He raises his arms in astonishment at the sight of a still (left) inscribed 'The Q--n's Double Destlled [sic] Essence of Bergamot' [with 'ot' scored through and replaced by 'i']; from this the Queen's head emerges, facing the head of Bergami, which issues from an arm of the still. This is surrounded by smoke and stands on a bench, behind which on a low platform stand Louise Demont and Majocchi, pointing at the object, the latter saying: "Non me Ricordo." A barrister, probably Copley, stands near them, saying: "It's a strong proof but froieng [sic] brew'd and out of our power to discover the Makers." Eldon, dropping his pen, says: "This is cuesed [sic] strong it is certainly doubled proof of their Private works." A profile (? Liverpool) leans forward from the left margin, saying: "My L--ds he can swear to the Smell and Taste." Peers, some astonished, some amused, are seated on benches between Chancellor and witnesses. An ugly parson (right) preaches in close proximity to the canopied pew of the Duke of York, in which the Duke sprawls, with one leg along the edge of the pew. Mrs. Clarke, between them, leans with folded arms on the edge of the pew, facing the Duke. O'Meara says: "Mrs Clark is the Text". The rebus or pictograph, sometimes anagrammatic, would be scarcely comprehensible without the key, unlike the usual 'hieroglyphic letter', e.g. British Museum Satiries No. 11228, &c. "The Duke of York (left) and the Prince of Wales (right) stand one on each side of a church door, each holding out a collecting-plate, and each saying, "Pray remember the poor Charity Children of St Jams parish". Behind, a crowd of men leave the Church, Pitt holding out a plate to them, saying, "What is £130,000 pr Ann when you consider the price of provisions & other things pray remember." Three labels rise from the heads of the reluctant congregation (M.P.s): "I have disinherited my own Son for contracting Debts at Brothels & gaming Tables; At the last Charity Sermon both his Father & he promis'd. that he shd not become chargeable to the parish again"; "This Begging is made a Trade of". The tiny Duchess of York, also holding a plate, stands with her left hand under the Duke's arm, saying, "I was born in a strange Land of honest Parents, but their characters are neither here nor there pray remember". The Princess of Wales, three ostrich plumes in her hair, stands with her plate behind the Prince's back, looking at him reproachfully over her right shoulder and saying, "I came here naked & he hath half cover'd me pray remember". On the extreme right stands the stout Mrs. Fitzherbert in profile to the left, clutching papers inscribed '6000 Pr Ann' (see BMSat 8485); she says: "It's always good to have something in hand." The Duke of Clarence, wearing striped sailor's trousers and a cocked hat, stands on the extreme left with an infant (one of the Fitzclarences) in his arms; he holds a paper (or collecting-box): 'Mrs Jordans Night'. The infant holds a paper: 'For the Benefit of Mrs Jordan - a new Way to pay Old Debts the part of Sr Giles Overreach by Mr George, being his second Appearance in that Character.' (Massinger's comedy, revived several times in the eighteenth century.) The Duke looks down disconsolately as if aware that he would have no share in the collection but would be forced to rely on his mistress's earnings. In the background the King and Queen are seated on one horse as in BMSat 6918, a sign-post pointing 'To Windsor'. The King says: "I never interfere in Parish Business they must provide for their own poor." The Queen says: "Charity begins at home Love who knows what we may all come to." (Cf. In the middle distance are two rocky pinnacles; on one (left) three men dance hand in hand: Loughborough in back view wearing his Chancellor's wig and gown, the Duke of York wearing a cocked hat and his star, and Lord Cholmondeley. From the other, Lady Jersey (with the arms and legs of a goat) staggers backwards, she has horns, and three feathers fall from her head. Lord Jersey, with the body of a goat and long horns, is about to fall. They are being hurled from the rock by thunderbolts inscribed with the words 'What? - What? - What?' (the King's well-known phrase) which issue from heavy clouds, showing that it is the King who has overthrown them. Each machine is an appropriate object mounted on two wheels. [1] 'The Princes Hobby'. The Regent, with elegantly pointed toe, rides a cask inscribed 'Punch Princes Mixture'. [2] 'The Dukes Hobby'. The Duke of York, dressed as a field-marshal, bestrides a large green bag, inscribed '£10.000 for Visiting the Sick' [see British Museum Satires No. 13214, &c.]. [3] 'The Judges Hobby'. "Illustration to a broadside, printed in four columns in the manner of a newspaper, and covering the upper part of the third and fourth columns. A whole-length portrait of Mrs. Clarke (unrecognizable, but alluring), standing with one hand on the head of a sofa. In the background are four oval bust portraits of other women: 'Miss Taylor' [see British Museum Satires No. 11229], 'Mrs Carey' [see British Museum Satires No. 11050], 'Miss Gifford', and 'Mrs Shaw'. ... The text, in eight chapters, is in the quasi-biblical language not uncommon in satires, e.g., British Museum Satires No. 6465, and afterwards exploited by Hone. The text is an account of the relations between the Duke of York and Mrs. Clarke, and the Parliamentary proceedings, highly flattering to Wardle and Burdett. It ends: 'And behold he [the Duke] walketh in a vain shew, which shall fade in the sight of the people, whilst the fame of Wardle, Whitbread, and Burdett shall flourish and endure . . . the tergiversation of the Black Coats may whiten his honour [see British Museum Satires No. 11269], but who can believe him innocent of folly, vice, and acknowledged adultery? ... "John Bull, blindfold, stands on a massive truncated pillar holding the beam of a pair of scales. In one scale (left), near the ground, Mrs. Clarke sits composedly among a mass of papers, holding one inscribed My dear Dearest Dearest Darling [see British Museum satires no. 11228, &c.]. The others are inscribed: Sandon, Toyne [Tonyn], Dowler, Omeara, Carter, French, Knight, Clavering. In the other scale the Duke of York swings high in the air, and shouts down to three men on the ground: Save me save me Save my Honour [cf. British Museum satires no. 11269]. They haul hard at ropes attached to his scale, which they tilt sideways so that he is in danger of falling out. One, a drink-blotched bishop wearing a mitre, says: Pull away Pull away the Church is in danger; the other two say: Pull away Pull away we lose all our Places, and Pull away pull away we shall lose our Noble Commander. "John Bull crouches on hands and knees on a flat-topped rock: 'Rock of Broad-Bottom'd Security' [cf. BMSats 10530]. On his back is an enormous money-bag: 'The Sinking-Fund - i.e - Taxations of 42 Millions pr Annum'. Petty stands astride on the guineas in the gaping mouth of the bag, shovelling a cascade of coins to greedy ministerialists who stand below, outside the stone gateway of the 'Treasury', whose wall is on the left John, a yokel, out-at-elbows, looks up to say mournfully: " - Toss away! Toss away! my good Boy! toss away!!! - oh how kind it is, to ease me of this Terrible Load!" Petty, looking down, answers: "Patience, Johnny! - ar'nt I tossing-away as fast as I can? ar'nt I reducing of your Taxes to sh/17 & 6d in the Pound? - why you ought to think yourself quite comfortable & Easy, Johnny!" Those nearest the rock are Windham and the fat Lord Temple, with his back to it, catching the coins that overflow from a great heap in the peer's robe which his uncle, Grenville, holds up. Between Grenville and Windham the Marquis of Buckingham has a brimming hat-full. Behind Buckingham' Howick holds up a large hat high above his head. Sidmouth, bending obsequiously, catches some of the overflow from Grenville's store; between him and Temple, a dog, its collar inscribed 'Vansit[tart]' gapes for the small droppings from his master's receptacle (he was Secretary of the Treasury). Behind Grenville, Ellenborough receives a heavy shower on his head. Sheridan, as Harlequin (cf. BMSat 9916), his wooden sword held behind his back, holds out with a servile gesture a (full) bonnet rouge shaped like a fool's cap. Behind him, Lauderdale, in Highland dress, holds out a Scots cap. Towering above Sheridan, Moira holds up an enormous cocked hat, trimmed with the Prince's feathers, and receives, after Grenville, the largest harvest of coin. In his right. hand are papers: 'Price of Stocks'. Between him and Ellenborough, the Duke of Clarence holds up a chamber-pot, inscribed 'Royal Jordan' [see BMSat 7909, &c.]. Behind him is the head of the Duke of York. Erskine, on the left, holds out the Purse of the Great Seal. Next him are Spencer, holding up a cocked hat, and Norfolk, holding up a punch-bowl, inscribed 'Majesty of the People', the toast given by him, which, inter alia, led to his rightemoval from the Privy Council (see BMSat 9168, &c). An aquiline profile, next Norfolk, suggests George Hanger. A youthful face on the extreme left. may indicate Lord Holland. "A reception given by Mr. and Mrs. Fox to various groups of the Opposition, [With one or two exceptions the identifications are those of Miss Banks; the characterization is excellent, and most are unmistakeable.] in which the arrangement has political and social significance. Three Grenvilles bow to the host and hostess; the Marquis of Buckingham, wearing his ribbon, holding hat and gold-headed cane and showing a gouty leg and foot, bends low. Next is Lord Grenville, clasping his hat to his breast, more ingratiating but less obsequious than his brother. Next is the stout Lord Temple, awkwardly imitating his uncle's gesture. Fox, wearing a sword, returns Buckingham's bow, his hand on his heart; on his right. stands the fat Mrs. Fox, curtseying, and ogling Grenville. She holds a fan on which is a profile portrait of 'Napoleone Ist'; from her pocket projects a flask of 'French Brandy', indicative of her antecedents (cf. BMSats 7370, 10589) as well as her sympathies, cf. BMSat 9892). On the extreme right. is the Prince of Wales, in back view, the greater part of his figure cut off by the margin, but unmistakable. From his pocket projects a paper: 'Henry IV. Sc. I [sic] Pr of W -l know you all, & shall . . . while.' A short fat man gazes up at him admiringly, obsequiously amused; he is identified by Miss Banks as 'Mr [i.e. General] Fitzpatrick', but resembles M. A. Taylor. Beside him is a dog, his collar inscribed 'Tommy Tattle' [? Thomas Tyrwhitt]. Mrs. Fitzherbert sits, in semi-state, in the corner of a sofa, holding a fan on which are the Prince's feathers and 'Ich Dien'; she is about to take a ticket, 'Coalition Masquerade', proffered with ingratiating vivacity by Lord Carlisle. Next Carlisle behind the sofa stands the Duke of Clarence, facing the Prince, and cruelly caricatured. Mrs. Jordan takes his right. arm, but is reading Jobson & Nell [characters in 'The Devil to pay] with the Farce of Equality' [see BMSat 7908, &c.]. Behind the pair are Col. McMahon, sly and furtive, and a large man, resembling the Duke of York. [Identified by Miss Banks as 'Mr. Tyrwitt', but Tommy Tyrwhitt was noted for his small size. ] Behind Mrs. Fitzherbert, Erskine, in wig and gown, delightedly holds up a large paper (the words partly obscured): 'Arraignments for the new Broad-Bottom'd Administration [cf. "Officers promenade, swaggering selfconsciously; three couples are arm-in-arm. One pair, one of whom is a lancer with a moustache, arrogantly stare at a taller and more dignified Life Guards officer wearing a huge curling plume on the crest of his helmet. All have small high waists with belts or sashes, bulging breasts, high collars, and stocks, narrow and sometimes tiny coat-tails, tight sleeves, high padded shoulders; usually a bush of hair projects from a fantastic shako or helmet. The two Life Guards officers have boots, wide at the top, reaching to the thigh. Two officers wear fantastically large plumed shakos. "A stout and comely lady stands at the door of an ornamentally rustic cottage, shaking a cloth from which tiny officers leap out, holding money-bags. The cloth is inscribed in large letters 'Pin Money instead of Allowance'. She says: "This is a profitable Plan of his and pays me a Devilish deal better than he can, besides the Patronage!!" Five elderly officers of normal size (right) watch their pigmy rivals with consternation. One looks through his glass, saying, "To waste ones health in unwholesome Climates an then fail of promotion because we cannot fee ****** or Army Agents Agents.!!" Another says: "Mother Careys Chickens by - then we shall have a storm indeed!" A third exclaims: "What to spend our lives in the service of our Country, and to be thus degraded by a parcel of Boys!!" He has a wooden leg and a patch over one eye. Another had lost his right arm, and the group seem hardly fit for active service. The 'boys' wear fashionable crescent-shaped cocked hats with plumes, the others old-fashioned hats with cockade, loop, and button. Over the door is inscribed in large letters '... mus Cottage'. It has the ornamental Gothic windows with leaded panes and thatched roof of fashionable rusticity. Beside it is a weeping willow. Below the title: 'NB these Birds have lately been seen hovering about the Horse Guards'. Below the design: 'a Storm Finch, or stormy petterel (the Mother Careys Chickens of the Sailors). The King, seated on the throne (right) in hunting-dress, leans eagerly forward. The Duke is followed by soldiers bearing (worthless) trophies of victory; he says: "Th-th-th-there's Paris for you, damme! did not I say I'd take it? -th-thats all! - a-a-and here's all the Plunder of France! and all the Heads of the whole nation of Sans Culottes, damme! - if y-y-you will do me any honor, why do it; - if not, why even take the next Paris yourself, damme! - look 'e I expect to be made either a Cæsar or an Alexander! ------, d-d-d-d-damme!' "The Duke of York (left), in regimentals and wearing a cocked hat, stands in profile to the right, tipsily swaggering; he hands to George III two large keys: 'Keys of Paris'. The King, seated on the throne (right) in hunting-dress, leans eagerly forward. The Duke is followed by soldiers bearing (worthless) trophies of victory; he says: "Th-th-th-there's Paris for you, damme! did not I say I'd take it? -th-thats all! - a-a-and here's all the Plunder of France! and all the Heads of the whole nation of Sans Culottes, damme! - if y-y-you will do me any honor, why do it; - if not, why even take the next Paris yourself, damme! - look 'e I expect to be made either a Cæsar or an Alexander! ------, d-d-d-d-damme!' The King, eagerly goggling, says: "What! what! Keys of Paris! Keys of Paris! give us hold! gads bobs, its nothing but, Veni, with you, lad, hay? Veni, Vidi? - ay, ay! Veni, Vidi, Vici! - ay, ay." A tricolour standard inscribed 'Vive la Liberta' lies at the King's feet. Behind the Duke are French weapons, broken: a sword inscribed 'Vive la Lib . .', a cannon similarly inscribed, cannon-balls, a musket, and a pile of decapitated heads wearing bonnets-rouges, on which tramples the Duke's secretary, who holds out a scroll inscribed: 'Authentic Journal - Issuing Manifesto's - Taking Dunkirk [see BMSat 8341] 1500 Barrels of Gunpowder 32 pieces of Cannon, & killing 5000 Troops, - sending off 10000 to the hospitals in Flanders - marching into the heart of France, & finishing the War without expence. Js Suckfizzle Secretary.' The secretary, who wears regimentals, a pen behind his ear, says, "Here's something like a List of glorious Actions! - well, let them that come after us do as much as we have done, and the Campaign will soon come to a conclusion." Behind him, guardsmen advance carrying bulky burdens: bales of 'Assignats', a large basket of sabots inscribed 'Wooden Shoes of the Poissards', a bundle of 'Breeches of the Sans Coulotte[s]', a pot from which frogs are leaping. Pitt sits on the dais at the King's left hand; he writes on papers which he supports on his up-drawn knees: 'Bricks Rum - Brandy Water Air'; 'new Taxes not to be felt by the Swinish Multitude'; 'loan of Eleven Millions.' Behind the throne (right) sits the Queen in profile to the right, gleefully holding out an apron into which the Devil shovels coins from a sack inscribed 'Two Millions Pr Annm'; only his horns, arms, and a hoof appear on the extreme right. Above the Queen's head are shelves on which are ranged large money-bags, inscribed: 'Spy Money 40000 pr A'; 'for Flatterers & Toad-eaters [cf. Encore." The King says to the bejewelled Queen: "No! no! no Jacobins here all Loyal all Loyal, Charming Man the Author eh! charming Man, never saw him in such a good light before." Three princesses follow; one says: "bless me I never saw that General at Court". Behind are two princes in uniform with gorgets, evidently the Dukes of York and Cumberland. "French troops march with fixed bayonets up St. James's Street, the houses receding in perspective to the gate of the Palace, which is blazing. In the foreground on the left and right are 'White's' and 'Brookes's'. The former is being raided by French troops; the Opposition is in triumphant possession of the latter. In the centre foreground a 'tree of Liberty' (see BMSat 9214, &c.) has been planted: a pole garlanded with flowers and surmounted by a large cap of 'Libertas'. To this pole Pitt, stripped to the waist, is tied, while Fox (left) flogs him ferociously, a birch-rod in each hand. Between Fox's feet lies a headsman's axe, bloodstained; on it stands a perky little chicken with the head of M. A. Taylor (see BMSat 6777). On the right is an ox, his collar, from which a broken cord dangles, inscribed 'Great Bedfordshire Ox' (the duke of Bedford); it is tossing Burke, goaded on by Thelwall, who holds its tail, and flourishes a document inscribed 'Thelwals Lectures' (see BMSat 8685). "Mrs. Clarke and four other women stoop down and directs blasts from large posteriors, defined by tight dresses, against the sails of a windmill (right) which pivot upon the head of the Duke of York. The four sails are inscribed respectively, Army, State, Navy, Church. The mill, on a low hill to which a winding path ascends, is Commission Warehouse. The names of the five meretricious-looking women are inscribed on their posteriors. One clutching a tree, on the extreme left, and advantageously placed on a hillock, is Carey. She says: If this wont raise the Wind, I do not know what will, This is not the first time I have employed my bottom to raise the Wind. The other four are close together: Cressaid, Sutherland, Cook, and Clarke, who says: Aye and no bad way to raise an Army-also. Between the women and the mill stands a dismayed little man with arms extended; he says: O ho this will not bring Grist to my Mill I must put a stop to this; and remove this Mill to Charing Cross."--British Museum online catalogue

"Notorious rakes and gamblers ride or run furiously towards rays descending from a sun in the upper left corner of the design inscribed 'Chance'; its centre, a segment of which is visible, is composed of the letters on an 'E.O.' (roulette) table (cf. British Museum Satires No. 5928). The foremost pair are the Duke of Clarence and the Prince of Wales; the Duke, slightly ahead, wears a chamber-pot on his head marked with an anchor (cf. British Museum Satires No. 7909) and sits behind Mrs. Jordan, who cries, "Push away! that's your sort!" He cries, "Straight Sailing! that's your sort!" Both the horses have human heads; that of the Duke says, "I'm the Sort for Leading; that of the Prince is Fox." The Prince's hat with feathers and the motto 'Ich dien' flies from his head, two women sit behind him; the one holding his waist (? Mrs. Crouch) says, "No Jealous Fitz - that's your sort!" The other, seated behind her, holds the end of the Prince's shirt, she has a large fox's brush and is probably Mrs. Armistead; she says, "Well done Charley! That's your sort!" The Prince says, "I'm the sort for a Widow - she's done over!" Mrs. Fitzherbert has fallen from the horse into a stream and holds out her arms towards the Prince. From the water emerges a post inscribed 'Styx', a bridge or culvert beside it is 'Hazard'. Behind this group the Duke of York runs forward, wearing a hat made of playing-cards surmounted by a teetotum inscribed 'ABC....' In his right hand he holds out a dice-box inscribed 'Oat - ' shaking from it two dice inscribed 'la' and 'nds' (he had recently bought Oatlands); in his left is a tennis racquet. He wears regimentals; the ribbon across his shoulder is formed of playing-cards; at his back is a knapsack full of 'Tennis Balls' (cf. British Museum Satires No. 7903) which resemble guineas. He says, "I'm the sort! for running out!" For his gaming see British Museum Satires No. 7301 (5), &c. Just behind him ride three bloods with cropped hair, wearing the high hats, long breeches, and coats with shawl collars hanging away from the neck which such young men affected (see British Museum Satires No. 8040, &c). The one nearest the spectator rides a horse with a bandage over his eyes inscribed 'Lottery Hack'; he looks up, regardless of the fact that he is riding into a pit, and points with his long whip to a castle resting on clouds inscribed 'Illegal Insurance' (cf. British Museum Satires No. 7750); he says, "That's your sort - I'm in for it - I shall do the deep Ones!" The other two shout, "Go it! Dam'me! that 's your sort!" and "Dam Trade! Life and a Racer! that 's your sort." Behind this group is a couple on a galloping horse: a stout jovial woman wearing breeches rides astride, waving her whip, behind her sits an anxious-looking elderly citizen, wearing petticoats. He says, "We're the wrong side of Temple Bar, my dear, we are only the sort to be laughed at"; she answers, "Peace good Mr Jerry Candle-wick, its life! and Life and the Breeches! thats the sort." By their horse's head is a signpost inscribed 'Rotten Row', with a pointing hand inscribed 'Hoyle' (on Whist), the vertical post inscribed 'Crim. con.' The last rider is a stout woman, probably Mrs. Hobart (noted for her faro-table, see British Museum Satires No. 8167), on a rocking-horse inscribed 'Faro'; she carries on her arm a wicker cage containing pigeons and says, "Unplucked Pidgeons! that's the sort." In the foreground on the extreme right an elderly Jew sits on a bank watching the mad race with a smile; he says, "50 per Cent! dats de sort! if dey ride to de Devil, dey leave coot Security behind, Ah! Security! dot's de sort." Near him is a card house; at his feet is the Knave of Clubs. In the front of the design and near the Duke of York are other playing cards (left to right): four aces, the two of diamonds, King of Hearts, and (?) "Two adjacent designs. [1] The Regent tipsily bestrides a fat and ugly cook, who is on her hands and knees; he flourishes a bottle of 'Royal Max' [gin] and a glass and shouts: "Ha! ha! D--me! this is glorious! this is Princely!!--better fun than the Hertford Hobby [see British Museum Satires No. 13213]--Kitchen stuff & Dishclouts for ever I say D--me!!--If the rascals caricature me, I'll buy em All up d--me." The cook, still holding the broken dish from which a huge cod's head has fallen, exclaims: "Oh! Master do let me alone & see! you've thrown the Cods head & Shoulders all in the dirt!" In the background, Lady Hertford, wearing a coronet, looks angrily from a doorway. On the floor in the foreground are a 'Royal Greas Pot', rolling-pin, and a ladle, with a playbill: 'Brighton--under the Pub [Patr]onage of [the Princ]e Regent--High Life below Stairs Principle Character--G P R'. [2] The Duke of York, very erect, rides a velocipede (see British Museum Satires No. 13399) in profile to the right, with Mrs. Carey behind him in a little seat over the back wheel, her hands on his shoulders. He wears Windsor uniform of military cut, with breeches, spurred top-boots, and a top-hat, which he raises. Across the pole hangs a fat purse inscribed '10,000 pr annm Custos [Personae Regis]' which serves as saddle. He says: "I say Carey: this Windsor job, is a devilish snug concern & this saddle bag makes it very pleasant riding!--I wish our army had been mounted on these Hobby's in Flanders;--I don't mean Waterloo--" She answers: "I know what you mean;--but it is a good joke, to think while the Establishment of the Father is redud at Windsor: the sons Establist is increas'd at Fulham--tis properly coming York over John Bull." In the background John Bull, a sturdy fellow, stands with folded arms outside a miserable thatched hut where women and children are crouching. "Six scenes, arranged in two rows, each with an inscription above the design. The figures are realistic, not 'Lilliputian', as in British Museum Satires No. 11134, &c. [1] 'Lilliput is situated a considerable distance from the Island of Great Britain, and the Natives have many singular manners and customs, one in particular is swearing to give a vote according to conscience with one hand, and receiving a bribe with the other--what a happy thing it is that nothing of the kind ever occured in England.' A scene at the hustings, showing one of the posts inscribed 'St M . . .' indicating the polling-place for one of the Westminster parishes, cf. British Museum Satires No. 10619, &c. An elector takes a book (Testament) from a poll-clerk, while a man slips coins into the hand which he holds behind his back. There are spectators (or voters) outside and inside the hustings; a woman sells a ballad. [2] 'They have a litte [sic] man in Lilliput call'd John Bull, we suppose in humble imitation of that Gentleman so named in our Country but the comparison can never hold good, the Lilliputian John Bull though overburthened with Taxes is continually visited by the collector for more--we well know that is not the case in England!!' John Bull, a fat 'cit', is seated in an arm-chair wearing a hat, with a tankard and pipe on a table beside him. He looks up angrily at a lean tax-collector who stoops towards him, holding an open book. On the wall is a (damaged) picture, 'Liberty', holding her cap on a staff. [3] 'There we frequently see Merit in distress, and Ignorance, rolling in affluence, if such facts were mention'd in England, they would not be believed!! their manners are so different.' A street scene. A small thin man (left), his eyes on the ground, and a fat, vulgar, arrogant fellow walk towards each other on the pavement. The former has his hand in his coat-pocket in which is a pamphlet: 'Poem[s] on var ....' They are identified by two bills on the wall: 'By Permission of the Lord Chamberlain--for the Benefit of Peter Prose authour of several Pieces' and (headed by the Royal Arms) 'Slushbuckett Nightman to his Majesty'. [4] 'In Lilliput it is well known that a Female throug [sic] certain influence has disposed of situations in the Army and Church, what would our John Bull say to that!!' Mrs. Clarke receives her clients seated at a small round table; she holds out her hand to take a money-bag from a parson (O'Meara, see British Museum Satires No. 11258, &c.). Behind, an officer advances, sweeping the ground deferentially with his cocked hat, a money-bag in his hand. The head of a third applicant is on the extreme right. A window and a folding screen form a background. The Duke of York inconspicuously watches from behind the screen. See British Museum Satires No. 11216, &c. [5] 'A certain Nobleman in Lilliput is said to have become a jobber and disposed of a seat in Parliament; a pretty Parliament that must be!! O John Bull you are a happy man!' Castlereagh and another well-dressed man sit facing each other across a small round table. Castlereagh hands over a document, the other a money-bag. [6] 'In Lilliput it is common for a boy of fifteen through interest, to leap over the shoulders of a vetran Hero!--Ay John Bull you may well be suprized--but such things are practiced there we assure you.' A boyish officer poised on the bent back of an elderly one, is about to leap over his head; he wears a fashionable crescent-shaped cocked hat; the elder man's old-fashioned tricorne falls to the ground. In front of them is an open door set in a stone arch, probably that of the Horse Guards. John Bull, a fat 'cit', stands in profile to the right, gazing in astonishment. On the roof is a bush supporting a placard: Acquitted Glorious Majority of 82. Inside the coach are three lawyers, as in British Museum Satires No. 11269, who are not characterized. The coach is surrounded by a cheering mob. Mrs. Clarke, a termagant with streaming hair, holds up clenched fists towards the Duke. Next her is a fat parson, who says: I always said he was Innocent. A man shouts Huzza Glorias News for Old England. Next him is a bearded Jew in a long gown with a sack on his shoulder inscribed Left of Regimentals. A man shouts: That's right-go it my Darling [cf. "The Duke of York (right) dances a jig or hornpipe with a housemaid wearing a mob-cap and apron, who holds up a broom. The mistress of the house sits on a settee against the wall, watch-them with gestures of rage and indignation. Two men, blowing wind-instruments, watch from a musicians' gallery (left), on which is inscribed 'Horns! Horns! Horns!' Under the gallery persons are indicated turning their backs on the dancers. After the title is etched: 'Hic est, cujus amans hospita capta dolo est.'
