Plate from 'Town Talk', iv. 247. A procession of coaches through 'Cavendish Square', the houses of which form a background, together with a street which recedes in perspective on the left. The foremost coach (right) has a roof shaped like a Chinese pagoda and decorated with bells; on the apex is a seat occupied by an ape, dressed as a man, who rings a handbell and blows a horn. Bells are attached to the springs of the coach. The arms, surmounted by a coronet, are crossed whips, the crest a fool's head. A man seated on the box turns to the driver to say: "No bad scheme of Sr Harry's to get the Amateur [Coates] to perform today! tolerable attendance." The driver wears a conical hat with a vast brim, manifold capes, and a large nosegay, with top-boots. Two servants sit in the rumble; one points to the ape, saying, "What do you think Tom of our new fellow Servant! did Master get him from Bond Street." The other answers: "Oh No! hes not one of the Loungers [see No. 8377, &c.] Master had him from Exeter Change [menagerie] he has been well educated you see." "Design in a circle. A man and wife seated at a circular breakfast-table. The man, who is obese and a gourmand, sits in profile to the right. holding a bowl with a spoon in it in one hand, a bill of fare in the other inscribed "Soup . . . Turbot. Duck . . Lamb". He is wearing spectacles and a large piece of food projects from his mouth. The cook (right) is showing his master a dead duck, which he holds up in his right hand; in his left, and partly supported by his knee, is a tray on which are two lobsters and a turbot. The lady, who is also fat, holds up her hands in horror at the cook, who, from his leanness, his profile, and his bag-wig, solitaire, and ruffled shirt, is evidently a Frenchman. He wears a white cap and an apron, a large knife is thrust under his belt. On the left a footman enters carrying in each hand a plate piled with muffins. Tea-things are on the table. Under the table a small dog, befouling the floor, is partly visible. Behind is a screen of several leaves, on the top of which is a bird, resembling a large dove."--British Museum online catalogue

The full length figure of Mr. Yates in the character of Launce from Two gentlemen of Verona stands center with his right hand holding the leash of his dog Crab while he points down to the dog with his left. Launce's shoes and hat lie on the ground in front and to the left while a tall staff stands in the ground to the right. Bushes and trees form the backdrop. "An etching comprising several allegorical and grotesque figures assembled on clouds or on smoke, before the gaping jaws of a monster, which, in the manner of medieval representations of the Mouth of Hell, emits flames. In front of this is a wolf in sheep's clothing, i.e., a fleece shaped like a clergyman's canonicals, and bearing on its head a church. The next figure is that of horned owl with spectacles, a satyr's leg and hoof, and a wooden leg; in one hand, or harpy's claw, this creature holds a balance, in which "honesty", inscribed on a deed(?) is outweighed by a bag of money, on which is marked '£100800'; in the other claw is a scroll, inscribed, "Mongri(or "a") Farca." A fox follows, offering a bag marked, "10,000". The head of a bishop in a mitre appears behind. In the middle of the design the Princess of Wales, as a sphinx-like she-goat, looks at the above-named figures, and is ridden by the Earl of Bute, as a he-goat, with a jack-boat, alluding to John Stuart, Earl of Bute, on one of his legs. A cerberus-like monster, or three centaurs, with zanies' trappings, and holding marrow-bones and cleavers which are beaten together, is followed by an old man who sounds a drum. A young gentlemen sits in a chair opposite three fashionable young ladies and their mother who are seated on a sofa. His wide grin suggests that he has amused himself with an anecdote, but the expressions on the ladies' faces indcate that he has failed to amuse them. Richard Orlebar (1671-1733) attended Trinity College, Oxford and was a member of the Middle Temple and a dedicated hunter. He married the heiress Diana Astry in 1708 and the couple built Hinwick Hall in Bedfordshire between 1709 and 1714. The physician looks at a pocket watch with a long chain; he also holds a walking stick in his right hand. The ill man is in the midst of putting together an elaborate dinner party. In addition to an inkstand with quill pens, on the table is a book, "Glasse's art of cookery" open to a recipe on how "to dress a turtle". On the table is an envelope addressed "To Ald. Guttle, London" and one to "Sr. A. Pepperpor" and a letter inviting the Alderman to dine. Another document contains the "bill of fare" which lists turtle soup, venison, chickens, hams, pheasents, etc. At his feet a dog scratches as a cat approaches. On the left a pretty, much young woman leans agains a chair as she watches the scene. In an elegantly furnished sitting room, a man sits at a table in a dressing gown and night cap, his tongue hanging out of his mouth and his gouty leg resting on a foot stool as his pulse is taken by a physician (right). The physician looks at a pocket watch with a long chain; he also holds a walking stick in his right hand. The ill man is in the midst of putting together an elaborate dinner party. In addition to an inkstand with quill pens, on the table is a book, "Glasse's art of cookery" open to a recipe on how "to dress a turtle". On the table is an envelope addressed "To Ald. Guttle, London" and one to "Sr. A. Pepperpor" and a letter inviting the Alderman to dine. Another document contains the "bill of fare" which lists turtle soup, venison, chickens, hams, pheasents, etc. At his feet a dog scratches as a cat approaches. On the left a pretty, much young woman leans agains a chair as she watches the scene. The room is decorated with a map of the West Indies over the elegant mantelpiece on which sit a statute of a goat and two candlesticks whose bases are obese figures sitting cross-legged. Five couples, finely dressed men and ladies at an outdoor luncheon party are stampeded by bees. Confusion is made worse by one man who falls backwards from a bench, which he tilts up, clutching the table-cloth and dragging over a bowl of punch. One of the ladies (left) has fainted and is being revived by a gentleman who pours a glass of water on her face. The dog on the right barks at the confusion

"John Bull, a fat "cit", is beset by descending water covered with the word 'Tax', many times repeated, in which dogs, cats, and pitchforks fall with violence. His eyes and spectacles are transfixed by a pitchfork inscribed 'Window Tax'; the shaft of another inscribed 'Malt & Hops Tax' sticks in his bleeding mouth, dislodging teeth. His paunch is pierced with a third fork; the handle, inscribed 'Tax ...' [&c. &c], supports an angry cat, spitting 'Tax ...' Another falling cat knocks off his wig, which emits a cloud of powder inscribed 'Powder Tax'. His gouty feet, in slashed shoes, are stabbed by three pitchforks: 'Corn Laws' [the biggest, cf. British Museum Satires No. 15510]; 'Leather Tax'; 'Land Tax'. A 'Dog Tax' strikes down J. B.'s dog, its collar inscribed 'Poor Tray'. Another dog worries a cat (left). J. A fat divine stumbles backward as dogs fight in the foreground. A seller at right is alarmed as he threatens to fall onto her table. "The College Gate": Three men ride off in different directions after coming through a gate with square brick pillars surmounted by stone vases. Behind the left rider walks a fat divine wearing an academic cap. "Two very tall and lank Englishmen walk arm-in-arm in profile to the left; one grasps a big (red) umbrella, and looks down at a dog. Before them walks a dwarfish man holding a tall cane, perhaps a servant, but dressed in the fashion of the day apart from striped trousers. Behind walks a second couple, shorter, broader, and more cheerful. All have flower-pot hats, and all double-breasted long-tailed coats, except one of the second pair, who wears top-boots.
