"An election mob in which Townshend and his supporters, as butchers, are violently attacking the populace with cleavers and marrow-bones. They wear aprons with butchers' steels dangling from the waist. George Hanger (right), his hat decorated with three ostrich feathers and the coronet of the Prince of Wales, raises a cleaver in both hands and threatens two constables with staves who fall backwards, wounded or terrified. He is in violent action, one foot rests on the unconscious body of a sailor whose face is gashed and bleeding. In the sailor's hand is a flag with a ship and the words 'Royal Navy'; on this Townshend, who uses his marrow-bone and cleaver as a musical instrument, not as weapons, is trampling. Behind Hanger, Fox, climbing above the crowd, is violently smashing the sign of 'The King's Head' (a bust portrait of the King) which is over a door inscribed 'Martin'. In the foreground a woman half-lying on the ground tries to protect her screaming infant from a cleaver and bone brandished by Sheridan. On the extreme left Lord Derby attacks a kneeling sailor with a wooden leg. Behind Sheridan, Burke raises a cleaver in both hands, and behind him the Duke of Norfolk waves a flag inscribed 'Townsend and Liberty'. Behind is a dense crowd brandishing cleavers and bones, while others attempt to escape. Another stream has almost reached London, which is directly in front of the mountain and is represented by St. Paul's and the gateway of St. James's Palace. In order to avert the calamity a ramshackle procession advances in the foreground from the right. Sheridan, as a cardinal, walks in profile to the left, holding up the head of Fox in both hands. His hat has the crown of a bonnet-rouge. His tattered robes are held up by two train-bearers, the diminutive M. A. Taylor and Lord Derby; their rents reveal a bare thigh and ill-gartered stockings over bare feet. Beside Sheridan walks a dog with a human profile, Grafton, as in BMSat 8457. [Identified by Wright and Evans as General Fox, who was serving with distinction in Flanders.] In front of Sheridan walks Lauderdale, carrying bell, book ('Lauderdale's Jests', a paper emerging from his pocket), and candle (a conspirator's lantern). The contents are the Opposition: Fox (three-quarter length), the largest figure, is sliding in; he clutches the long forelock of Burdett, who with Tierney is just behind him, and still in the cart. He looks despairingly at Pitt, who stands (right) in profile to the left, in surplice and bands, and pointing down the pit. Pitt reads from his open book: 'With a sincere hope that none of you will ever rise again, I commit you all to the Pit-hole!' Sheridan is about to fall in head first. Behind, and towering above Burdett and Tierney (who are comparatively self-controlled), is Erskine in wig and gown, holding a 'Brief', his arms raised in terrified supplication. On his left is the profile of Bedford (right) wearing a jockey-cap. The large head of the tiny Lord Derby is in the back left corner of the cart. "An altered copy of British Museum Satires No. 10389. The two principal figures are substantially the same, but Mrs. Fitzherbert's expression is less subtle; she looks down at her charge with an exulting smile. The feathers in her hair are set in a fillet inscribed 'Ich Dien', her breasts are almost bare, her drapery is more swirling. Her pouch is inscribed 'Amusements for Young Minds', its contents differ, and her book is a 'Missal'. Above them (left) ls inscribed: 'Angels ever bright and fair" Take, Oh Take me to thy Care,"'. The altar is larger and closer to the ascending figures. In place of the Virgin, the Prince of Wales (half length) stands behind it, looking down at the 'Guardian-Angel'. On the altar, which is inscribed 'Sanctum Sanctorum' is an irradiated chalice. The attendant cherubs are (left) Derby, (?) Grey, Grenville; and (right) Norfolk, Burdett, and Windham. Two cherubs have descended from the circle (right) and look fixedly at close range towards the child; they are Fox and Sheridan. The rays are inscribed: 'Bulls', 'Dispensations', 'Indulgences', 'Luxuries', 'Consecrations', 'Cannonizations', 'Remissions', 'Pardons', 'Beatifications', 'Permissions'.
