Abstract:
"Three ramshackle two-wheeled carts drawn by wretched horses race (right to left) against a background formed by the clouds of dust which they have raised, with a row of gabled houses (right) inscribed 'St Giles', terminating in a church spire (left), and probably representing Broad St. Giles. The occupants of the carts are Irish costermongers typical of St. Giles. The foremost horse gallops, urged on by the shouts of a standing man brandishing a club. The other occupants, two women and a man, cheer derisively the next cart, whose horse has fallen, one woman falling from it head-first, another lies on the ground. The driver lashes the horse furiously. The third cart, of heavier construction, is starting. The horses are partly obscured by the clouds of dust, but denizens watch from casement windows and a door. "A parson, just arrived at an inn, a grosser Dr. Syntax (see British Museum Satires No. 11507), makes advances to a comely and willing chambermaid, who holds warming-pan, lighted candle, and saddle-bags, and is conducting him to his room. They are at the foot of the staircase. A young military officer on the stairs tipsily directs a stream towards the parson's hat. On the wall behind the latter: 'Fountain Inn-Entertainment for Man and Horse Gentlemen supplied with Fishing Tackle &c &c'. Behind his back (right) an elderly man in a night-shirt looks angrily from a room, holding a lighted candle. In the foreground (right) is a clutter of chamber-pots, bucket, mop, boot-jack, &c."--British Museum online catalogue

"A handsome strapping woman stands in the doorway of a brothel, a corner house of some size (right), tugging hard at the neck-cloth of a plainly dressed man, saying, "Wont you come, wont you come Mr Mug [a popular song, see British Museum Satires No. 11205]." He leans back, pushing against the door-post, and the woman's chest, trying to escape, and saying: "Avaunt thee Satan." Two laughing prostitutes lean against him (left), pushing their posteriors against his, to prevent his escape; one of them, for better purchase, presses her hands and a foot against the post of the sign-board before the door. On this is a pictorial sign: 'Cat and Bagpipes'. A dog rushes barking towards the struggle. "Eight authors, lean and elderly, dine at an oval table in a handsome book-lined room. A plump man sits at the head of the table (left), reading and gesticulating. The others drink wine, or eat dessert; one helps himself from a punch-bowl. Below the design: "People think that we often dine with Democritus, and there they are mistaken. There is not one of my fraternity, not even excepting the makers of Almanacks who is not welcome to some good table - As for my own part, there are two families where I am received with pleasure. I have two covers laid for me every day one at the house of a fat director of the farms to whom I have dedicated a romance, and the other at the house of a rich Citizen who has the desease of being thought to entertain wits ever) day at his table, luckily he is not very delicate in his choice and the city furnishes him with great plenty"."--British Museum online catalogue
