"Eight designs in two rows, each with lines parodying 'the House that Jack built' etched above each. Some section of the bridge appears in Nos. 1-5. [1] Tiny French soldiers gallop across the bridge; a man punts in the rapidly flowing river. Behind is Leipzig, a walled town backed by hills. Above: "This is the Bridge that was blown into air." [2] Three men, wearing helmets and aprons, excavate a pit beside the bridge, from which a man looks down: "These are the Miners that had the care / Of mining the Bridge . . . [&c.]." [3] A Grenadier corporal holds a long match towards the covered pit; three tiny Grenadiers run across the bridge: "This is the Corporal, stout and strong, / Who fired the Mine with his match so long, / Which was made by the Miners . . . [&c.]." [4] A swaggering officer points at the ground, looking over his shoulder at the corporal, who runs forward with his match, saluting obsequiously: "This is the Colonel of Infantry, Who ordered the Corporal . . . [&c.]." [5] The colonel listens deferentially to an officer who whispers in his ear, pointing downwards: "This is the Marshal of high degree / Who whispered the Colonel.. .[&c.]." [6] Napoleon gallops from the battlefield, indicated by a drum in the foreground and bodies in the background: "This is the Emperor who scampered away, / And left the Marshal . . . [&c.]." [7] Refugees, including women with infants and an old farmer, make gestures of despair. Behind is the blazing town which more fugitives are leaving: "These are the Thousands who cursed the day, / Which made him Emperor ... [&c.]." [8] Four allied sovereigns in a tent consult over a map held between them. Alexander (left) sits on a camp-stool, the others stoop over the map: the King of Prussia is in back view, facing the Emperor of Austria. Fourth page of a monthly magazine that consisted of four pages; included on this page are five individually-titled images, "MADRID, - A FALSE ALARM (British Museum Satires No. 17269): Ferdinand VII lies on his back in bed, his crown and a huge pot of 'Holy Water' beside him. He calls 'Quick! fetch the Holy Petticoat I once embroidered. St. Peter will sure admit me in that disguise'. Behind his bed-curtains a procession hurries forward, headed by a friar holding two huge candles. An acolyte swinging a censer walks before a bishop in his robes who holds up an embroidered petticoat hanging from a cross. Behind is another bishop. (Ferdinand VII's death was expected and had been reported. He recovered and died on 29 Sept. 1833. For the petticoat, reputedly embroidered for the Virgin during his internment at Valençay, see British Museum satires no. 12508, &c.)."--British Museum online catalogue, "DIETING IN GERMANY. (British Museum satires no. 17270) 'Liberty' is represented by the flames coming from big candle-ends placed on the ground; Francis I and Nicholas (out of place in the German Diet) are putting huge extinguishers over them. Five of the candles are 'Franckfort, Hesse-Cassel, Brandenburg, Hanover, Baden'. The Tsar: 'Extinguish it in one place it blazes in another'. He is back to back with the senile Francis who puts his extinguisher over 'Brandenburg', saying, 'Why the extinguisher itself appears to be igniting'. (See British Museum satires no. 17212, &c. Revolutionary movements in Europe, cf. No. 16535, had in fact been suppressed or had subsided. For the extinguisher cf. On the plain below and between them scattered forces are fighting. The child, who has dropped her coral and bells, holds out her arms, screaming 'Ah you've got my crown! I will have my crown'. The ape, who presses a foot on human bones, grimaces savagely. Below each protagonist is a supporter. A man waving a cocked hat shouts 'Fight for your illustrious Queen'. A monk holds up both arms, shouting 'Fight for your August King!!' Below the title: '"Oh its a mighty pretty Quarrel" (Sir Lucius O'Trigger)' [Sheridan, The Rivals]. (British Museum satires no. 17273) 'The Times' newspaper is represented by a man whose body from neck to hips is covered by a sheet of 'The Times'; across the columns of the paper are the words: 'Horrible! \ Dreadful!! \ Frightful!! \ Mare's Nest \ discovered near \ Hammersmith'. The square head, with fierce angular features and a pen stuck in it, is seemingly an ink-pot. The limbs are those of a vigorous man, who lunges fiercely with outstretched arms, holding a huge ink-ball in each hand. With one he knocks backward and blackens the face of an elderly man dressed like the Duke of Cumberland who watches from the left. 'The Times': 'I should not have known how to make any thing of the Duke's apology; because a short-sighted man might ride nearer than he intended, and seeing people so much more frightened than hurt, might possibly smile:--But you I have at my mercy. Where's the mustachoes Sir? Where's the mustachoes?--There, Sir-- there, have you any mind for another dose'. Cumberland, stooping aggressively, exclaims: 'Oh! you officious blockhead, you will get freely belaboured for your pains'. A young lady, who watches mincingly from the right, cries, 'Oh! "Napoleon is being drummed out of France. His right wrist is tied to the left wrist of Joseph Bonaparte; they are led forward, abjectly crouching, by Blücher, who holds the rope attached to the noose round Napoleon's neck. Napoleon has long ass's ears and wears a fool's cap inscribed 'Transported for Life'; his brother's cocked hat is inscribed 'Coward and Thief'. Both are assailed by serpentine monsters, barbed and scaly, which bite their legs, one inscribed 'Execration', the other 'Detestation'. Both wear uniform with the coats without epaulets and cut off at the waist. Blücher carries against his shoulder a long pole on which is a placard: 'Napolean, Late Emperor of the French, King of Italy Protecter of the Confederation of the Rhine, Grand Arbiter of the fate of Nations &c &c &c but now by the permission of the Allied Sovereigns, Exile in the Isle of Elba an Outcast from Society a fugitive a Vagabond. Yet this is the conceited Mortal who said, I have never been seduced by prosperity Adversity will not be able to overcome me--' Behind (left) the sovereigns of Europe gleefully dance in a ring, holding hands, round two flag-staffs from which float two large flags, the Bourbon flag dotted with fleur-de-lis and inscribed 'Rejoice O ye Kings Vive le Roi'; on the other is a flag with the double-headed eagle of Austria or Russia. The monarchs wear crowns; with them is the Pope, wearing his tiara. Next him is the corpulent Louis XVIII, one arm round the Pope's shoulder. Of the others only William of Holland can be identified with certainty; he wears bulky Dutch breeches with an ermine cloak. There are five others, three must be the Tsar, Emperor of Austria, King of Prussia. The others are probably Ferdinand of Spain and Ferdinand of Sicily. They sing: 'Now we are met a Jolly set in spite of Wind or Weather'. Abstract:
"Louis XVIII, grotesquely obese (left), and the Tsar kiss, their lips touching. Louis, whose head is much the larger, grasps the back of Alexander's head; the Tsar bends from the waist to reach beyond the King's paunch. Louis, with the gouty legs and old-fashioned gold-embroidered coat and waistcoat of English caricature, wears the order of the Saint Esprit. The Tsar, in uniform, has the high pinched waist and bulging breast of the dandy (cf. British Museum Satires No. 13029) with enormous cavalry boots to the thigh, huge epaulets, and a sash, but no sword. He says: "My Dear Legitimate Brother (tho I believe I call Boney the same) I am happy to serve you tho your cursed Country Men almost destroyed my country--" Louis answers: "Ma Chere [sic] Ami, I am so rejoiced at your Brotherly Kindness in putting off our payment & takeing off your Troops that I could Devour you." The embrace is watched by two Frenchmen on the left, and on the right by the King of Prussia, the Emperor of Austria, and a young man (? Napoleon's son). Frederick William wears dandified uniform like that of the Tsar but with long trousers; he supports a large sword hanging from a belt, and holds a huge cocked hat; he watches the embrace with distaste, saying, "I am obliged to follow the Leaders at Present." Francis I says: "I must agree for the moment but I have a Grandson." One Frenchman wears uniform with top-boots; he says: "De Legitimate francais be too much for John Bull de manoeuvre by Gar ve want de Time & we show dem vat ve intend." His companion, an elderly man wearing a court suit with a powdered wig (Richelieu attended the Conference on behalf of France) says delightedly: "Ah-ha he do him vid Compliments & den we do them out of the Money." Abstract:
"European sovereigns (wearing crowns) and others, watch a game of billiards between the Tsar, the principal figure, and the Sultan. Nicholas (left), a dandy in uniform, is about to make a stroke which will inevitably pocket the Turkish ball; in the pocket beside him is a ball inscribed 'Greece'. He registers complacent satisfaction. The Turk (right), in ornate Turkish dress and jewelled turban with two aigrettes, stamps furiously, tearing his long white beard. Greece (or the pro-Russian President of the Republic, Capodistrias) stands behind Nicholas on the extreme left, gloomily smoking a long pipe. He wears elaborate national costume, and a cone-shaped cap from which project two long ass's ears; this is surmounted by a chain and padlock and inscribed 'Cap of Liberty presented by Russia'. Charles X bends excitedly towards him, both hands raised; he says: 'By Gar he has pocket your Ball--dat is no good for you.' On the wall a framed map of the globe serves as marking board; the east, north, and west sides are respectively: 'Greece', 'Turkey', and 'India', the last being 'Game'. The pointer is a bayoneted musket. Francis I is marking, his finger on the pointer which has just passed "Turkey" on its way to "India"; he looks down at the table, saying, 'I may as well mark Game.' Frederick William III puts his hand on his shoulder, saying, 'I say Brother Marker, you and I must go snacks.' Seated under this map is Francis I of the Two Sicilies, his arms folded; he holds his crown which is 'Wrapped up--to preserve the NAP'. Between the map and Charles X stands an American, presumably President Jackson, a tall man in civilian dress with a jauntily worn high-crowned hat. He says: 'Pretty considerable--that is I guess how the game will be' [see British Museum Satires No. 14714]. Between the King of Prussia and the Sultan stands Ferdinand VII, as the "Spanish Mule" of British Museum Satires No. 12508, &c., an ass's head, with blinkers and a muzzle, and long ears projecting through his crown. He wears ruff, slashed doublet, &c, and reads a paper: 'Map of Sou[th] Amer[ica]'. In the foreground Wellington (right) sits in a small chair, in profile to the left, his eyes looking apprehensively behind him, his mouth pursed. He wears blue coat and white trousers and holds a cue, the butt resting on the ground; under his chair lies a British bull-dog, gazing up with melancholy intentness. The Duke's shadow forms the silhouette of a soldier standing with folded arms. In the middle distance are notabilities, less directly concerned. The Duke of Brunswick in the uniform of a Death's Head Hussar, with a conical fool's cap with bells poised above his crown, says, 'I'll see Hanover d--n before I ask his pardon.' O'Connell, with a big bag of 'Rent' under his arm (see British Museum Satires No. 14766, &c), says to the Pope, holding out a ticket inscribed 'MP, By der powers father I won two games' [his two returns for Clare, see British Museum Satires Nos. 15538, 15847]. On the extreme right Dom Miguel, wearing the Order of the Tower and Sword, clutches his crown, saying, 'I must hold tight now--my little Wife that was to be--is gone home.'"--British Museum online catalogue

"John Bull, blindfolded, is being robbed and bullied by the powers of Europe who are urged on by Pitt. He stands in back view, without his coat, leaning forward with outstretched arms, wearing the wrinkled gaiters by which Gillray denotes the countryman (cf. BMSat 8141, &c). The Emperor (left), wearing a crown and a long ermine-lined robe decorated with a Habsburg eagle, leans forward from the left, and furtively picks his pocket. He holds a document inscribed 'Imperial Loan'. Prussia, as a Death's Head hussar, stands full-face near the Emperor and snaps his fingers at John Bull, holding out in triumph a money-bag inscribed '£2000000'. On the right John is assailed by France and Holland: a lean and ragged sansculotte with clenched fists kicks him behind; a fat Dutchman, holding a tobacco-pipe, puffs a blast of smoke in his face. "John Bull sits in a double pair of stocks, his ankles heavily shackled. His wrists are linked by a huge padlock inscribed Million £800 000 000 [National Debt]. He sits on bales of Taxes; to his back is tied a huge bundle of Last Wars Taxes. His clothes are tattered; three pockets hang inside out, inscribed To Let. At his side (left), and in profile to the right, kneels a noble Spaniard, in very theatrical dress, with trunk hose, cloak, and ruff. He has a spear from which hangs a pennant inscribed Libertas. He puts his hands together in a gesture of prayer: I come once again, and on my kneens [sic] to implore your Aid, we are indeed grateful for former Services, and beleive that you fought purely for Spain and not for yourselves--Save us from our pretended Friends they are worse then Enemies--Save us, and the World, from the destruction of Liberty--. John bites his thumbs despairingly; he answers: I pity you, but I can only give you advice, when you came to me before, I was a Strong Man, and free, but I am now exhausted in saving you, and destroying your great Enemy--See how I am fetter'd--! My Creditors enchain me--! look at my Debt and pity me!-- At his feet a heavy pair of leg-irons lies across many papers inscribed Debt and Taxes. He sits under an oak-tree; from a partly-withered bough hang his cartouche-box and bayonet-belt. In the middle distance (right) Louis XVIII sits astride a cannon (cf. British Museum Satires No. 12797), on a gun-carriage drawn rapidly up a slope by the Tsar and the Emperor of Austria. Both wear uniform and crowns, that of the latter topped by a fool's cap. Both cry: War! War!! War! and blood!! Alexander holds a sword in one hand, a bayoneted musket in the other; Francis holds a sword and a pistol, against his shoulder is the shaft of a flag inscribed Holy Alliance. Louis XVIII leans back, flannelled legs extended, two pistols in his belt, a sword in one hand, a musket in the other. Before him on the cannon is a bowl of soup, &c. The Pope walks at his right, holding a string attached to his nose. The King: By the Powers I shall fall, and lose my Balance Stop!! Stop! I say don't pull so hard you'll rupture [your scored through] Eu rope, this is not suited to my Taste [scored through] Gout I am already crippled and cannot bear it Stop!!!-- The Pope, who wears his tiara and holds his crosier against his shoulder, answers: Fear not, I'll let you into Heaven, through the back door my dear Son. Keys hang from his neck. Behind the cannon runs the Devil pushing at the King's posterior with a trident; he says: They cannot go on without me so I bring up the rear!! Beside the cannon run tiny frogs in uniform with muskets, &c. A slightly bigger one holding a sword may represent Angoulême. "A huge bull, snorting fire, rushes with lowered head towards a French fort (left) from which cannon-balls descend upon him. Beneath the fort sansculottes on one knee fire at the bull while standing French soldiers, correctly dressed, also fire. On the fortress stand Frenchmen, firing and waving their hats; they shout: "Vive la republic, Blood & plunder, no Quarter to John Bull!" A huge tricolour flag has a staff surmounted by a skull. To the bull's back is strapped a bundle inscribed 'Debt Debt'. One horn has been shot off and lies on the ground. To his left hind leg is chained a heavy weight inscribed 'Subsidies'. Nevertheless, he cries: "Now my brave Allies let us all stand firm together & make a bold push, & I'll be Answerable for the Event." But behind him (right) his allies have all turned their backs and are departing in directions indicated by signposts. A fat Dutchman smoking a pipe goes 'To Amsterdam', saying, "I care not who beats, I'll join the Strongest Party". Frederick William II (father-in-law of the Duke of York) walks off 'To Berlin', saying, "I've fingerd the Cash from both Sides, & will now employ it to Secure the Partition of Poland"; "Negociate with Robertspierre privately & then - Damn Relationship!!!" Next, a Spanish don, Charles IV, goes 'To Madrid', saying, "Whats the Bourbon Family to me when they Impede my Interest. Hush!! I am now treating for a Separate peace with that Blackguard Roberspere to Secure my own Crown - I must enlarge the Powers of the Inquisition". On the extreme right Francis II and Mack in a two-wheeled gig, on which is the Habsburg eagle, are driving off 'To Vienna'. The Emperor says: "Well Mack we have made a Glorious Campaign of it; of what use are the Low Countries without they continue to fill my Coffers? Abstract:
The sudden entrance, through the window, of Napoleon Bonaparte startles tailors assembled in their shop, i.e., the European rulers at the Congress of Vienna, busy "cutting out" portions of Europe for themselves. With a blood-dripping sabre in his hand, Bonaparte declares his readiness to join them in this activity. To his left, a startled King of Holland moves toward the Austrian Emperor, shown with a pair of small scissors and an iron in his hands, who is Napoleon's father-in-law and whom the deposed French Emperor asks, "Where is my wife and son, father Francis?" Beside Francis I, the Russian Emperor stands on a large piece of cloth lined with "Polish fur," raising in his left hand a knot made out of the measuring tape. On the opposite side of the workbench, a fierce-looking Prussian general Blücher threatens Napoleon with huge shears. Behind him, the King of Prussia, sitting cross-legged, continues sewing a piece of cloth signed, "Pattern of an Emperors Robe." To his right stands Napoleon's former marshal, Bernadotte, now allied against him as the Crown Prince of Sweden. In the middle of the room, a frightened and helpless-looking King of France lies flat on the floor, consoled by John Bull, with a large club, who promises to sew up "that rascal Boney." Behind John Bull, a terrified Pope scrambles away for the safety, his tiara and cross fallen to the ground. On the other side of Louis XVIII, the French negotiator at the Congress, Talleyrand, attempts to hide under the tailors' bench

Abstract:
Vansittart and Castlereagh, as surgeons, bleeding coins from the arms of John Bull. The coins are collected by Prince Leopold, Princess Charlotte, a tiny McMahon, a Chinese mandarin, and the gouty Regent. Brougham, stands on the left, pointing finger at John Bull, saying, "Retrench! Johnny, Retrench! practise [sic] a little more Economy." and "John Bull sits foursquare in an arm-chair, between two surgeons, his arms extended horizontally and supported by the vertical poles which he clutches; these are spirally striped, like the barber's pole, and are such as were used by practisers of phlebotomy. The one in his right hand is inscribed 'Additional Military Staff to support the Peace'; the other: 'Wellington's Staff'. The surgeon on the left is Vansittart, in his Chancellor of the Exchequer's gown, triumphantly holding up his lancet as guineas spout from the incision in John's right arm. The coin is collected by Prince Leopold in a warming-pan inscribed '60,000 per Ann'. [see British Museum Satires No. 12754] and by Princess Charlotte, who holds out a large receptacle inscribed 'For Wedding Garm[ents] Diamond Trinkets & Baubles'. She looks sideways at the warming-pan; her very décolletée dress has a train, and she wears a small crown or coronet. His military tunic is covered with stars, and he stares intently at the golden shower. Castlereagh, with a cynical smile, operates on the left arm. A tiny McMahon swarms up the pole and holds out his 'Privy Purse', see British Museum Satires No. 11874, to catch a trickle from the wound. The main shower of guineas falls into the enormous jaws of a squatting and grotesque Chinese mandarin (see British Museum Satires No. 12749) whose obese body, in the form of a large bag, is inscribed 'To pay off Arrears of the Civil List'. Over this bag, the biggest of the receptacles depicted, the gouty Regent stoops forward, supported on crutches, his head turned to the left, staring with apprehensive malevolence at Brougham who stands on the extreme left, not caricatured. John Bull, a stout 'cit', wears patched and ragged waistcoat and breeches. His empty pockets are inside out. He registers alarm, and exclaims: "Pray good folks have a little mercy & spare the Vital stream which sustains me!-- Consider what Oceans I have spilt in the late Wars!--I am too much exhausted to Bleed as freely as formerly--You have Open'd so many veins & drain'd me so incessantly that I fear my Constitution is impair'd for ever! My Friends, say that I am Declining fast & will certainly Die of a Galloping Consumption!!!" Two hussars with drawn sabres stand on guard behind his chair, watching the operation with pleased surprise. Behind them, the middle distance and background are filled with soldiers standing at attention with drawn sabres or fixed bayonets, wearing braided tunics and high hussar caps. They have British flags, faintly indicated, one being a Union flag, another the Royal Standard, and a fringed banner inscribed 'Standing Army For the Peace Establishment'. On the right, behind the Regent, the Tsar walks off to the right, looking over his shoulder with a pleased smile; he carries a sack across his shoulder inscribed 'Subsidies Russia'. With him, but less conspicuous, are Francis I and Frederick William; each carries a basket on his head heaped with coins, one 'Subsidies For Austria', the other 'Subsidies for Prussia'. All three wear uniform. Brougham, who wears a long loose coat, with trousers, and holds a top-hat, stands in profile to the right, his right arm extended with admonitory finger pointing at John Bull. He says: "Retrench! Johnny, Retrench!--practise a little more Economy in your present Wretched State, or you'll never Recover!--you have too many Physicians & their constant Employment is very Expensive they will not leave you till they have the last Shilling!--Kick out the Doctors & a fig for the Disease!!" At his feet and in the foreground is a neat box inscribed '37 Styptics [see British Museum Satires No. 12750, &c.] for Curing John Bull's Dreadful Disorder by Brougham & C°.' Near it are the fragments of a broken tub inscribed: 'Property Tax receiver rendered useless by the "ignorant impatience" of John Bull.' In front of John are a jar of 'Leeches' and a book: 'The Red Book or or [sic] a list of Persons Holding Sinecures'. Three tubs heaped with coin stand on the right, each progressively larger in size, inscribed: [1] 'Regency Presents & Yearly Allowance to Bonaparte & the Govenors [sic] Establist at St Helena'; [2] 'To Support the Allied Army in France'; [3] 'Extra Allowance for Commissrs of Dockyards & other fresh-water Agents of the Navy who will on the Peace Establishment of 1816 greatly exceed in expence the War Estabt of 1804 when the British Navy with 140,000 seamen Covered the Ocean.'"--British Museum online catalogue

Abstract:
"A (tricolour) top with the head of Napoleon spins, above the ground, savagely lashed by representatives of the Allies. His arms and his legs have already been severed from his body, now represented only by the madly spinning top. The most violently active is Blücher (left) stripped to the shirt, his coat and hat thrown on a drum on the extreme left, beside which lie his gloves and baton. Facing them is Wellington (right) equally effective, stern, but less savage. Full-face, and immediately behind the top is the Tsar, left hand on hip; his whip is inscribed 'Knout'. Between him and Wellington is Schwarzenberg (or Francis I). Bernadotte stands rather behind, between Blücher and Alexander, both hands on his hips; he holds a whip but is an amused spectator. Behind (right) the future King of Holland, crowned and wearing a star, but dressed in the breeches and jacket of the Dutchman in English caricature, sits under a tree on a cask of 'Hollands'. He watches delightedly, holding up one of Napoleon's legs inscribed 'United Netherlands'. The other leg, the thigh inscribed 'Swisslad, the boot Italy, lies near Blücher. At Wellington's feet is the right arm inscribed Spain & Portugal'; the left arm, inscribed 'Germany', is near Schwarzenberg. Napoleon's orb and (broken) sceptre lie near him, with some of the feathers from the large hat which is still on his head; his horrified and shrieking profile faces Blücher. In the background (left) is a road along which a carriage drives off, drawn by four galloping horses. It contains tiny figures: Marie Louise, crowned and looking behind her, and the little King of Rome also crowned and waving a sceptre. Two soldiers are on the box, two others sit behind. In the air behind Bernadotte a demon flies off to the left, with Joseph Bonaparte clutching his barbed tail. The latter, his crown flying off, looks back horrified, exclaiming "O! "Three allied generals (left) hold the long handle of a shovel (peel) on which is a dish containing a tiny Napoleon. This they try to push into a baker's oven, but are hindered by the Austrian emperor, who holds the door of the oven, feigning to be trying to open it, but actually holding it at an angle which prevents the entry of the dish. The leading baker is Blücher, wearing an apron over his uniform, and without a hat; he looks sternly at Francis, saying, "Pull away Frank! you Keep us waiting!" General Mikhail Woronzoff, young and handsome, immediately behind Blücher, pushes hard, saying, "In with it Blücher." On the extreme left is Bernadotte, one hand on Woronzoff's shoulder, saying, "I tell you what, Woronzow, the Hinges want a little Russia Oil." Francis I, who like the others wears uniform with jack-boots, but has (baker's) over-sleeves to the elbow, says with an expression of startled alarm: "This door Sticks! I dont think I shall get it open?!" A weathercock surmounts his cocked hat. Wellington comes up (right), poking him in the back with his baker's tray on which are two pies. He says: "Shove alltogather [sic] Gentlemen! D-me shove door & all in!" His two pies are 'Soult Pie', with two spurred jack-booted legs projecting through the crust, and a pie with spires and other buildings, with a flag inscribed 'Bourdeaux'. He wears an apron and the order of the Golden Fleece as well as the star of the Garter. A fat, grotesque Dutchman sits on a flat cushion gazing up at the oven; he holds, but does not use, a pair of bellows. In his conical hat is a tobacco-pipe. The fire under the oven is filled with broken eagles and fragments of weapons. Among the debris in the recess for ashes is a crown. Above the oven is the inscription 'Allied Oven' surmounted by a crown and cross-bones. In the shadow formed by the half-open door, a skull (Death) waits to receive Napoleon, who lies on his back, kicking violently, and shouting "Murder! Murder!!"; he wears a large plumed bicorne. "Napoleon, a little figure with a big head, stands with legs astride, head turned to the left, hair on end; his arms are extended, fingers spread, mouth open as if shrieking. He has a grotesque profile with corvine nose and wears high jack-boots with large spurs. At his feet lies a broken baton inscribed 'Magic Wand'. Five allies threaten him at point-blank range, and from a circle of cloud an arm emerges holding a conical 'Allied Extinguisher' above his head. On the extreme left Wellington aims a blunderbuss, saying, "Take a good aim at the Head Gentlemen, & we shall soon settle the Business." On Wellington's left stands Francis I, aiming a small pistol; by his head are the words: 'A way Mr Boney the Hand of Justice [see No. 12247] will put your Night Cap on at last.' On the extreme right a fat Dutchman, wearing a conical cap as in No. 12105, stands behind a small cannon holding a lighted match and a cannon-ball inscribed 'Orange Boven'; he says: "I'll deal out my Oranges to him Wholesale." Abstract:
"Plate from the 'Satirist', xiii. 193. In the text the title continues '. . ., "alias" War'. A satire on the Congress of Prague. Four sovereigns, completely unlike the men in question, in conference. The Tsar sits behind a small rectangular table on which are displayed implements of war in miniature: cannon, pyramids of cannon-balls, muskets, swords, drums, &c., and flags on one of which are fleurs-de-lis. On the left stand the King of Prussia and the Emperor of Austria, on the right is Napoleon. Alexander extends his hands rhetorically, turning to the left, with a puckered scowl, to say to the two Germans: "Come Gentlemen see first if you can agree--if not we'll all fight!" He has quasi-Kalmuck features, and wears an odd-shaped crown, an ermine-bordered robe, with a jewelled necklace and a Greek cross. Frederick William III, on the extreme left, clutches the hilt of his sword and puts his left hand to his cocked hat as if ready to doff it, he turns to Francis I, towards whom a label issues from his mouth: "I am ready to treat or to fight"; a second label floats to the left, inscribed 'Infernal Scoundrel'. Francis I, looking distracted, stands directed to the right, legs apart, and in his left hand is his sabre, the blade of which curves over the Tsar's head, but both hands touch his crown, and he says: "I will wear an independant Crown." He wears hussar uniform, cloak, sash, and elaborately embroidered tunic and pantaloons. Napoleon, tall and burly, with heavy whisker and aquiline profile, wears a plumed bicorne with tricolour cockade and very tattered uniform leaving his legs almost bare, with one dilapidated jack-boot and one damaged stocking; he has a long sword. He stands aggressively with arms dramatically extended, saying, "My Friends! all we wish is Peace." A chain is attached to each great toe, which is fastened to the necks of two miserable princes, tiny figures standing between his outstretched legs. One (left), Charles IV of Spain, wearing a crown and robe, grotesquely knock-kneed and despairing, stands full-face. The other, wearing a crown with uniform and sword, stoops in profile, looking up abjectly at Napoleon's legs. On the extreme right, in the middle distance, is a tall Spanish don, much emaciated, wrapped in a cloak. He looks down with folded arms at a fat British officer beside him, who says: "I ll countenance Austria into our interests." The Spaniard: "I'll be damned if I go to meet a Frenchman in Prague, while there is a Frenchman to meet in Spain!!!" Behind them in the background a tiny Napoleon, wearing a grotesque crown and holding a sword, marches downhill at the head of his soldiers carrying flags; he has a melancholy expression and approaches the edge of a precipitous descent."--British Museum online catalogue

"A game of chess between the Tsar and the Sultan. The latter sits cross-legged on a chest, to which the chess-board, supported on legs, is attached. Nicholas, a military dandy with a hideous profile, moves a piece, saying 'Check Mate'; he has taken two castles and other pieces. With his left hand he slips a large bag of 'Roubles' into the hat of Wellington who stands behind his chair. The Duke raises two fingers, saying, 'I say's Nothing'. The Sultan clutches his turban, registering consternation; to the box on which he sits is chained a Greek (? Capodistrias) in national costume. The Emperor of Austria and King of Prussia stand behind the chess-board; the former says: 'We must look on for the present Brother.' Beside them stands a Quakerish-looking man, hands clasped and thumbs together, probably President Jackson; he says 'Um . .m.. .m.' Behind Wellington (right) are Eldon, with his hands raised in horror, saying 'Here's treatment of Old friends and Allies.' Behind him is Lyndhurst in wig and gown.
