He grew up in Butte, Montana and many of his most noted works, including Singermann (1929), Wide Open Town (1931), and The Sisters (1937), were set in Montana. As an adult, Brinig lived in Taos, New Mexico and in New York City. He died in New York on May 13, 1991.
