"The Prince of Wales (left) leads a goat with the head of Mrs. Fitzherbert (right) to the door of the forecourt of a large town-house, held partly open by the Duchess of York. She says, "O Dunder & Wonder! - what Cratur is dat which you are bringing here ? - relation of mine, indeed? - no, no! - me know no Nanny-goat-Princess! - so set off, with your bargain, you poor - Toasted - Cheese! you! - for she sha'nt come in here, to poison the house! - off! - off! - off." The Prince, who wears in his hat a leek, with his motto, 'ich dien', answers, "Not open the Toor ? - Cot-splutter-a-nails - when Nanny is come to see you, herself? - vhy isn't Nanny a Princess too ? - & a Velch Princess? - and hur is come to visit hur Brothers & hur Sisters! - & not to let hur in? why the Voman is mad, sure!" In place of a star he wears a medallion enclosing a pair of goat's horns. He holds his goat by a ribbon wreathed with roses. Mrs. Fitzherbert has goat's horns and wears a coronet with the Prince's feathers; she looks up at him with an expression of dignified surprise. ... The door of the Duke's house is surmounted by a pediment decorated with the Prussian eagle and pairs of doves (an emblem on the Duchess's state-bed, 'Lond. Abstract:
"Satire on Lord Bute in the form of a reply to Henry Howard's bawdy ballad, "The Queen's Ass" (BM Satires 3870): the zebra kicks Howard, who has fallen to the ground, behind him a group of men comprising John Fielding, the three Cherokee chiefs who visited London in 1762, and another who may be identified as the man referred to in the verse below as "M-re [who] sally'd forth the fair Sex to relieve"; on the right, Bute, dressed in tartan and wearing a boot, riding a tamed British Lion; a Jewish stockbroker in the stocks; and George Whitfield looking into a mirror which reflects the image of an ass. In the background Charles Churchill, wielding a stick, chases off Bute's supporters, the journalists Arthur Murphy and Tobias Smollett, who raise their hands in surprise. Engraved inscriptions, title and verses in two columns by "Fartinando", to be sung to the tune of "The Ass in the Chaplet"."--British Museum online catalogue

"Five British sailors make a furious attack on six French soldiers, grotesque and terrified creatures, whom the sailors humiliate and insult. Their officer (left), who holds a British flag, is threatened by a sailor with clenched fists, and excretes, terrified. A sailor with a scourge slashes the bared posteriors of a Frenchman who grovels on the ground, saying, "oh le pauvre Commandant"; he says, "Now foutre you'l take 2 Merchants Ships for a fleet of Men of War again". A Frenchman, nearly throttled by an angry sailor, cries "Ca-ira Ca-ira". A sailor pulls the queue of the drummer, to whom he offers a piece of tobacco, saying, "here you B--g--r heres a stale Quid for you Instead of Hartshorn". A sailor on the extreme right pulls the queue of a Frenchman and raises his club to strike; the latter says, "oh Diable we was Make de Dam Mistake Parblue". The sailor answers, "aye aye D------n Your Eyes Ill make you Blue and Black too". In the background (left) are buildings inscribed 'Nantes'."--British Museum online catalogue

"Satire on Cardinal Fleury and French dejction at the success of Admiral Vernon, coupled with condemnation of Robert Walpole for his initial opposition to the war. Fleury, finely dressed in cardinal's robes, rises from a chair and teeters on the edge of a cliff, looking in alarm at a medallion with a laureated head lettered, "Admiral Vernon"; under his arm is a scroll, lettered, "His iron will geet ye better of my Gold./G[o]d, he'll take all our Aquisitions in America." July 1740. Behind Fleury is a wall covered in graffiti: a gallows from which hangs a fat man (Walpole) lettered, "No matter yt he is long than ye Gallow's"; a man with the head of a bird who pushes a wheelbarrow; a windmill; a donkey laden with a pack; the heady of an angry Spaniard with a bird on his hat; another Spaniard, whole-length, leaning on a stick, a dog biting the tail of his cloak and two birds flying around his head; in the middle of the wall is a circular opening through which can be seen "Poor Hosier's Fleet"; a cock lettered, "Crown'd twice", stands on the wall. A pole rises from the wall, bearing a severed head, lettering identifies this as "Wall/Pole"; a ribbon hangs from the mouth lettered, "What Pity is it we can die but Once to serve our Country/Ad. Cato." Behind the wall on the right, is an imposing building flying the union flag; three crowns rest on clouds, and lightning flashes in the sky. Abstract:
"Satire on the negotiations for the Peace of Paris. A lion and lioness (the King and Queen) look in alarm from the window of a coach (Great Britain) as it crashes against a large rock. Lord Bute, the driver, and Princess Augusta, who has been sitting beside him, fall headlong to the ground and the horses (bearing names connected with British actions in the Seven Years War: "Germany", "Guardeloup", "Pondechery", "America", "Martinico" and "Quebec") run off. Bute cries out, "De'el dam that Havanna Snuff its all most blinded me". The postilion, Henry Fox, lies on the ground having hit his head on a rock labelled "Newfound Land"; a speech balloon lettered "Snugg" emerges from his mouth. Behind him Pitt, holding a whip, grasps the leading horse's reins; the Marquis of Granby gallops up to assist him, together with William Beckford (who was shortly to become Lord Mayor of London) and the Duke of Newcastle. In the foreground is a conflict involving a number of journalists: Bute's supporters, Arthur Murphy and Tobias Smollett shoot their pistols at Pitt, and further to the right Charles Churchill, in clerical robes, fires a cannon labelled "North Briton" at them, causing another man to fall to the ground his arm resting on a copy of the Gazetteer (the fallen man must be either Charles Say, editor, or John Almon, contributor to the Gazetteer, an anti-Bute newspaper), with the headline, "A letter from Darlington" (a reference to Henry Vane, 2nd Earl of Darlington, a relation of Bute's by marriage). The British lion beside Churchill urinates on the Scottish thistle. Behind this group, the Duke of Cumberland runs forward anxiously mopping his bald head, having lost his wig. In the background are Lord Mansfield and the Earl of Loudon, the latter suggesting that they retreat (a reference to his failure to capture Louisbourg from the French in 1757). To the right a group of Scotsmen are driven off by two Englishmen with whips; another Scot sits on the ground scratching himself."--British Museum online catalogue

"Three symmetrically prancing lions (left) and Napoleon (right) as 'The Beast' face each other across a narrow channel. In the background (left) John Bull, an obese citizen, sits surrounded by casks and bales (one marked 'I' or 'L M') under the Tree of the 'Constitution'. This has three branches: in the uppermost is a royal crown, the others (presumably) represent the Lords and Commons, ... Behind him are symbols of industry: men reaping, a bee-hive, a thatched farm-house. Above the tree flies an angel with a flaming sword ... Napoleon's head is scarcely caricatured, but has two horns - on one is poised an imperial crown, on the other the Papal tiara. In his dragon's claws he holds up a dagger and three short chains (for the lions); he is branded '666', and his tail is triply barbed. He has webbed wings, scaly shoulders, and a tiger-like body. Under his feet are broken fragments of crowns, sceptres, and crosiers. ... In the background (right) two demons fly above a breaking staff surmounted with the cap of liberty; at its feet lies a man in chains. A firing squad aims at women and children; buildings are in flames. The (printed) 'Explanation: 'JOHN BULL is sitting under his favourite Oak, supported by Commerce and Industry reaping the Fruits of his Labors, and protected by the power of God, whilst France is enslaved under their Tree of Liberty, which is falling to the Ground - the Honors and Independence of Nations are broken and trampled underfoot, and all the Horrors of War are extending their Ravages with unremitting fury. - Bonaparte is considered as the Dragon, the Beast, and the false Prophet, Rev. xvi. 13, xiii. II, and following verses, xix. 20 - and also as Gog, Ezek. xxxviii. and xxxix. - His brutal and ferocious Dispositions are represented by the Body and Feet of a Tyger; his inordinate Desires, by the Chest, Wings, and Claws of a Dragon, holding out Death or Slavery; his Head with two Horns represents his civil and ecclesiastical Authority; and is intended to point out, that though a Dragon and a Tyger have been the most dreadful and destructive of all real and imaginary Creatures, yet even their horrid Natures are surpassed by the sanguinary and rapacious Dispositions of that implacable Tyrant. - The THREE LIONS represent the united Naval, Regular and Volunteer Force of England, Scotland, and Ireland, watching the Monster's Motions, and springing forth eager to meet him."--British Museum online catalogue
