Bates', and a stop for coaches on the road to London; in foreground a large woman enters a coach, the man to her left helps her in with a hand on her round backside, a man with a protruding belly stands waiting, behind him a boy holds out a hat for tips; to the left a refreshment seller yells out advertising her goods, two drunken guests lean out from a window above with a pipe and a horn, and two figures embrace in the doorway below, the watchdog lies asleep in his kennel on the right; a crowd of election campaigners at the far end of the inn."--British Museum online catalogue

The fishwives stalls are in the foreground with the masts of ship vessels behind, and among them one tall smoking funnel. The market buildings are on the right. The foreground is more crowded than in other Billingsgate prints. The chief feature is an irate woman seated on an upturned tub beside her stall, berating a lady in a riding-habit who holds a huge fish's head. Beside the latter is another lady, disconcerted. Two liveried servants are amond the crowd. Lady Caroline Lamb and a young marchioness, both 'in disguise', go to the market to hear the traditional language of the fishwives, this Lady Caroline provokes by disparaging a fish. On the left is a fashionably dressed young man, resembling R.C. On the left, a drunken woman sits with her glass raised. From British Museum catalogue

An infant chimney-sweep or 'climbing boy' has climbed up her petticoats and sits astride on their lateral projection. A larger chimney-sweep is about to climb up, putting one foot on his sack of soot. A cloaked market-woman, smoking a pipe, stands under the shelter, as does a man in the dress of a naval officer. A sailor, wearing trousers, his arms folded, appears to be dancing a hornpipe under the shelter of the hat. In the background (right) a lady walks (right to left) holding up a small umbrella which shelters only a minute part of her enormous hat which extends far beyond her projecting breast and petticoats.
