"An allegorical design. Britannia, holding her shield and a cap of Liberty on a staff, rushes (right to left) with a calm expression to the edge of a cliff, urged on by Wellington and five other Ministers (scarcely characterized). On her right a man snatches the drapery from a small cloud-borne figure of Fortune with her wheel, who is directed towards an oval portrait of Queen Caroline supported by an angel. Fame holds a laurel wreath above the portrait. Below the cliff or rock from which Britannia steps so heedlessly is a patch of ground surrounded by sea. On this stands Burdett, holding out a scroll inscribed 'Magna Char[ta] Liberty of Napoleon' and holding out his left arm to prevent Britannia from falling. Justice stands behind him, holding evenly balanced scales. Four other men stand close behind him, one holding out a scroll inscribed 'Reform', and supporting the arm which holds the scales. A man in shirt-sleeves kneels at Burdett's feet, making a gesture of urgent entreaty. On a rock (right), symbolizing St. Helena but merging with Britannia's cliff, sits a spotted, sub-human Caliban-like creature, who holds a small image of Napoleon, which he is about to cover with an extinguisher. At the base of the rock, but in the background, are two tiny officers in military uniform, seated together at the edge of the sea, directed to the right. In the foreground (left) sits a woman (? France) in classical draperies, holding a sceptre, with a (? Bourbon) crown falling from her head, and with a second (? imperial) crown in her lap. She gazes towards St. Helena. "A satire on Cambridge. The interior of a large room showing two sash windows, through one of which (left) is seen part of the south side of the Senate House, through the other, the tower of St. Mary's Church, both drawn with topographical accuracy. Between the two windows is a niche in which is a statue of Athene holding her shield; in her outstretched left hand is held out a laurel wreath towards some men beneath her who have entered from a door on the right. Her owl sits beside her on the stump of a tree. Beneath the title is etched, "dedicated to the illustrious Inheritress of her fame in Professors of Arts & Sciences, the University of Cambridge O Matre pulchra Filia pulchrior!" Immediately below Athene, and concealing the lower part of her draperies a man stands on a high rostrum covered with a cloth. He wears a furred academic gown and bands, and holds out a rolled document in his right hand. Immediately below the rostrum a man, not in academic dress, is seated at a table writing. He is in profile to the right looking towards four men who have entered from the right through an open door, apparently 'professors of Arts and Sciences', whose names he is recording. The foremost of these is a dancing-master who stands holding a bow in his right hand, a kit or small fiddle in his left. Next is a rough-looking elderly man wearing a round hat and long coat. The other two are middle-aged, one holding his hat and a cane and accompanied by a dog. On the left, and behind the chair of the man writing, are two other 'professors'; a fencing-master, wearing a fencing-jacket, stands in back view, turning his head in profile to the right, his left arm raised, holding his foil horizontally. All wear loose jack-boots, spurred, and on each man's head is a brass utensil (or helmet), as made by the trade, and each carries a dish-cover (or shield) inscribed 'C R'. Many wear makeshift breastplates. They wear ragged breeches, some partly covered by strips of metal on the thigh, in imitation of armour. The two goose-stepping leaders blow coach-horns to which banners are attached, inscribed 'Blow Braziers Blow thy Sounding Horns'; their head-dress is a candlestick containing a tall lighted candle. They are followed by two trumpeters, with teakettles on their heads. Next comes a tall drummer, his drum inscribed 'Hum Drum', using ladles for drumsticks and with a coal-scuttle-helmet. "A large quasi-cylindrical Green Bag, see British Museum Satires No. 13735, stands at an angle with the ground like a mortar (and suggesting the Regent's Bomb, see British Museum Satires No. 12799), aimed at the Queen (left), who stands with right arm raised, left hand on breast, demonstrating innocence. Castlereagh touches it with a firebrand inscribed Lies, as if putting a match to a touch-hole; flames and papers shoot from the bag, but strike against the large shield, inscribed "Truth" and "Inocence," held by a woman in classical draperies, who is air-borne above the Queen, and raises the flaming sword Justice. She says fiercely: "Back to your Native Hell." She and the Queen are irradiated by a sun in the upper left corner. The flames are inscribed "Adultry" and "Charges"; the papers are "Evidence of the Baron Ompteda Lies &c" [see British Museum Satires No. 13745]; "Adultry with a servant" [Bergami]; "Charges." The blasts of flame strike on the shield and ricochet back against Castlereagh and his supporters, and downwards upon writhing serpents and a skull which have come out of the bag. These boomerang-flames are "Charges Repeld" and "Charges"; they terminate in great clouds of "Smoke." Behind Castlereagh (the only one who stands his ground, though alarmed) are Sidmouth holding his nose, (?) "Burdett, wearing armour, attacks a seven-headed monster, which guards the gate of the Treasury, a heavy door in a stone arch (left). On his shield is a St. George's Cross inscribed 'Bill of Rights' and 'Magna Charta'; at his feet is the word 'Independance' [cf. British Museum Satires No. 10732]. He says: "I will Stand up for the Rights of the People Or Perish in the Attempt". The monster has a scaly body, webbed and barbed wings, a barbed tail, and fierce talons; its seven serpent-like necks, terminating in human heads, are encircled by a collar inscribed 'Coruption' [in reversed characters). All spit at Burdett, three emit words: Perceval says: "I Perceive what hes Doing"; Croker says: "I begin to Croke"; a third, Lethbridge (identified by his words), says: "Bless me He makes my Hair stand on End like the Quills upon the fretfull Porcupine". His hair is standing up, and is flanked by two locks which suggest ass's ears. A profile resembles Windham; one head may be presumed to represent Yorke. Under the feet of the monster are three torn papers: 'Act of Habeas Corpus', 'Compact between the King and the People', 'Petition of Right'."--British Museum online catalogue

"Pitt (caricatured), dressed as Rolla, addresses a group of chieftains (left); the ranks of the Peruvian army with erect spears watch from the background. Below the (printed) title is printed Rolla's patriotic speech from 'Pizarro', II. ii, beginning 'My brave Associates', 'and ... we serve a Monarch whom we love . . .' (see British Museum Satires No. 9436). He stands with both arms outstretched, head turned in profile to the left, pointing rhetorically across the sea to the Spaniards, whom Sheridan (in this speech) equates with French republicans, and who are here represented by the Foxites. The Peruvians wear feathered head-dresses and feather kilts in the manner of Red Indians, except Dundas, who wears tartan and feathered head-dress. Dundas (caricatured) sits on the ground holding bow and shield, and looking with cunning scepticism at Pitt; he is the only one of the ministerial group of five who can be identified, though others may be presumed to be Grenville, Portland, and Windham."--British Museum online catalogue and From the printed British Museum catalogue: "(Description and comment from M. They are small comic figures headed by Fox, who urges them towards the water. The others (left to right) are Lauderdale with a flag, Derby with a shield, Bedford wearing a jockey cap, Erskine in wig and gown, Norfolk holding his Earl Marshal's staff, Tierney holding pistols (see BMSat 9218, &c), Burdett, and two unidentified figures. For Pizarro see BMSat 9396, &c. The scene is burlesqued and altered from the play, where it takes place in the Temple of the Sun. The patriotic speech of Rolla (cf. BMSat 9436) made the fortune of the play and was reprinted as a broadside or placard in 1803, see BMSat 9397."

"Satire on the jockeying for position of the European powers in early 1740. A race-course on the sea-shore with a variety of animals and riders representing different countries: first comes Cardinal Fleury (France) falling from his fox which has stumbled at the winning post on "[Baron] Sinclair's papers". Behind the fox stands the devil holding a sheet of paper with a picture of five ships, lettered "Baltic Sea", an allusion to the French failure to form an alliance in that region. The devil pulls down one of the scales hanging from the umpire stand; the heavier scale represents the Imperial allies with swords, coins, a picture of the Imperial eagle and a note reading "ballance of power", while the lighter one holds objects connected with France and Spain, a cardinal's hat, mask, fox, and notes of "50,000 livers" and "10,000 pistoles" as well as a paper lettered "Mediation". On the umpire stand, America is in conversation with Africa while Europe embraces Asia for the sake of "Protection [of]Trade". Further to the left stands Captain Jenkins holding out his severed ear. Behind Fleury's fox runs the Spanish wolf, its rider unseated by the British lion's lashing tail, lettered "No Search Free Trade". The Russian bear, ridden by a man with a scimitar, follows; the bear kicks its hind legs at the Turkish elephant that is draped with a cloth lettered "Belgrade" in reference to the recent ceding of that city to Turkey. The sultan stands behind the elephant, offering a bag of money to a Frenchman wearing a bag-wig; a monkey also wearing a bag-wig, representing France, crouches in front of the bear. A Dutchman, smoking a pipe, stands beside a distance post having abandoned the race; his boar is laden with trade goods. Behind, on the left, the devil and a fool lead a group of Roman Catholic bishops, roped together, towards a closed building labelled "Conclave" where they will elect a successor to Pope Clement XII. In front of them seven men representing the European powers are seated at a round table with papers lettered "Alliance" and "Sinclair"; Cardinal Fleury turns aside towards another devil asking, "Extricute me now & I'm yours for ever". Further forward, a British herald, supported by classical female soldiers, blows a trumpet; beside them Fleury raises the front of his robe attempting to catch billowing smoke, lettered "Universal Monarchy". In the foreground, Time sits on his hour-glass holding a paper with a picture of a wolf dressed as a cardinal; rats chew at the bottom of the sheet; Fortune looses her grasp of Theodore of Corsica who throws his orb after his crown as it flies off on outspread wings; a British bulldog savages a Spanish wolf while a French fox runs off behind a bush; Captain Coram shows the plan of the Foundling Hospital to a woman and child seated on the ground; a Catholic ecclesiastic wrings his hands saying, "Ye have taking away my Gods, what have I more"; a man bends down to lift a chest full of "10000 pieces of Eight"; Emperor Charles VI rides on an eagle towards the finishing post, holding a shield with the British coat of arms in front of him while a shield with the fleur-de-lis falls to the ground; he is preceded by Charles Albert of Bavaria, fully armed on horseback, and carrying a shield with the motto, "Never conquered"; in front of him, a French ambassador kneels pleading with the British lion who tramples on a shield with the fleur-de-lis and prepares to fire a cannon. At lower right, Britannia pushes aside France (a woman in classical dress with a helmet, and a cock at her side holding out a paper lettered "Mediation") and points to a map showing the island of Cuba offered by a British herald and a sailor. In the background, to left, is the bay of Cadiz in which the Spanish fleet is shut up, British ships sail freely on the sea; a nymph holding a pennant lettered, "Quatuor Maria Vindico" (I claim the four seas), rides a dolphin; beyond are the island of Cuba and distant mountains. "Pitt puts the Coalition to flight. He stands on the left, having just discharged an arrow from his bow, which pierces Fox (right) in the Achilles tendon. He says: "Thus do I strive with heart and hand To drive Sedition from the Land." Fox, prostrate and massive, supports himself on his hands to look at Pitt, saying: "There is nought but a place or a pension that will ease The Strain that I've got in my tendon Achilles." An elegantly dressed and coiffed woman, representing Britain, exchanges blows with the tatooed female America, naked but for a skirt of feathers and a feathered headdress. The first says "I'll force you to obedience you rebellious slut," as America answers "Liberty, liberty for ever Mother while I exist." In the left foreground a shield bearing a compass rose leans agains a tree which is shedding its leaves. A corresponding tree on the right has full foliage with a cap of liberty at its top, while the shield before it displays a pointing hand on which stands a rooster. Ribbons below the British and American shields are titled, respectively, "For obedience" and "For liberty".

The three assailants are much caricatured and all wear armour; Burke, grotesquely thin and like some malignant insect, wears a Jesuit's biretta (cf. British Museum Satires No. 6026). He somewhat resembles the Don Quixote of British Museum Satires No. 7678, &c, cf. also British Museum Satires No. 7158; a wallet of 'Charges' is slung across his shoulder, bare feet project from the greaves which cover his legs. "William IV, as Mars, in Roman armour, stands defiantly in a war-chariot drawn by three galloping horses, ridden by Discord, a virago with serpents for hair, who brandishes a handful of serpents. He holds a shield inscribed 'Signed Protocols', and a levelled spear; on his helmet is a dragon with gaping jaws. The chariot advances upon terrified Dutch soldiers (left), who flee; one drops his musket, but one on the extreme left (William I) stands firm beside the muzzle of a cannon and glares at the King with an obstinate scowl. They have high-crowned hats, with a ribbon inscribed 'Orange'. Facing the chariot-horses (left) are a menacing Russian bear and a Prussian Death's Head hussar with a levelled blunderbuss. Discord, looking sideways at the Prussian though turning away from him, says: 'A word in your Ear! there's nothing meant, its all show just to frighten these Dutchmen a little'. Under the chariot is a document inscribed 'Treatys'; the wheel is about to collide with a large stone inscribed 'Ireland', on which the features of O'Connell are faintly suggested. Behind the chariot are three Furies, with serpents for hair, and holding firebrands and bunches of serpents. Rushing forward, they urge the King on; they are (left to right) Grey, Durham, and Brougham. As a background to the chariot a swarm of countless frogs (French soldiers) is dimly suggested; they rush forward, with a tricolour flag. On the front of the chariot perches a Gallic cock. In the foreground (right) stands John Bull, stout and spectacled; he clutches his 'Reform Bill', and gapes up in horror, saying, 'Hey dey here's a bobbery, just as I was going to look over my Reform Bill quietly, what do they mean not to go to war sure now,!! after suffering Poland to be annihilated & Germany trampled on, Oh nonsense! Abstract:
"A satire on Cambridge. The interior of a large room showing two sash windows, through one of which (left) is seen part of the south side of the Senate House, through the other, the tower of St. Mary's Church, both drawn with topographical accuracy. Between the two windows is a niche in which is a statue of Athene holding her shield; in her outstretched left hand is held out a laurel wreath towards some men beneath her who have entered from a door on the right. Her owl sits beside her on the stump of a tree. ... Immediately below Athene, and concealing the lower part of her draperies a man stands on a high rostrum covered with a cloth. He wears a furred academic gown and bands, and holds out a rolled document in his right hand. Immediately below the rostrum a man, not in academic dress, is seated at a table writing. He is in profile to the right looking towards four men who have entered from the right through an open door, apparently 'professors of Arts and Sciences', whose names he is recording. The foremost of these is a dancing-master who stands holding a bow in his right hand, a kit or small fiddle in his left. Next is a rough-looking elderly man wearing a round hat and long coat. The other two are middle-aged, one holding his hat and a cane and accompanied by a dog. On the left, and behind the chair of the man writing, are two other 'professors'; a fencing-master, wearing a fencing-jacket, stands in back view, turning his head in profile to the right, his left arm raised, holding his foil horizontally.
