Charles Gounod's opéra-comique Le médecin malgré lui, with a libretto by Jules Barbier and Michel Carré, based on Molière's play, was first performed in 1858. For a revival at the Festival Français in Monte Carlo, Serge Diaghilev commissioned recitatives by Satie to replace original spoken dialogue. A final vocal octet was adapted by Georges Auric from Gounod's quintet in act three.
