Description:
In Latin., Watermarks: similar to Briquet Ancre 381, Balance 2427, Tete de boeuf 15102., Script: Gothic cursive script of three hands. Scribe 1) ff. 1r-156v; Scribe 2) ff. 157r-274r; Scribe 3, Laurence of Mechlin, wrote ff. 274r-317r and dated the codex 1452., Plain initials in red and rubrics throughout., and Binding: Fifteenth century. Original sewing on five slit, tawed straps laced into wooden boards. Endband cores laid in grooves. Covered with white, tawed skin, blind-tooled with a St. Andrew's cross within panel borders. The covering leather is sewn around the endbands, from spine to edges, with a back-stitch. Traces of round bosses, probably brass, and of two strap and pin fastenings, the pins on the upper board.

Description:
In Latin., Watermarks: similar to Briquet Lettre P 8606 and 8625., Script: Written by a single scribe in a neat running script for the text and a more formal style for rubrics., First initial on f. 1r, 10-line, painted blue, on red and green ground, yellow highlights. Many small plain initials in red and/or blue. Major headings lacking; minor rubrics and red initial strokes throughout., and Binding: 15th-16th centuries. Sewn and wound on five slit, tawed straps laced into oak boards and pegged or nailed. Kermes pink, braided endbands attached to primary ones sewn on hempen (?) cores laced into boards. Covered in brown calf, blind-stamped in a diamond pattern filled in with roses, fleurs-de-lis, eagles, and lions (?). Traces of five round bosses on each board and of three nails to attach a chain at the head of the lower board. Tongue-turn-ins. Two clasps on the upper board and stubs of pink, tawed straps held to the lower with metal plates. Remains of a title on parchment on the upper board. Numerous place markers, some vermilion leather, some very small Turk's head knots of leather or tawed skin. Rebacked.

In Latin., Script: copied by two hands: the main part is by hand A (the Celestine monk Jean Gerson, colophon on f. 119v) , who writes a small Gothica Cursiva Libraria, the evolution of which during the copying of the present book and especially its second section has been studied by Ouy ("Le Célestin", pp. 287-288); hand B, who uses a small Gothica Semitextualis Libraria (rarely adopting Textualis "a"), copied the tabula, the note on f. 119v (see below), most of the headings in art. 5, and the final texts on ff. 140v-141v; he also made a few corrections in the text copied by hand A. The very last text has been added by a third hand in tiny Gothica Cursiva Libraria., Headings, paragraph marks and heightening of the majuscules in red. Numerous 2-line (rarely 3-line) flourished initials in red with black penwork; in art. 4 the seven parts of the text in principle open with a similar initial with diagonal penwork spreads in the margin: ff. 23v (II), 49r (IV), 64v (V), 81v (VI), 103v (VII). The two principal texts open with a littera duplex in red and blue, with black penwork and marginal extension: ff. 4r (art. 2), 5 lines, and 120r (art. 5), 3 lines with diagonal penwork spreads., Running headlines in artt. 2-4 only: up to f.29r they consist of an indication of the page's content and, at right on the recto pages, also in the upper margin, the number of the part dealt with ("I", "II"); thereafter the number only is given., and Binding: contemporary parchment. On the flat spine and partly on the covers, a label with the handwritten 18th century inscription "Ancien / Manuscrit / sur **** / pr**** / Lo*****."

In Latin., Script: Written by several scribes in small gothic bookhand., One historiated initial, f. 1r, 6-line, beige with foliage serif, red, against blue ground with white filigree, containing an apothecary (unguentarius) mixing ingredients in a mortar with two pestles. Numerous flourished initials, 3- to 2-line, alternate in red with blue, and vice versa, or often plain initials in red or blue. Running headlines in red and blue. Paragraph marks, alternating red and blue, appear sporadically (ff. 1r-36v)., and Binding: Eighteenth century, Germany. Cream colored pigskin, blind-tooled. Gilt edges. Green and cream endbands. Description:
In Latin., Script: Copied by a single hand writing a small highly abbreviated Gothica Hybrida Libraria; exceptions are a few folios by other hands using the same type of script (ff. 1, 11-13, etc.), and the replacement leaves 28 and 35 written in Humanistica Cursiva Libraria/Currens. Lemmata in Northern Gothica Textualis Formata., Watermarks: spiked wheel, var. Briquet 13268; ox head, var. Briquet 14306. The upper outer corners damaged by moist in the second half of the codex., Alternately red and blue paragraph marks, with long vertical extensions when at the beginning of a line; alternately red and blue flourished initials (2- or 3-line) at the opening of the chapters; larger flourished initials with more developed penwork in the same colours, of course execution, on ff.1r (9 lines), 15r (7 lines), 60r (6 lines), 73r (6 lines), 99r (5 lines), 113r (5 lines). There are carefully executed logical diagrams in the text on ff. 100r-v, 115v,116v-117v (their inscriptions partly in Northern Gothica Textualis); diagrams are sketched in the margins of ff. 19r and 59r., and Binding: Original, thin wooden boards sewn on three thongs; the leather cover missing, replaced with mottled orange paper; rebacked with brown leather. Remnants of two red leather clasps attached to the front cover, with brass catches on the rear cover. The front endleaves are cut from large sheets of paper ruled with ink for two columns, mounted transversally (width of the leaf: 290 mm.; of the ruling 175 mm., intercol. space 30 mm.).

In Latin., Script: Written in a fine early gothic bookhand by several scribes, above top line., Nice penwork initials, 7- to 3-line, for each letter of the alphabet, blue with red or vice versa. Smaller initials, 2-line, in similar but less intricate designs for chapter divisions. Chapter numbers, some initials, plain line fillers, and text divisions in red. Ornamental border, in red, encloses common ending for verses on f. 1r-v. Spaces for rubrics left unfilled. Majuscules in text stroked with pale yellow., Beginning and end of codex worm and rodent damaged., and Binding: Date? Fragmentary binding. Resewn with a chain stitch and the spine lined with coarse cloth. In Latin., Script: Written in a rounded gothic bookhand, below top line; marginal annotations and finding aids by a contemporary hand in less formal script., 5 fine illuminated initials, 30- to 7-line, in blue or pink with white filigree on blue and red grounds framed in blue or red accentuated at the corners by gold dots. Infilled with intertwining or angular vines, some with biting head terminals, mauve or blue with white highlights and gold dots. Ascenders and descenders, red, mauve and blue terminating in spiralling serifs with biting animal heads or grotesques against cusped grounds. Two initials with vines issuing from upper and left corners, blue with white highlights ending in grotesques. 3- and 2-line calligraphic initials, red and blue with blue and red penwork. Plain initials alternating in red and blue. Headings in red; running titles (chapter numbers) alternating red and blue.
