Harewood U.S.A. General Hospital,, Hospital Number, 20,224., R. B. BONTECOU,, Richard Ives, Private, Co. B, 189th N.Y. Vols., aged 33, was admitted to Harewood U.S.A. Gen'l Hospital, April 2nd, 1865, suffering from gun shot wound, the ball entering over middle of superior edge of scapula; extracted near the middle of left scapula; left scapula fractured and right injured. Wounded, March 29th, 1865, at the battle of Hatcher's Run, Va. On admission, the condition of injured parts and constitutional state of patient were tolerably good, did tolerably well up to April 20th, 1865, from that date the parts became gangrenous, gangrene extending the whole length of wound. The patient steadily sank, and died, May 16th, 1865, from exhaustion., Richard Ives., and Surgeon U.S. Vols., In Charge.

Fritz Siebe, private, Co. D, 139th N.Y. Vols., aged 23, admitted to Harewood U.S.A. Gen'l Hospital, June 18, 1864, suffering from gunshot wound of abdomen, ball entering right anterior side, below the 10th rib, emerging behind, and about 1 1/2 inches from spine. Wounded June 3, 1864, at the battle of Cold Harbor, Va. On admission, the patient was in a very feeble condition; the discharge from the wound consisted of feces, mixed with greenish streaks from the ascending colon and liver; complained of pain in abdomen, increased by pressure; discharge per rectum, scanty. Treatment, cold water dressing over the abdomen, opium internally, and light, nourishing diet. July 1—pain in abdomen diminished, but discharge the same; July 15—patient complains of occasional colic pain; August 1—patient improving; discharge the same up to August 15, but from that date the patient began to improve. September 1—the wound of exit healed; discharge consisting of a thin yellowish serum. September 14—wound entirely healed; colic pain, now and then recurring, but able to be about. Harewood U.S.A. General Hospital,, Hospital Number 20,713., John White, Private Co. A., 4th N.Y. Vols., age 19, was admitted to Harewood U.S.A. General Hospital, April 12th, 1865, with gunshot wound of the upper third of the left thigh. The ball entered posteriorly, passed upwards and inwards impinging against the femur, denuding a small portion of it of its periosteum, and lodged beneath the vastus externus muscle. The wound was received at Fort Fisher April 2nd, 1865, and was caused by the conoidal ball. The ball was extracted by Surg, R. B. Bontecou, April 17th 1865; the patient being under the influence of chloroform. The condition of the injured parts and the constitutional state of the patient at the time of the operation were poor. Pyaemic symptoms were developed April 19th, and the patient gradually sank, dying, April 27, 1865., John White., R. B. BONTECOU,, and Surgeon U.S. Vols., In Charge.

Henry Krowlow, Private, Co. A, 66th N.Y. Vols., aged 18, was admitted to Harewood U.S.A. Gen'l Hospital, April 5th, 1865, suffering from gun shot wound of right leg, the extent of injury unknown. Wounded, March 31st, 1865, at the battle of Petersburgh, Va. Amputation at right knee joint, antero-posterior flaps, on the field, April 1st, 1865, operator unknown. The condition of injured parts and constitutional state of patient at time of operation unknown, but on admission to this hospital they were tolerably good. Patient did very well for awhile, the stump improving, but suffering from erysipelas of the face. The stump soon afterwards became gangrenous, the disease destroying the soft parts. Hospital Oct. 7th, 1864, with amputated left thigh, lower third. The wound was received Sept. 3Oth, 1864, near Petersburg, Va.; nature of missile not positively known, but supposed to have been the conoidal ball. The patient states that the ball passed through the knee-joint. On the 29th of March, 1865, a sequestrum measuring about six inches, was drawn from the end of the stump. Daniel Rich, Co, B, 55th Pennsylvania Vols., aged 21 years, wounded at the battle of Pocotoligo, Oct. 22nd and admitted to Hospital No. 1, Beaufort, S.C., Oct. 24th, 1862, with gunshot wound of the chest, the ball entering at the sterno-clavicular articulation of the right side, and lodging in one of the upper dorsal vertebræ producing paralysis. He spit blood in small quantities at the moment of injury, but walked to the place of embarkation, a distance of five or six miles. He was obliged to lie on his back, and had lost power in both arms, to some extent., DANIEL RICH., Dec. 1st, 1862. Rich has been walking around the ward since the 20th of November, and complains only of a feeling of stiffness in his spine and upper extremities. He walks as if all the parts above the pelvis were ossified together. Yesterday a small piece of bone came out of the opening over the sternum, it was evidently a portion of the sternum, and was of the size of a ten cent piece. The three openings discharge but little, and are filled with very flabby granulations, which were penciled with argent. nitras. A cerate cloth is kept to the wounds., Dec. 20th. Rich has been doing very well since last report, sitting up much of the time, and occasionally walking about the room. Erysipelatous inflammation appeared to day on the chest., Dec. 27th. The erysipelas has successively invaded chest, left arm, shoulder and back, but is now disappearing. Very little discharge from the wounds, which are, however, not
healed. There still remains an immobility of the spine and arms, which prevents him helping himself much., Dec. 28th. Sent to northern hospital, per steamer "Star of the South.", Nov. 18th. The poultice was discontinued yesterday, and cerate dressings ordered. He can now move his arms somewhat, and sits up an hour or two daily. Cough disappeared suddenly, a week since. I think it was when he first set up, and thus allowed the matter to run out that this symptom disappeared. Discharge is now very slight and healthy., Nov. 25th, Excitement of vascular system less, the medicine had sickened him, and acted on the bowels. A poultice was ordered and medicine to be continued, with low diet. Decuhitus dorsal and arms laying by his side helpless, or rather unable to move them without pain in the shoulder, his spine seems perfectly rigid and in being raised to take his food which he does in a chair, he allows no one to touch him anywhere but the head, and thus as a stick, is lifted into the upright position. The cervical vertebræ are tender to the touch as are also the upper dorsal vertebræ., Nov. 26th. Much in same condition, antimony continued, low diet and poultice to wound., Oct. 27th. Respiration easy; pulse nearly natural; wound suppurating. Antimony discontinued, and ordered half diet, he feeling hungry. Continued in much the same condition until 31st inst., when the soft parts covering the upper part of the sternum had become red and fluctuated quite distinct. The discharge could, with some difficulty, be forced out of the wound on the left side, but did not do so without assistance. I therefore made a free incision in this, and gave the discharge vent. An opening into the chest through the sternum was apparent to the finger introduced through the wound. He being a little feverish again, spts. mindererus was ordered, 3 ss, every three hours. A coarse rattle annoyed him very much, but subsided under that treatment. The new wound, as well as the others, discharges freely, good pus, and he is doing well at this date, 4th, but the stiffness of spine and inability to move the arms remain., and When admitted here, his face was flushed and dusky, coarse rhales were audible in his bronchia, and accelerated pulse, evidently some inflammatory mischief going on in the lungs or bronchia. Ordered tart. ant., 1/8 gr. every four hours; low diet, and wet dressings to wound. I did not deem it advisable to bleed, as his wound, he said, had bled much ever since his injury.

Vols, age 18, admitted to Harewood U.S. General Hospital, April 19th 1865, from City Point, with shell wound of posterior, aspect of middle third of left thigh, received at Southside Rail Road Va., April 1st 1865. The treatment has been supporting with simple dressings to the wound. The progress has been favorable throughout. May 26, the patient is still in Hospital and doing well., R. B. Gen'l Hospital, April 2nd, 1865, suffering from gun shot wound of right side, the ball entering at ninth rib passing upwards and making its exit over sixth rib, injuring soft parts. Wounded, March 26th, 1865, at the battle of Petersburgh, Va. On admission, the condition of injured parts and constitutional state of patient were good.
