- "General Theobald Dillon (three-quarter length) is being murdered by French soldiers, ruffianly fellows, most of whom wear cocked hats with a tricolour cockade. He is pierced with many bayonets, and his throat is cut; his head is dragged backwards by a man who grasps his hair in hands and teeth. He puts up an arm crying, "oh le Pauvre Dillon". A man with sabre raised to slash again, says, "Encore Encore." Two of the men say "Ca-ira". - "Custine stands on the scaffold beside the guillotine (left). Four ragged ruffians are about to bind him to the plank on which he is to lie; one says, "By Gar so we will serve all de Generals who do not conquer de whole World, and give them de Libertè". Custine says, "Pardon me Heaven for having been leagued with such a set of Blood hounds". A stout soldier pushes a weeping priest, who says "Let us Pray", down the steps (right) which lead up to the scaffold, saying, "Go to de diable & Your Prayers both". Below (right) stand republican soldiers with fixed bayonets much caricatured. On the extreme left a man kneels at the guillotine holding his hat in place of the usual basket; he says, "Begar I will have a Drink of de blood.""--British Museum online catalogue

- "A mounted officer with drawn sabre heads a procession of 'Volunteers' linked by a chain to his horse and to each other. The horse is a well-bred animal with handsome trappings, but the rider is lean and has torn breeches. He is followed by a file of three whose necks are attached to the horse and whose hands or arms are pinioned. All are miserable wretches, barelegged and ragged; the last, less abject, has sabots and takes snuff. He is chained to the neck of a donkey on whose back is a pannier containing three despairing conscripts. To the animal's tail is tied a low truck on which a moribund shackled man lies on his back, his knees drawn up. To the truck is chained, in a stooping position, a man whose hands are tied behind his back, his nails being long talons. Birds, scenting carrion, fly towards the procession. - Abstract:
- "Napoleon, scarcely caricatured, stands in the centre of the design, pointing with left forefinger to a pile of cannon-balls in the right foreground inscribed 'Forse, meat Balls for the Lads of Paris'. Just behind him, and emerging from clouds, stand the Devil (left) and Death (right), directing his actions. Napoleon is flanked by two much taller supporters: an Italian brigand holding up a pole inscribed 'Plunder' to which a limp purse is tied, and with a pistol in his left hand. On the right is a savage dishevelled butcher, holding up a knife, with a noose in the right hand. Both wear belted tunics. These three are identified by an inscription below the design: 'Capt of Starved Banditty from the Alps, Ad Camp,, The Aghast Emperor & his two Friends & Pillars of the State,, Butcher from Elba. Generalissimo'. All are dominated by a larger figure, emerging from clouds above Napoleon's head, which has a scaly body and streaming hair, styled 'Deamon of War Presideing over the Tyrant'. His extended right hand points to the words 'Boundless Ambition' in large letters on a background of fire and lightning of which he is the centre. In his left hand is the shaft of a pennant inscribed: 'We, Come, to Redres:s Grievances'. Dark clouds and lightning extend left and right over ranks of soldiers in the middle distance who watch Napoleon. Those on the right are a ragged, dilapidated, and motley crew, some with pitchforks; they shout "Vive la Empre . . . [sic]" and "Vive la Boun. . . ." - A view of the interior of a busy French barracks shows a more domestic than military atmosphere although weapons and other gear adorn the walls and lay scattered on the floor. The scene includes a woman nursing a baby (right) as another child plays at her feet. Beside her another woman holds up a mirror so that an officer can admire his reflection from both the front and back. A third woman (left) cuts an officers toe nails as a barber dresses his long queue; another officer has his hair powdered. In the background a man in his night shirt sits on the side of his bed as he stretches his arms and yawns
