In Latin., Script: copied by two hands: the main part is by hand A (the Celestine monk Jean Gerson, colophon on f. 119v) , who writes a small Gothica Cursiva Libraria, the evolution of which during the copying of the present book and especially its second section has been studied by Ouy ("Le Célestin", pp. 287-288); hand B, who uses a small Gothica Semitextualis Libraria (rarely adopting Textualis "a"), copied the tabula, the note on f. 119v (see below), most of the headings in art. 5, and the final texts on ff. 140v-141v; he also made a few corrections in the text copied by hand A. The very last text has been added by a third hand in tiny Gothica Cursiva Libraria., Headings, paragraph marks and heightening of the majuscules in red. Numerous 2-line (rarely 3-line) flourished initials in red with black penwork; in art. 4 the seven parts of the text in principle open with a similar initial with diagonal penwork spreads in the margin: ff. 23v (II), 49r (IV), 64v (V), 81v (VI), 103v (VII). Instructions for the rubricator are written in thin Gothica Cursiva Currens in the lower margins, mostly lost due to trimming., Headings in red. Alternately red and blue paragraph marks. The decoration consists of (1) alternately red and blue flourished initials, 2 lines; (2) flourished litterae duplices, 3-5 lines, at the opening of the Distinctiones; they have marginal extensions ("J-staves") in pen and ink over the full height of the text area; (3) on f. 4r a damaged foliate initial on a gold, red and blue background, containing a hybrid, with floral extensions featuring a hybrid head and a hybrid. On f. 37r there is a coarse pen and ink drawing of a sword in the margin, probably related to a Hermogenes quotation in the text about murder., and Binding: Seventeenth century. Sprinkled brown leather over cardboard, the covers simply decorated with blind fillets. Spine with five raised bands and two gold-tooled red leather title-labels with the inscriptions "MS. VALLENS. COMMUNILOQ." and "TRACT. DE RE PUBLICA." Red edges. The spine was reinforced by means of two strips of parchment from an English archival document (ca. 1500) in which the names William Holborn, Robert Ball "nuper de Letheringham" and others appear.

In Latin., Script: the main text is copied by two hands, both writing Gothica Textualis Libraria with similar features. The first wrote the Table and the entire text, except the last items in the Table and the final chapters of the text, from f. 68ra, line 17 onwards, which are copied by the second hand. German features are the undotted y and the shape of the con-abbreviation. Similar features are found in the table for finding the date of Easter, copied in a small Gothica Textualis Libraria, possibly by the same hand. The list of Houses of the Teutonic Order is approximately contemporary, in small Gothica Textualis Libraria under cursive influence (some ascenders are looped). Later additions in various hands. The main part of the text has red headings, paragraph marks and stroking of majuscules; 2-line alternately plain and flourished half inset initials, the latter with primitive penwork, 3-line flourished initials at the opening of the Books; at the opening of the additional chapters plain initials only., Hugo Ripelin's Compendium theologicae veritatis, with three final chapters not belonging to the work of Hugo Ripelin, nor found in the version of his work printed from 1470/1472 and attributed to Albertus Magnus. The manuscript also includes fragments of Praepositinus Cremonensis's Tractatus de officiis, as well as theological notes, an ecclesiastical document, a table for finding the date of Easter, and a record of the Houses of the Teutonic Order in northeastern Europe, with the dates of their foundation and of some other events, 1120 -1266., and Binding: quarter binding (circa 16th century): wooden boards with rounded edges and brown leather, the upper and lower parts of the spine strengthened by means of strips of blind-tooled white leather. The broken boards are repaired by means of leather strips and wooden strips. Remnants of one clasp.

In Latin., Script: copied by three hands: A copied ff. IIr-IIIv (the first section of art. 1) and ff. 1r-184v (Books 1 and 2 of art. 2) in Gothica Semihybrida Libraria; B copied f. IVr-v (the second section of art. 1) in Gothica Semihybrida Currens; C copied ff. 185r-355v (Books 3 and 4 of art. 2) in a narrower and more rapid Semihybrida Libraria with Bastarda features., Collation impossible due to the tight binding. Most quires appear to contain twelve leaves. Horizontal catchwords at right, mostly lost at the trimming of the codex (see e.g. ff. 130v and 142v)., There is no decoration in art. 1 (a 3-line initial was provided on f. IIr). In art. 2 red headings, underlining of authorities and stroking of majuscules; 2-line plain initials, sometimes with long marginal extensions, in red or green in; similar 3-line plain initials at the beginning of each Distinctio in Books 3 and 4 (scribe C); The Prologue (f. 1r) and Book 2 open with a flourished littera duplex in the same colours (c. 6 lines). Books 1 and 3 open with a plain initial, respectively 3 and 5 lines; the opening of Book 4 has no special initial. The decoration is missing in some series of pages, such as ff. 162v-166v and 174v-177v., and Binding: original, red-dyed pigskin over non-bevelled heavy wooden boards; the covers are blind-tooled with frames of thick and thin fillets and floral tools; on both covers the binder's name "Gassner" is stamped in a scroll. In Latin., Script: Written in small gothic bookhand, below top line., Fine flourished initial, 5-line, divided red and blue, with penwork designs in both colors and long marginal tail of letter Q, f. 1r. Smaller flourished initials incorporating the heads of bird-like grotesques and cross-hatching designs. 1-line initials alternate red and blue for chapter lists. Paragraph marks and running headlines in red and blue. Rubrics throughout; instructions for rubricator along outer edges of leaves, some perpendicular to text., and Binding: Date? The covers are wanting but were probably of limp vellum. Original sewing on twisted tawed skin, slit ribbons, the sewing beaded in the center. A fragment of a parchment bifolium from a 14th-century breviary (mostly rubbed and illegible) is glued to the spine and cut out for the sewing supports; a portion of the fragment extends along the front and back of the text block.

Flourished initials of various sizes, styles and quality: blue with red penwork designs, red with blue, red with purple (ff. 75r-119r) and red and blue divided with penwork in purple (e.g., f. 88v); some flourished initials with border extensions (e.g., f. 110v). At the top of the left-hand column of f. 1r there is a blank space (for a small miniature?)., and Binding: Contemporary unbevelled wooden boards covered with dark brown pigskin, simply decorated with fillets. Spine with four raised bands. Five cylindrical brass bosses and corner and side-pieces on each cover. Alternately red and blue paragraph marks. Alternately red and blue 2-line half inset flourished initials, respectively with penwork at the opening of the chapters, with guide letters. 6-line littera duplex with penwork in the same colours on f. 1v., and Binding: spine with four raised bands. On the spine and partly on the covers, an 18th century paper title label with handwritten inscription "Ancien / Manuscrit / sur / Velin / Complet / et ********" (cfr. MSS 940 and 941).
