Abstract:
In a tavern diners eat eagerly as they sit crowded around tables each covered in white linen and divided from each other by curtains. A waiter delivers a covered tureen to the table on the right as he crosses pathes with the waitress hurrying to the left with two tankards of beer. The diners' hats hang on pegs around the walls. A chandelier hangs before three casement windows with oval mirrors decorating the walls between. The tavern has been identified as either the Rainbow Tavern or the Wheatsheaf Eating House, both on Fleet Street

"A copy by Rowlandson after the 1774 Bunbury print, 'The hopes of the family - an admission at the university', a satire on a socially aspirational family: a youth is being examined by a tutor for admission to Cambridge university; the tutor, in academic robes, is seated at a table pointing at a large volume resting beside a globe; the youth stands counting on his fingers while his eager father, wearing countryman's boots, urges him on; on the left a woman, probably the tutor's housekeeper, holds two further volumes, and on the right an elegant undergraduate stands smiling; on the wall behind are portraits of "Dr Allcock" and a woman, a Roman bust with turned down mouth on the lintel above the door, and a frame with the plan and elevation of a building."

Abstract:
"A complicated piece of machinery fills the centre of a room in a fashionable establishment; an open door (right) leads into a shop where, in the background, a pretty and extravagantly dressed woman (in the costume of c. 1828) presides at a counter; above the door is a model of the machine, 'Patent Shavograph!!!' Through a window (left) is seen the 'Ladies Hair Cutting Room': another machine operates on seated ladies, whose long hair is raised perpendicularly into the mechanism. Above the window is an erection of erect loops of hair, burlesquing the fashion. A dandy, waiting his turn, ogles the ladies through his monocle. Another, sitting on a chair (left), reads a newspaper, 'Herald'. The 'Shavograph' operates from right to left upon the customers who sit on a circular bench, each with his head held firm in a wedge cut from a millstone-like disk (B) at the back of his seat. The razor has just sliced off the nose of an officer who stands gesticulating wildly, putting his hand before splashing blood while one dismayed neighbour rises from his seat, and the other shouts 'Stop! Stop!' Four men on the left, waiting their turn for the razor, &c, to reach them, are unconscious of the accident. One is having his head pressed into position by a rod held by a fashionably dressed man (H) who is also working a lever. Below the design, in the border of the print: 'EXPLANATION. AAA a circular form on which the shavees sit. BBBBBB wheels that govern the position of the head. CC [cog-wheels] the machinery which moves the brush in every required direction. D a resevior [sic] of water [above the brush], boiling hot E a pipe [connecting F and D] filld with patent double compress'd shaving powder, through which the water is forced to forme a lather in the brush F. GGG [cog-wheels] the machinery which moves the razor H the Engineer with his directing rod. (Note) it is indispensible that the sitter should be firm & steady, it will be percived [sic] the neglecting this by looking after the Shop woman has cost one his nose, but he only pays the penalty of his own imprudence. "Accidents will occur in the best regulated families.' "Codrington, wearing the star of the Bath, sits on a gun-carriage on the deck of his ship, looking sternly up at an old scarred and pigtailed sailor who addresses him with an expression of consternation: Please your Honor's Glory there's something wrong in the wind, for they've clapt a Marine at the Helme of Old England, and He and the other lob lollies have made Sombody (God bless Him) to call our Glorious Victory an UNTOWARD EVENT And when they where told to belay their jawing tackel they shifted the wind and began to blow another way. Codrington answers Aye Aye Jack they or we must be fools. In his right hand is his sword, the point resting on the deck, the blade inscribed with Nelson's Trafalgar signal: England expects every Man to do his duty. He holds a document: Treaty of London. His back is to the sea where a rocky promontory (right) forms Wellington's profile, looking towards Codrington, a row of tiny gun-emplacements forming a grim smile (cf. Abstract:
A satire on Wellington's dismissal of the Duke of Clarence. A pyramid built of large stones stands in a open field. At the apex is inscribed the word "King" at the base left "Lords" and right "Commons". Kneeling on either side in his robes is a peer facing a simply dressed M.P. Between them on the ground are the heads of a unicorn and a lion which is being gnawed by a crow and a rat. Wellington in full uniform straddles the two men who support him. Between his legs a plaque on the pyramid reads: "Multum in parvo, or the British Constitution formerly consisting of the three estates, King, Lords, Commons, abridged into an elegant extract in one volume!"

Abstract:
"A giant File (for filing papers by spiking them), a rod with a round base and terminating in a hook, bisects the design vertically. To the hook is padlocked a handsome country seat, surrounded by trees, lawn, flower-bed, deer, and peacock. At the base is the same house in ruins. In each corner of the design is a pair of figures: the lawyer and his client at different stages of the suit. Spiked on the file, and filling the centre of the design, is a long procession, extending over two concentric ovals and enclosing the final scene, the exterior of a debtors' prison; it begins with a Full Purse and ends with a limp Empty Purse. The corner designs: [1] an obsequious attorney bows to a stout and jovial sportsman, saying, Oh Yes, a Chancery Suit will soon put you in possession of that fine Estate. [2] The Defendant, dandified and slim, nonchalantly empties a purse into an attorney's hat, saying, There take that, and file a bill immediately. [3] Older and ragged, the Plaintiff stands back to back with an obese barrister who scans an enormous bill of Costs, much of which lies coiled on the ground. Below: How blest was I, before I went To Law I fear'd no Writs, I felt no Bailifs Claw. (lines quoted also in British Museum Satires No. 1609, see British Museum Satires No. 3047) [4] The Defendant, almost more ragged and dejected, stands with hands thrust in empty pockets, while a paunchy barrister marches off in triumph. Below: Now happy man, can'st triumph in thy Woes? For tho' thou'st got the Day, thou'st lost thy Clothes. (lines adapted from No. 3048 (1749) The centre procession of little figures, everyone carrying a purse, is headed by the Sergeant at Arms capering along, the mace on his shoulder, followed by the L--d--C--ll--r, and his train-bearer. Next, the Master of the Rolls and three Clerks, all carrying bulky packages of Orders and Decrees. Next, walking in pairs, come 12 Masters in Chancery [there were actually ten], in wig and gown, holding papers inscribed Affidavit, Recognizance, Orders, and Deeds; they carry between them one vast elongated purse. Six dandified Clerks follow, each with a pen behind his ear. Next, The Clerk of the Crown and Deputy, the first a barrister, the second carrying Decrees spiked on a rod, and followed by another barrister, the Registar [sic], and by another batch of (six) Clerks. After these walk The Six Clerks, in wig and gown, holding papers: Procedure on Bill, Pardon, Commission Bankrupt[cy]. A rather raffish crowd of 60 Assistants follows, their hands greedily extended, despite their fat purses. 24 Cursitors in wig and gown take up more space in the procession than the preceding '60'; they are headed by one of their number holding large Writs. Six individuals follow: Clerk of the Hamper, dragging two big Leather Bags; Comptroller of the Hamper; Clerk of the Patents with a Charter; Master of the Suppoena Office--; Clerk of the Affidavits. Eight Clerks of the Petty Bags follow, and are followed by two Examiners (barristers). Next are the Clerk of the Rolls, a barrister, burdened with Deeds, and the Usher of the Court holding a wand. Two Tipstaves follow; then comes the Warden of the Fleet, and last of all two burly Turnkeys, and a long Empty Purse. This procession marches along a path coiled in two concentric ovals, like a lengthy legal document, some of the figures being upside down; it encloses the centre design, so that its tail points to the door of the Fleet Prison. From a barred window placarded Poor Debtors a victim looks out; he is given alms by a dustman and an apple by an old apple-woman.
