"A sequel to BMSat 10540. George III, as a farmer in a smock, drives his pigs, now very plump, out of his farmyard and down a cliff into a turbulent sea. They have burst through a rotten paling; the foremost are struggling in huge waves, the last, the reluctant Sheridan, is propelled by the farmer's boot. The King says: "O you cursed ungrateful Grunters! - what, after devouring more in a twelve-month, than the good old Litter did in twelve years, you turn round to kick and bite your old Master! but if the Devil or the Pope has got possession of you all - pray get out of my Farm yard! - out with you all - no hangers behind! - you're all of a cursed bad-breed; so out with you altogether!!!" Behind him is the old sow in front of a thatched hovel, backed by trees. Among pigs who have already reached the sea is Howick, on his back on a billowing wave; beside him floats a paper: 'Repeal of the Test Act'. Behind him the head of Lord Holland looks up wistfully. Lord Grenville is carried downwards, one forefoot on a paper: 'Emancipation of the Catholic Army and Navy', while the (torn) 'Catholic Bill' floats before him. His body is covered with a distended skin of guineas, in reference to his two highly paid offices, see BMSat 10543, &c. Next, the hind-legs and vast rump of Lord Temple project from the water; beside him is a paper: 'Last Stake of the Broad Bottom Family', see BMSat 10721. Beside him is an almost submerged barrel of 'Whitbread's Entire' [see BMSat 10421], from which project the hind-legs of the drowning Whitbread. Next behind these, and about to plunge into the waves, are Lord St. Vincent, wearing a naval coat, Buckingham in spectacles and Garter ribbon, Bedford (Lord-Lieutenant of Ireland), from whose neck falls a ribbon inscribed 'Erin-Go-Bragh'. Just behind St. Vincent and Buckingham are Windham, Fitzpatrick (on his back), and Petty; next above these: the Duke of Norfolk, Erskine wearing his Chancellor's wig, Lauderdale, his body covered with tartan, and Spencer, with Moira close behind Bedford. The latest pigs to leave the ground are Ellenborough in his wig, Courtenay, Sidmouth, Derby, Carlisle, and Tierney; a little apart from the others Sheridan (cf. BMSat 10697), his body covered with Harlequin's chequered coat (cf. BMSat 9916), still has his hind-legs on the edge of the cliff. Portions of six other pigs appear in the mélée. "Napoleon and Talleyrand plant the genealogical tree of Lord Moira, inscribed 'Royal Pippin'. On the r. Grenville, Howick, and Buckingham ply their axes on the trunk of a huge oak-tree: 'The Royal-Oak'. In the background are rows of other 'Royal Pippins', just grafted on old stocks. Talleyrand digs the hole, placing his deformed foot on his spade. Napoleon, in profile to the right., is about to plant the pippin, whose root is a coroneted apple inscribed 'William the Norman Robber'; on its branches are other coroneted or crowned pippins. The main stem culminates in the whiskered face of Moira, wearing a royal crown. This is reached through a 'Plantagenet beheaded in 1415', and 'Henry de la Pole beheaded in 1538'. Collateral branches are 'Duchess of Clarence put to death in 1453', 'Hungerford Beheaded 1406', 'Crookback Richard killd at Bosworth', 'Edmund 4th Son of Henry 3d Beheaded', 'Countess Salisbury Beheaded in 1505.' Napoleon wears his large plumed bicorne, the peak on his neck, jack-boots, and a gardeners apron over his uniform. His long sabre is inscribed 'Corsican Grafting Knife.' Talleyrand wears a laced coat and cocked hat of the ancien régime, with bag-wig, sword, clerical bands, and rosary. From his pocket hangs a paper: 'Projet pour Agrandisser les Jardins Imperial'. In the foreground (l.) are three grafts ready to be joined to stocks; they lie against a basket labelled 'Grafts of King-Pippins for Brentford, Wimbleton, & Botley'. The centre and longest has the head of Cobbett, the others have the heads of Burdett and Horne Tooke. All wear royal crowns; Tooke has clerical bands. The 'Royal-Oak' (r.), an aged but still magnificent tree, whose trunk is gashed by the axes of the late Ministers, has a large royal crown in the centre of its branches, flanked by four giant acorns: 'Protestant Faith' (near a withered branch), 'Integrity of the Lords', 'Independence of the Commons', 'Liberty of the Press'. All the wood-cutters are in their shirt-sleeves. Grenville is back-to-back with Talleyrand; a cross dangling from a rosary hangs against his massive posterior, his waistcoat is striped in tricolour, his axe is a 'Catholic Cleaver'. Behind him the spectacled Buckingham raises a 'Broad-Bottom Hatchet' [see BMSat 10530]. Howick (r.), very thin and aggressive, plies a 'Whig Cleaver'. Funguses grow round the tree and on the lower part of the trunk. In the background is the Imperial nursery garden: rows of newly joined grafts the point of junction with the stock being an egg-shaped lump of 'Corsican Clay'. Crowned heads sprout from green leaves; they are (l. to r.): 'Eutrurian [sic] Pippin', 'Wirtemburg Pippin' [the face that of a plump woman, nd probably intended for the Queen, see BMSat 10440], 'Saxon Pippin', 'Holland Pippin', 'Itaian [sic] Pippin'. "The procession has advanced to the door of a church (r.) which a parson closes, dropping his prayer-book, open at the 'Burial Service'. Only his arms and robe are visible; he says: " - no Burial here, for Broad-Bottom: - he died a Roman; - besides, - 'tis a felo-de-se case; - take him to the next 4 cross-roads; & the Family has a large Stake always ready!" Only the acolyte at the head of the procession has realized this check: little Lord Henry Petty drops his bell and candle and capers in dismay. The three pall-bearers (a fourth is hidden behind the coffin) are (l. to r.) Sidmouth, Lord St. Vincent, and Windham. All wear mourning hats, scarves, and cloaks, and clutch handkerchiefs, weeping large tears. Below the coffin are seen the robes and bare sandalled feet of monks. On the top of the coffin is Grenville, face downwards, and showing the back of his wig, and a dome- shaped hump denoting his famous 'broad-bottom' (see BMSat 10530). At the four corners are ostrich plumes. On a placard on the side of the pall: 'Gul: Baro: de Broad-Bottom Obiit die Martis 24° A: D. 1807'. Behind the coffin walks the Pope, in his tiara and robes, weeping and supported between the Marquis of Buckingham and his son Lord Temple. Both weep with gestures of extravagant grief; both are dressed as priests. Behind, thin and ascetic, is Howick, a barefooted monk, holding up the Pope's long robes. Behind walk arm-in-arm, both shambling and dissipated, Sheridan clutching a bottle of 'Brandy' and General Fitzpatrick, from whose pocket hangs a paper: 'Tears of Hedge Lane' [a squalid resort of prostitutes in Westminster]. "Burdett in armour stands with legs astride, sword raised, left fist clenched, making an onslaught on a book which is on the ground, its pages slashed and tattered. On these are fragments of inscriptions: 'Red Book for the . . .'; 'Treasury'; 'Pensions' [twice]; 'Pensions 4000, 3000, 2.400'; 'Teller o the Ex[chequer] . . . 6000 4.000'; 'Sinecu[res]'. He declaims: "I will not stop, - till I have cut out the accursed leaves of the Red Book!!!" His sword-blade is 'Took's Improved Steel'. On the right Tooke peers at him, holding aside a curtain; he says: "Come Come my pupil goes on better than I expected - very indeed for a beginning yes - yes - he'll do after a little practice" [see British Museum Satires No. 10731, &c.]. He holds a book: 'Diversions of Purley' [see (e.g.) British Museum Satires No. 9020]. On the left John Bull, dressed as Sancho Panza with a short tunic and ruff, gapes at his master, his hands on his knees. He says: "What the deuce is he at now! he will certainly get himself into some scrape or other." "Lord Temple, naked, wtth large feathered wings bound to his upraised arms, attempts to fly after his father, Buckingham, who is soaring upwards. But his wings are disintegrating; feathers, which are quill pens, fall from them, and he is about to descend heavily on to a viciously pointed stake which is planted in the cobbles of the roadway. His wings are splashed with red, i.e. with sealing-wax. The stake is inscribed 'Stake out of Public-Hedge!' Buckingham (as Daedalus), whom distance makes much smaller than his bulky nephew, is borne up on intact, outspread wings inscribed 'Tellership of \ the Exchequer'. His naked posteriors are grotesquely large. Both are lit by broad slanting beams from a sun in the upper right. corner of the design containing the heal of George III looking down with surprised severity at Temple. On the opposite side of the wide roadway is a handsome detached house, representing the Paymaster's house in Whitehall. A negro servant in livery stands at the door handing up a package to a man in a cart inscribed 'Stationary Office', which is piled with similar packages and bundles of pens. "The design is surrounded on the upper and side margins by a festooned curtain; from this, in the upper corners, smiling heads look out supporting a chain of prints, small copies of plates in the volume, overlapping one another. These form a border to the central figure, who stands, like a showman, addressing the spectator, arms extended, opera-hat in his right. hand. He resembles the man who stands chapeau-bras in British Museum satire No. 10889. Behind him (left and right) stand six grinning figures, men and women, who listen to him. All seven are grotesque figures with large heads, typical of Woodward's 'Lilliputians' (cf. Museum Satire No. 9635). He says (the words etched above his head across the centre of the design): "Ladies and Gentlemen having compleated the first volume of the Caricature Magazine I am desired in the names of the Proprietors. Abstract:
"The design is surrounded on the upper and side margins by a festooned curtain; from this, in the upper corners, smiling heads look out supporting a chain of prints, small copies of plates in the volume, overlapping one another. These form a border to the central figure, who stands, like a showman, addressing the spectator, arms extended, opera-hat in his right. hand. He resembles the man who stands chapeau-bras in British Museum satire No. 10889. Behind him (left and right) stand six grinning figures, men and women, who listen to him. All seven are grotesque figures with large heads, typical of Woodward's 'Lilliputians' (cf. Museum Satire No. 9635). He says (the words etched above his head across the centre of the design): "Ladies and Gentlemen having compleated the first volume of the Caricature Magazine I am desired in the names of the Proprietors. Publisher Artists &c. as also from myself and large-long [see British Museum Satire No. 10604, &c], and small headed Bretheren to return you our sincere thanks for the kind reception we have experienced, in this the commencement of our exertions, and at the same time to assure you that neither pains nor expence shall be spared to merit your future patronage, you are requested to be as early as possible in giving your orders for the first number of the second volume, for the present Ladies and Gentlemen we most respectfully take our Leave." At the base of the design, flanking a tablet on which the title is etched in small letters are (left) ink-stand, book: 'Sketches from Nature', and a rolled print or drawing. "A crowd struggles from the open hall-door (left) to the staircase (right) of a 'cit's' mansion. A servant out of livery stands on the stairs shouting: "Ladies, and Gentlemen--you need not crowd so--my Mistress says all the rooms are full above stairs--and have been so this half hour --you may possibly find standing room in the Breakfast Parlour and that is all". At the open door is an arm holding a flambeaux and a section of a coach. A footman shouts "Lady Bun. Bullers Carriage stops the way!!" A man holds up on his cane a wig simulating natural hair ornamented with feathers, &c., shouting, "Any Lady lost a wig". A fat bald woman near the stairs shouts back: "Here, Here, I own the Wig!" A very fat 'cit' mops his face, holding his hat and wig; he says: "I have lost your Mother in the Mob. but I dorse to say--she'll take care of herself oh Bet! Bet! I wish I was back again in Cateaton Street this d--d stiff collar makes [sic]". A diminutive girl hanging on his arm says: "Dear Papa dont be so vulgar we shall get in time". A very fat woman in front drinks from a bottle, saying, "I have lost Mr Dowlass but here is my comfort". Between the pair, a fashionably dressed man, holding a large opera-hat, shouts: "Open the Ventilators". A woman says: "What a delightful squeeze". Abstract:
"The ... inscription, but not the signatures, is on a conventional curtain symmetrically arranged across the design, centred by a laughing mask of John Bull type. The design is flanked by a woman (left) and a man (right) seated and laughing, both ugly and elderly, both holding a print in which their heads and shoulders are reflected as if in a mirror. The curtain drops on each side of the central mask to disclose caricature heads, closely grouped, as if in the gallery of a theatre. Those on the left are directed to the right, those on the right to the left; a few are women. Most are amused, some scowl, one sleeps, one yawns. On the lower edge of the design, below the feet of the couple holding the prints, are burlesque 'Lilliputian' figures, characteristic of Woodward, see British Museum Satires no. 9635, &c. They diminish in scale from right and left towards the centre, where the curtain touches the base of the design. The two exterior figures (right and left) are zanies or pierrots. "George III, standing in front of the throne, extends his right. hand to Portland, who stoops to kiss it, proffering a 'List of the New Ministry Duk ...'. The King looks angrily over his left. shoulder at the old Ministry who are in flight, derisively raising the skirt of his coat. Two labels float from his mouth: 'Approach my Lords & Gentlemen & Kiss my Hand -' and, 'as for You my Lords & Gentlemen you may Kiss - '. Grenville scurries es off stooping, his peer's mantle looped over his arm, leaving coat-tails and posteriors exposed; he says: "This comes of getting into bad Company." Howick, as he hurries off with his Catholic Bill, looks behind him at the King, saying, "I thought we should have cramed it down his throat." Moira, in uniform, stares in consternation. Petty and Erskine, both in their robes, escape together, much alarmed. Behind them, Sheridan slinks off, dressed as Harlequin, see BMSat 9916. The others are Sidmouth, in profile to the left., as is Temple on the extreme right.; between them is the spectacled face of Buckingham, saying, "Aye Aye the Doctor [cf. BMSat 9849] advised him not to swallow it." These fugitives are adapted from BMSat 10709. On the left., behind Portland, (?) Hawkesbury stoops, his lips pursed as if ready to kiss. The King looks angrily over his left. shoulder at the old Ministry who are in flight, derisively raising the skirt of his coat. Two labels float from his mouth: 'Approach my Lords & Gentlemen & Kiss my Hand -' and, 'as for You my Lords & Gentlemen you may Kiss - '. Grenville scurries es off stooping, his peer's mantle looped over his arm, leaving coat-tails and posteriors exposed; he says: "This comes of getting into bad Company." Howick, as he hurries off with his Catholic Bill, looks behind him at the King, saying, "I thought we should have cramed it down his throat." Moira, in uniform, stares in consternation. Petty and Erskine, both in their robes, escape together, much alarmed. Behind them, Sheridan slinks off, dressed as Harlequin, see BMSat 9916. The others are Sidmouth, in profile to the left., as is Temple on the extreme right.; between them is the spectacled face of Buckingham, saying, "Aye Aye the Doctor [cf. BMSat 9849] advised him not to swallow it." These fugitives are adapted from BMSat 10709. On the left., behind Portland, (?) Hawkesbury stoops, his lips pursed as if ready to kiss. Behind him is Castlereagh, then Perceval in a barrister's wig. A fifth profile appears on the extreme left. Beside the King is a stool on which are a large book (the Bible, as in BMSat 10709), sceptre, and a document, 'Coronation Oath', on which stands the crown. Abstract:
"Fox flees in terror through the doorway of the House of Commons, taking an enormous stride. Beside him runs a thin demoniac greyhound, Grey, wearing a collar: 'Opposition Grey-Hound'. A small animal runs behind with the head of M. A. Taylor. Through the doorway are seen half the Speaker's chair and the Opposition benches, while the hands of Pitt, who is speaking, project from the left, holding two scrolls: 'O'Conner's list of Secret Traitors' and 'Destruction of Buonaparte - Capture of the French Navy - End of the Irish Rebellion - Voluntary Associations - Europe Arming - Britannia Ruling the Waves'. His words float towards the dismayed Opposition: 'Read o'er This! - And after this! - And then to Breakfast, with what appetite you may!!!' The Opposition are furtively eating papers: Sheridan eats 'Loyalty of the Irish Nation'; Tierney, 'Homage to the French Con[? stitution]'. Between them is squeezed the hat of C. Fox, indicating that between them they have left little room for their leader. Erskine, the egotist [see BMSat 9246, &c], eats 'my own Loyalty'; Shuckburgh, 'French lib[erty]'; Nicholls, 'a Letter to W Pitt'; Burdett, 'Egalité'; an unidentified member eats 'Peace or Ruin'. All wear hats except Burdett and Erskine. The House is lit by candles burnt to the socket, suggesting an all-night sitting. After the title: '"------courageous Chief!) "The first in Flight!" { N.B.
