Copy in reverse of the first state of Plate 5 of Hogarth's 'The Rake's Progress' (Paulson 136): Tom and a wealthy old woman are being married in the dilapidated church of St. Marylebone. The bride has only one eye and growths on her forehead; the IHS on the wall behind her serve as a mock halo. In contrast the old woman is attended by a beautiful young woman who has already caught Tom's eye. In the background on the left, the elderly pew opener pushes Sarah Young, carrying Tom's child in her arms, and Sarah's mother; she shakes her keys in their faces to prevent them from entering the church to stop the marriage. Two dogs in the lower left of the image mirror the courtship of Tom and his bride; the courted dog has only one eye. The clergyman is assisted at the altar by a clerk, and a charity-boy kneels at the bride's feet offering a hassock. The Poor Box on the left is covered with a cobweb; there is a crack down the center of the slab with the Commandments on the wall behind the clergyman

"A design in two equal compartments placed side by side. A fat Frenchman (left) sits at a round table in profile to the right, knife and fork in hand, grinning delightedly at a large joint of beef flanked by a vast loaf and a decanter. He wears an enormous cocked hat, Hessian boots, and a coat of quasi-military cut. He says: "Ah What Monsieur Jack Bull you going to starve me!!!" Beside him sits his greyhound, bulgingly replete. From the table hangs a scroll: 'Beef Mutton Veal [bracketed] 002, loaf 005, Plenty'. The table has a cloth, the floor is carpeted. John Bull (right), thin and almost bald, his baggy face showing traces of former tet, sits in profile to the left, with clasped hands, regarding with resigned disgust a small oblong table, on which are a plate of fish (herring and sprats), a small oar, and a meagre dish of potatoes. His ragged coat is that of a once prosperous citizen. He says: "who would have thought it!" From the table hangs a scroll headed 'Pd: Beef 1s, Mutton 10 1/2, Veal 1[s], Butter 1. 6, loaf 1. 9 Potatoes 3d' A pitcher of water stands on the boarded floor. Beside him his emaciated bulldog lies moribund. On the wall in each compartment is a large print: [left] 'A French man in 1788', a copy, reversed of the Frenchman in British Museum Satires No. 5612, Gillray's 'Politeness' (see frontispiece, vol. v); a thin fop taking snuff, and saying over his shoulder (to John Bull), "Vous etes une Bete". Copy in reverse of the first state of Plate 4 of Hogarth's 'The Rake's Progress' (Paulson 135): In this scene two baliffs, one with an arrest notice in his hand, have stopped Tom Rakewell's sedan chair in St. James's Street; Tom is presumably on his way to White's gaming house which can be seen in the background. They are foiled in their attempt to arrest Tom for debt as Sarah Young, the young woman whom he had seduced and abandoned, offers the bailiffs her purse instead. Sarah is now a dealer in millinery as is suggested by the notions falling from her purse. In the right foreground a shoe-black apparently taking advantage of the situation to take hold of Tom's elegant walking stick. Above them a careless lamplighter spills some oil on Tom's head. To the left a Welshman, probably the creditor, honouring St David's day (March 1st) with a leek in his hat, accompanied by his manicured dog, simply watches the scene. In the distance is the gate of St James's Palace with a crowd of sedan-chairs approaching to celebrate the birthday of Queen Caroline

A cottage interior: John Bull, a stout countryman with wrinkled gaiters as in BMSat 7889, 8141, dozes serenely in an arm-chair before a blazing fire, holding a pitcher on his knee. Behind (left), his wife sits spinning; two little boys feed a bird in a wicker cage. A pretty young woman approaches the open door with a milk-pail on her head. Brass utensils are ranged on the chimney-piece, beside which is a roasting-jack with wheel and chain. A well-fed cat and dog sleep amicably by the fire. [2] 'John Bull going to the Wars'. John Bull has enlisted and marches off (left to right) beside a file of soldiers with drawn sabres, the man next him blowing a bugle. He marches with awkward energy, gazing proudly in profile to the right, not to see his wife and children (left), who cling to him, weeping. "A handsome young Highland officer walks arm-in-arm with a slightly taller young woman. Her hair under her flat feathered hat is in a small bag or net of tartan. Behind these walk in single file the family descending in height. First, a youth in Highland uniform, next three girls, the second without a hat, her hair curling on her shoulders. "The Duchess of Devonshire (right), in morning cap and gown, makes tea for Fox and Sam House who sit side by side on a sofa (left). The duchess leans back in her chair, one hand on the tap of the urn, while she hands a cup to a footman who stands with a tray. Sam (left) has been served first; he sits stirring his tea and gazing adoringly at Fox (right), who playfully pats his bald head. A spaniel stands in front of them, begging.
