- Two versions of a viewbook, each with a different binding, that consist of photographs along the Columbia River, as well as images of Idaho, Oregon, and Washington, created by Isaac Grundy Davidson and compiled by printer George H. Himes, both from Portland, Oregon, ca. 1879. One volume bound in wood and ebony, and the other volume bound in leather. Several images relate to the construction of the Northern Pacific Railroad and to the Oregon Railway and Navigation Company, General overviews of the Columbia River include views of the Lower Cascades and Upper Cascades, as well as a copy photograph from a painting. Views along the Columbia River in Washington include Beacon Rock (referred to as Castle Rock), Gibraltar Rock, Cape Horn, and Cape Disappointment at the mouth of river, as well as a view of Bradford Island in Oregon, Images of Idaho along the Clark Fork River include views of Cabinet Gorge and of the communities of Clark Fork and Cabinet, as well as images of railway construction by the Northern Pacific Railroad Company that consist of a trestle bridge under construction at Clark Fork and railway grading at Big Bluff. - The Rephotographic Survey Project, which operated between 1977 and 1979, visited the sites of photographs taken in the nineteenth century and rephotographed them. The original landscape, photography from Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, New Mexico, Arizona, Idaho, and Nevada were originally made by William Henry Jackson, Timothy O'Sullivan, John Hillers, Andrew J. Russell, and Alexander Gardner. and Each photograph is labeled with a site number located on the bottom left corner on the back of the print.

- Description:
- Charles Roscoe Savage (1832-1909), British-born landscape photographer of the American West, joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1848. In 1856, Savage immigrated to New York and began photography assignments from the LDS Church. He moved with his family to Salt Lake City, Utah, in 1860. In 1862, he formed a partnership with George Martin Ottinger--the firm, Savage & Ottinger, was legally dissolved in 1870. From 1870 to 1875, Savage ran the Pioneer Art Gallery; from 1875 to 1883, he ran the Art Bazaar. His negatives were destroyed in a fire on 1883 June 26; the Art Bazaar, however, remained open until 1926, when Savage's sons closed its doors permanently., Captions in English., Captions in the negative., Title devised by cataloger., and Place of creation and date supplied by cataloger.

- Description:
- William Henry Holmes was a topographic artist with the Geological and Geographical Survey of the Territories under Ferdinand V. Hayden. In 1872 and again in 1878 he was with Hayden in the Yellowstone, and in 1874 he and the photographer William Henry Jackson explored the Mesa Verde region of Colorado. Holmes headed a division exploring the San Juan Region of Colorado in 1875, and was later in Idaho., Holmes continued his work as a geologist and topographer with the United States Geological Survey in the Grand Canyon in 1880, and his topographic drawings became the basic illustrations for Clarence E. Dutton's 'Tertiary History of the Grand Canyon.' He later served as chief of archaeological field work with the Bureau of Ethnology, Smithsonian Institution., and Manuscript captions written on verso of many photographs and inscribed into negatives of others. The single photograph by G. Wharton James bears a Bureau of Ethnology stamp.
