Abstract:
"Irishmen in volunteer uniform are mounted on galloping bulls; each faces the animal's tail. They hold shillelaghs, wear pouches inscribed 'Potatoes', and fling potatoes towards a small band of ragged sansculottes (right) from whom they are galloping away. These Frenchmen advance, firing muskets; the most prominent fires a cannon. The foremost volunteer, that is, the farthest from the enemy, shouts: "Stop! Stop! ye Scoundrils we shall Soon be after coming up wit ye." The second: "By Jasus if we follow them up at this rate we shall soon see the Tieves out of sight." The third: "Hubbubboo! how the Rogues run their's no overtaking them." The bulls are making for a chasm (left) into which one in the middle distance leaps. "Two sailors ride (left to right) bare-back on two galloping horses, one half a length behind. The horses are rough and clumsy, with blinkers and horse-collars. One sailor (left), whose hat flies off, shouts to the other: "Hollo' you Swab, lay too a bit, can't you: I've lost part of my upper rightigging, - and the Vessel's firing signal guns of distress. - have you lost your hearing." The other says: "If the lubber had not stood to it: they were both Ponies, I should have taken mine for a Cart Horse, - by the bumping in the Stern"."--British Museum online catalogue

"A sailor stands by the head of a saddled horse, looking knowingly at a smart ostler (left). The horse is clumsy and misshapen with shaggy fetlocks; it urinates against a stone wall (right). The ostler says, with a superior grin, "I tell you Master Bowling that is the same Horse you brought here." The sailor answers: "You tell me you Lubber! do you think I dont know better than that. I tell you I examined the works - and my vessel was not half so much bent in the bows and the Cabin lights were clearer - but what Grapples the whole is this. "Napoleon bestraddles the globe, seated at the Pole, about half of it being between his legs; countries are marked, but without regard to geography. A little figure looks from behind the globe (right) below the conqueror's left toe; his left hand is placed on 'Old England', and he raises a sabre menacingly. Napoleon, a fine figure, wearing an enormous cocked hat, a sabre in his right hand, looks down at the little man, his left arm extended; he says: "Ah, who is it dares interupt me in my Progress." The little fellow answers: "Why 'tis I little Johnny Bull Protecting a little spot I clap my hand on, and d-n. me if you come any Farther that's all." He is a 'cit' with an ill-fitting wig. "Two sailors face each other at a small table, on which is a centre-dish of pork bristling like a porcupine. Behind the table stands the hostess looking warily at one sailor (right); she says: "Never was better Pork believe me Gentlemen - I powdered it with my own Hands." He answers, scowling: "Did you so - then I'll tell you what Mistress, while your hand was in, I wish you had Shaved it also." The other (left), spiking a bristling chunk of meat on his knife, says: "Why Jack - may I never cast Anchor again, if there ant bristles in this Pork as thick as Cables." Beside him is a dog. Both sailors wear striped trousers with buckled shoes.
