva Currens: hand (A) copied ff. 13r-108v (quires II-IX); and hand (B) copied ff. 109r-247v (quires X-XXI partim). The other texts are in similar script types., Decoration: Missing on many pages (ff. 37r-40r, 41v-56r, 67v-78v, 85v-89r, 92v-93v, etc.), but there is red underlining, paragraph marks, stroking of majuscules and punctuation, red headings, and occasional annotations and indications of the sources., and Binding: original blind-tooled brown leather over wooden boards; both covers are decorated with a spread eagle, a rampant lion, and a fleur-de-lis, with an inscription on the front cover. Two leather and brass clasps are attached to the rear board while brass catches are on the front board.

In German and Latin., Watermarks, in gutter: similar to Briquet Monts 11786 and unidentified bull's head., Script: Written by multiple scribes in varying styles of gothic hybrida and bookhand scripts., Crude red initials, 3- to 2-line, throughout; ff. 33v-38r, 113v-114v and 166r-203r rubricated., and Binding: Fifteenth century, Germany. The backs of the quires are cut in. Original sewing on three double supports is laced into almost flush wooden boards, and the tawed skin cores of braided endbands, sewn through the cover, are also laced. The spine is back cornered with lining extending between supports on the outside of the boards. Large vermilion and sepia roses are painted on each edge. Back pastedown (and perhaps the inner front pastedown, covered by paper) consists of a parchment bifolium (Germany, 1200-1250) containing the Sermones de tempore of Johannes Halgrinus de Abbatisvilla. Written in small neat early gothic bookhand, above top line. Binding stays from this and other parchment manuscripts, 13th-14th centuries. Covered in kermes pink skin blind-tooled with an X in a frame on the front board, tying-up marks on the spine, and a frame on the lower one. Five round, brass bosses on each board and one fastening, the catch inset on the upper board, the lower one cut in for the strap.

Description:
In Latin., Script: copied probably by one scribe writing Gothica Cursiva Libraria. When the first letter on a page is a majuscule it is as a rule made larger, with some calligraphic development., Red stroking of majuscules and underlining, red plain generally 3-line initials., Leaves are badly waterstained in the outer lower corner in the second half of the manuscript., and Binding: 15th-16th century. Parchment over light wooden boards; leather spine with three raised bands; marks of two clasps. At the top of the rear board there is an excavation for the staple to which a chain was attached. On the spine parchment label with the handwritten title (19th century?) “JOHANNES HEROLT / Sermones Discipuli / De Tempore / saec. XV. 1436.” At the top of the rear cover close to the spine a printed paper label containing space for a shelfmark covering a large capital “W”; the handwritten shelfmark is “5867”.

Paragraph marks, initial strokes and underlining in red; rubrics added sporadically., and Binding: Fifteenth century, Germany. Sewn on four supports attached to wooden boards. Covers lined with parchment documents; text side pasted down and illegible. Covered in white tawed skin with two fastenings, the catches on the upper board. Remains of label with title on spine; traces of inscription on upper board. Rebacked.

In Latin., Watermarks: Part I similar to Piccard Kreuz III.805; unidentified mountain and unidentified bull's head. Part II has two similar to Briquet Tete de boeuf 15229 and to Piccard Ochsenkopf XII.288; unidentified horn and elongated bell., Script: Part I: Written by three scribes in a running hybrida script: 1 (ff. 1r-75r; arts. 1-3); 2 (ff. 75r-79v, 84v; arts. 4, 5); 3 (ff. 80r-84r; art. 6). Part II: Written by several scribes, all in various styles of running hybrida; ff. 133r-145v, 234r-v is the same hand as Scribe 2 of Part I., Part I: Plain initials, 6- to 2-line, in red; headings in red or black in gothic textura, those in black often enclosed by red rectangles; initial strokes in red. Guide-letters for rubricator in margins. Part II: Plain initials, 5- to 2-line, in red; headings and final colophon enclosed in red rectangles; initial strokes in red. Guide-letters for rubricator., Pattern of stains on ff. 84v-85r suggests parts were originally separate books., and Binding: Fifteenth century. Original sewing on tawed slit straps laced through a tunnel in edge to outside channels in flush wooden boards, pegged with rectangular pegs and the channels filled in. Plain, wound endbands sewn through the spine lining onto tawed cores laced into the back cornering of the boards. The spine is rounded with a parchment lining (unidentified liturgical text: Germany, 12th century) that extends on the inside of the boards between sewing supports; parchment reinforcement strips from same manuscript and from others. Remains of parchment bifolios of a liturgical manuscript (Germany, 13th century) glued inside both covers. Length of page and written space: 121 (88) mm.; 6 mm. between rulings for text. Covered in cream colored, tawed skin. Five hat-shaped bosses and two strap-and-pin fastenings, the pins on the upper board. The lower board is cut in to accomodate the straps. Parchment label glued to upper board: "de sacramentis Speculum humanae saluationis/ Questiones bone Sermones de sanctis;" added below in another hand: "de Sacra questione [?] bo. S. de. S." Lettering on tail: "de sacra question: bo. S. de." Straps wanting.

Headings and underlining for Biblical passages in red. In Latin., This manuscript is number 4 of 6 titles bound together.
