"Sir Francis Burdett, scarcely caricatured, is being drawn (r. to left.) by his supporters in his carriage towards the hustings, past a densely packed and cheering mob. He bows gracefully, his tricorne (with a tricolour cockade) under his arm. On the three panels of the barouche are depicted (1) a bird with an olive-branch, and the scroll 'Egalité'; (2) a hand emerging from flames holding up a fire-brand, with a scroll, 'The Torch of Liberty') a frothing tankard on which is a bust portrait of 'Buonaparte', the scroll 'Three Pence a Pot'. The first and third panels have the motto the 'Peace &\ Plenty'. The driver is Horne Tooke; he flourishes his whip over the heads of his team, and smokes a long pipe. In his hat are a tricolour cockade and a blue and orange (buff) favour. From his pocket issues a stream of election literature, part of which has reached the ground: 'Speeches for Sir Fra[ncis] on ye Hustings'; 'Hints'; 'Speech from the Hustings'; 'Speeches for the Crown & Anchor Dinner'; 'Sir Fra[ncis's] Address to the Mob'; 'Bills for all the Pissing Posts [cf. BMSat 9886]; 'Hints for the Democra[tic] Newspapers'; 'Sir Francis's Patriotic Speech on the Defence of the Country' [see BMSat 10054]; Bills for Hackney Coaches'; 'Important Fact - Pitt the Supporter of Justices'; 'No Begging Candidate'; 'No Squinting Representative'; 'A Squeese for the Contractors.' The last lies besides a dog over whose body the hind-wheel passes makine a wound from which guineas are pouring. Its collar is inscribed 'A Cur-tis' (Sir W. Curtis, a contractor, cf. BMSat 7676, was one of Mainwaring's chief supporters). Behind the carriage, in place of footmen, stand Sheridan Erskine, and Tierney. Sheridan, a favour inscribed 'no Govr Aris' in his hat, holds up a fringed pictorial banner, inscribed 'Governor Aris [the name almost obliterated] in all his Glory': Pitt violently scourges Britannia, whose hands are confined in a pillory. Erskine (in wig and gown) holds up a banner 'The Good-Old Cause' (a republican slogan of the seventeenth century), surmounted by a cap of Liberty with a tricolour cockade. Tierney holds up a huge key tied to a pole and labelled 'No Bastille'. Ten or more men drag the carriage by ropes; the wheelers are Fox as a ragged chimney-sweeper with a brush under his arm, and Norfolk, wearing a striped shirt and an apron and mopping his forehead. In front of these are Derby, as a jockey, and Lansdowne. The next pair are the Duke of Bedford as a farmer in a smock and (?) the Duke of Northumberland, wearing an apron. "A reception given by Mr. and Mrs. Fox to various groups of the Opposition, [With one or two exceptions the identifications are those of Miss Banks; the characterization is excellent, and most are unmistakeable.] in which the arrangement has political and social significance. Three Grenvilles bow to the host and hostess; the Marquis of Buckingham, wearing his ribbon, holding hat and gold-headed cane and showing a gouty leg and foot, bends low. Next is Lord Grenville, clasping his hat to his breast, more ingratiating but less obsequious than his brother. Next is the stout Lord Temple, awkwardly imitating his uncle's gesture. Fox, wearing a sword, returns Buckingham's bow, his hand on his heart; on his right. stands the fat Mrs. Fox, curtseying, and ogling Grenville. She holds a fan on which is a profile portrait of 'Napoleone Ist'; from her pocket projects a flask of 'French Brandy', indicative of her antecedents (cf. BMSats 7370, 10589) as well as her sympathies, cf. BMSat 9892). On the extreme right. is the Prince of Wales, in back view, the greater part of his figure cut off by the margin, but unmistakable. From his pocket projects a paper: 'Henry IV. Sc. I [sic] Pr of W -l know you all, & shall . . . while.' A short fat man gazes up at him admiringly, obsequiously amused; he is identified by Miss Banks as 'Mr [i.e. General] Fitzpatrick', but resembles M. A. Taylor. Beside him is a dog, his collar inscribed 'Tommy Tattle' [? Thomas Tyrwhitt]. Mrs. Fitzherbert sits, in semi-state, in the corner of a sofa, holding a fan on which are the Prince's feathers and 'Ich Dien'; she is about to take a ticket, 'Coalition Masquerade', proffered with ingratiating vivacity by Lord Carlisle. Next Carlisle behind the sofa stands the Duke of Clarence, facing the Prince, and cruelly caricatured. Mrs. Jordan takes his right. arm, but is reading Jobson & Nell [characters in 'The Devil to pay] with the Farce of Equality' [see BMSat 7908, &c.]. Behind the pair are Col. McMahon, sly and furtive, and a large man, resembling the Duke of York. [Identified by Miss Banks as 'Mr. Tyrwitt', but Tommy Tyrwhitt was noted for his small size. ] Behind Mrs. Fitzherbert, Erskine, in wig and gown, delightedly holds up a large paper (the words partly obscured): 'Arraignments for the new Broad-Bottom'd Administration [cf. "The 'Gods', Hawkesbury, Addington, St. Vincent, lean down from the clouds to defend the 'Treasury' against the assault of the 'Giants', different groups of the Opposition forming a pyramid in the lower, and larger, part of the design. [These identifications are those of Miss Banks (on a B.M. print) confirmed by Lord Holland, who omits Lord Spencer but adds Tierney, called by Miss Banks 'no particular person'. The identifications of Wright and Evans are in several cases incorrect. Grego substitutes Lord Mulgrave for Dr. Lawrence (or Spencer) and omits Spencer and others. Lord Holland notes that only the portraits of Pitt, Addington, Fox, Norfolk, Buckingham, Grenville, and Derby are like their subjects.] These are grouped on rocks, and are naked or nearly so (with one exception). At the apex of the pyramid are Pitt and Dundas, smaller and less dangerous than Fox in the foreground (left). Pitt, much emaciated, stands with legs astride, looking up, and about to hurl a large bundle of papers: 'Knock-down Arguments'; two similar bundles lie at his feet: 'Death and Eternal Sleep' [cf. BMSat 8350], and 'Coup de Grace'. He wears a military cocked hat, jack-boots, and a sword-belt from which hangs a sabre, indicating his volunteer activities (see BMSat 10113, &c); round his loins is a girdle of grapes and vine-leaves (cf. BMSat 8798). Melville (Dundas), behind and below Pitt, raises a sword inscribed 'True Andrew-Ferrara' and a shield; he wears a Scots bonnet; a tartan plaid and kilt adorn his burly nudity. At Pitt's feet stands Wilberforce, a dwarf, holding a large volume, Duty of Man, and directing upwards a fountain which can never approach the clouds. On the lower part of this rock stands Canning, in an attitude like that of Pitt, prepared to hurl a bulky sheaf of papers: 'Killing Detections'; he registers sly amusement, and wears a girdle of feathers suggestive of a Red Indian. From behind the rock appear two shadowy figures, each with the pen in his mouth that indicates a Treasury secretary; one prepares to hurl a bundle of 'Charges', the other, below him, has a bundle of 'Long Charges'. They are Rose and Long, ex-Treasury secretaries, see BMSat 9722. In the foreground (left) is a lower rocky platform on which the obese Buckingham and his burly brother Lord Grenville hold up Fox by the legs. Fox, bulky and hairy, fires a blast of flame, smoke, and bullets from a blunderbuss', doing more execution than all the others together. He is completely nude; drapery hangs from the shoulders of his two supporters, and the pompous Buckingham wears spectacles and Garter ribbon. All register satisfaction, rather than ardour like the Pittites. Beside their rock, and on the extreme left are supporters of Fox: Norfolk with a kettle-drum slung from his neck on which he is performing with two wine-bottles (cf. BMSat 9261). Behind him is Carlisle, banging a marrow-bone on a cleaver inscribed 'Coalition Roast Beef' [reminiscent of the Foxite butchers at Westminster elections]. The profile of Burdett is on the extreme left; he wears a hat on which is a ribbon: 'no Bastile' [see BMSat 9878, &c], and holds a fringed banner on which are equally balanced scales and the motto 'In hoc Signo Vinces' [cf. BMSat 10416]; on its spear-point is poised a cap of liberty terminating in the bell that indicates Folly. Behind him an arm holds up a trumpet to which is attached a banner inscribed 'Honor Property Ability' [symbolic of the Whig oligarchy and stressing the gulf between Foxites and the supposedly levelling Burdett]. ..."--British Museum online catalogue.

"A burlesqued illustration of the quotation from 'Paradise Lost' etched below the design ... In the upper left corner of the design, and in the background, an aged St. Peter holds open a small arched door, putting one of his three massive keys into the lock. The irradiated doorway is 'Popish Supremacy'; through it is seen a table, also irradiated, spread with loaves, fishes (cf. BMSat 10697), and wine. A golden staircase receding in perspective ascends in a curve to the door from the summit of the globe, on which 'Ireland' (the more conspicuous) and 'England' are marked. A procession of petitioners winds up the globe from the lower margin of the design; its leaders have begun to ascend the stairs but have been struck by three mighty blasts of wind. These issue from the mouths of Pitt, Hawkesbury (just below), and Sidmouth (considerably lower) Their profile heads emerge from dark clouds on the extreme left. The blasts have overthrown the leading petitioners: Grenville, in bishop's robes, staggers back with outstretched arms, his crozier and mitre fall, and the Catholic Petition blows from his hands, tattered by the wind, in a stream of 'popish' objects which slants upwards across the design. Immediately behind him, full face, the spectacled Buckingham staggers backward. He is dressed as a monk. In front of the two brothers Moira has fallen on his back on the third stair, kicking wildly, his upright l. leg expressing his characteristic stiff rigidity. He wears a surplice over regimentals and spurred boots, and his sword has broken. He has dropped the halter of the Irish bull on which sits Fox, dressed as a cardinal, the central figure of the design. The bull, snorting flames, rears violently, throwing Fox back into a horizontal position. Round its neck is a tricolour ribbon inscribed 'Order of St Patrick', from which hangs a medal with a profile of 'Buonaparte'; on its head is a bunch of shamrock. Fox is a Papal Legate; he is about to fall, and drops his triple cross to which is attached a tattered tricolour banner, inscribed 'Catholic Emancipa[tion']. His cardinal's hat flies off; from his left hand blows a document with many seals: 'Hierarchical Powers of ye Legate-Cardinal Volpone'. Mrs. Fitzherbert, a Mother Abbess, has fallen headlong from the stairs on to the globe. Her r. hand is on Ireland, resting on an open book: ' . . by the Brighton Abbess System of Education for the benefit of Protestant Children'; her left wrist is on England. "A travesty of Peters's 'An Angel carrying the Spirit of a Child to Paradise', exhibited R.A. 1783, in which the angel is a portrait of Isabella, Duchess of Rutland, and the figures have a background of clouds. Mrs. Fitzherbert, as the angel, flies upwards, her right. arm caressingly round a little girl, her left. pointing up to an irradiated and burlesqued altar, surrounded with cherub's heads, which recede in aerial perspective from the lower heads, which are fully characterized, to the upper ones, which are small. These angels are (l.) Windham, Grenville, Grey, Erskine, Grattan, and a (tiny and unrecognizable) Lord Holland. On the r. are Sheridan, Norfolk, Fox, Burdett, and Derby. [These identifications are by Lord Holland. They are self-evident, except Grattan who resembles Carlisle, or Jekyll, and has a profile completely unlike other portraits and caricatures. Wright and Evans give Stanhope for Windham and Carlisle for Grattan. Lord Holland is not characterized, and the identification can rest only on Gillray's statement.] The altar is lit by four large and guttering candles; over it, stiff and grotesque, are a Virgin and Child, 'La Sainte Veirge' [sic]. The head and hands of a demon emerge from a chalice which is flanked by vases of flowers. Three books surround the altar each open at a print: the Pope holding his cross and wearing a tiara; the many-headed Beast of Revelation (cf. BMSat 5534, &c); and a grotesque rendering of the Saint-Esprit, or dove of Pentecost. The rays, which descend towards Mrs. Fitzherbert, are inscribed 'Indulgences', 'Absolutions', 'Luxuries', 'Absolutions', 'Dissipations'. Mrs. Fitzherbert is a stout figure, whose realism is burlesqued by outspread wings and floating draperies. In her hair are three large plumes, emblem of the Prince of Wales; a cross hangs from her neck, a rosary flies outward. A large pouch inscribed 'Play-Things' is attached to her waist: from this hang a lighted censer and a rosary; from it project the head of a saint (burlesqued), a calvary in a bottle, a book: 'Brighton Breviary', a monstrance, St. Andrew holding his cross, a bunch of leaves. Mrs. Fitzherbert registers determined fanaticism; the little girl, childish devotion. They ascend between dark douds. "A sequel to BMSat 10540. George III, as a farmer in a smock, drives his pigs, now very plump, out of his farmyard and down a cliff into a turbulent sea. They have burst through a rotten paling; the foremost are struggling in huge waves, the last, the reluctant Sheridan, is propelled by the farmer's boot. The King says: "O you cursed ungrateful Grunters! - what, after devouring more in a twelve-month, than the good old Litter did in twelve years, you turn round to kick and bite your old Master! but if the Devil or the Pope has got possession of you all - pray get out of my Farm yard! - out with you all - no hangers behind! - you're all of a cursed bad-breed; so out with you altogether!!!" Behind him is the old sow in front of a thatched hovel, backed by trees. Among pigs who have already reached the sea is Howick, on his back on a billowing wave; beside him floats a paper: 'Repeal of the Test Act'. Behind him the head of Lord Holland looks up wistfully. Lord Grenville is carried downwards, one forefoot on a paper: 'Emancipation of the Catholic Army and Navy', while the (torn) 'Catholic Bill' floats before him. His body is covered with a distended skin of guineas, in reference to his two highly paid offices, see BMSat 10543, &c. Next, the hind-legs and vast rump of Lord Temple project from the water; beside him is a paper: 'Last Stake of the Broad Bottom Family', see BMSat 10721. Beside him is an almost submerged barrel of 'Whitbread's Entire' [see BMSat 10421], from which project the hind-legs of the drowning Whitbread. Next behind these, and about to plunge into the waves, are Lord St. Vincent, wearing a naval coat, Buckingham in spectacles and Garter ribbon, Bedford (Lord-Lieutenant of Ireland), from whose neck falls a ribbon inscribed 'Erin-Go-Bragh'. Just behind St. Vincent and Buckingham are Windham, Fitzpatrick (on his back), and Petty; next above these: the Duke of Norfolk, Erskine wearing his Chancellor's wig, Lauderdale, his body covered with tartan, and Spencer, with Moira close behind Bedford. The latest pigs to leave the ground are Ellenborough in his wig, Courtenay, Sidmouth, Derby, Carlisle, and Tierney; a little apart from the others Sheridan (cf. BMSat 10697), his body covered with Harlequin's chequered coat (cf. BMSat 9916), still has his hind-legs on the edge of the cliff. Portions of six other pigs appear in the mélée. "John Bull crouches on hands and knees on a flat-topped rock: 'Rock of Broad-Bottom'd Security' [cf. BMSats 10530]. On his back is an enormous money-bag: 'The Sinking-Fund - i.e - Taxations of 42 Millions pr Annum'. Petty stands astride on the guineas in the gaping mouth of the bag, shovelling a cascade of coins to greedy ministerialists who stand below, outside the stone gateway of the 'Treasury', whose wall is on the left John, a yokel, out-at-elbows, looks up to say mournfully: " - Toss away! Toss away! my good Boy! toss away!!! - oh how kind it is, to ease me of this Terrible Load!" Petty, looking down, answers: "Patience, Johnny! - ar'nt I tossing-away as fast as I can? ar'nt I reducing of your Taxes to sh/17 & 6d in the Pound? - why you ought to think yourself quite comfortable & Easy, Johnny!" Those nearest the rock are Windham and the fat Lord Temple, with his back to it, catching the coins that overflow from a great heap in the peer's robe which his uncle, Grenville, holds up. Between Grenville and Windham the Marquis of Buckingham has a brimming hat-full. Behind Buckingham' Howick holds up a large hat high above his head. Sidmouth, bending obsequiously, catches some of the overflow from Grenville's store; between him and Temple, a dog, its collar inscribed 'Vansit[tart]' gapes for the small droppings from his master's receptacle (he was Secretary of the Treasury). Behind Grenville, Ellenborough receives a heavy shower on his head. Sheridan, as Harlequin (cf. BMSat 9916), his wooden sword held behind his back, holds out with a servile gesture a (full) bonnet rouge shaped like a fool's cap. Behind him, Lauderdale, in Highland dress, holds out a Scots cap. Towering above Sheridan, Moira holds up an enormous cocked hat, trimmed with the Prince's feathers, and receives, after Grenville, the largest harvest of coin. In his right. hand are papers: 'Price of Stocks'. Between him and Ellenborough, the Duke of Clarence holds up a chamber-pot, inscribed 'Royal Jordan' [see BMSat 7909, &c.]. Behind him is the head of the Duke of York. Erskine, on the left, holds out the Purse of the Great Seal. Next him are Spencer, holding up a cocked hat, and Norfolk, holding up a punch-bowl, inscribed 'Majesty of the People', the toast given by him, which, inter alia, led to his rightemoval from the Privy Council (see BMSat 9168, &c). An aquiline profile, next Norfolk, suggests George Hanger. A youthful face on the extreme left. may indicate Lord Holland. "Fantastic insects (l.), with human heads assail a hive (r.) standing on a low and very solid wooden stand, the 'Treasury-Bench'; ministerial bees emerge to defend it. The apex of the hive is a royal crown from which sprout ears of straw. In the upper left. corner is the grotesque body of Sidmouth terminating in a clyster-pipe inscribed 'Clysteria Ministeria'; the wings are bottles inscribed 'Emetic' and 'Cathartic' [cf. BMSat 9849]. Above him flies the head of (?) Fitzpatrick between wings inscribed 'Hedge Lane' and 'Chick-lane' (London slums and resorts of prostitutes). An adjacent aquiline profile resembles George Hanger. Below, and to the right., is Lauderdale, his wings patterned with tartan. Above (r.) is Erskine, in barrister's wig and bands, both wings inscribed 'Protest'. Next (r.), Moira is supported on ostrich-feather wings, indicating the Prince of Wales (see, e.g., BMSat 10253). "Canning, as Phaeton, drives his chariot with four horses abreast on a curving track across the heavens, slanting upwards across the design from left. to r. On this are signs of the zodiac; other constellations of the zodiac are on the darkened sky, above and below the path of Phaeton; all assail him. The base of the design is part of the northern hemisphere, showing the world in flames, and flanked by the ghosts of Pitt and Fox. In the lower left. corner is the ghost of Pitt as Apollo (half length); he weeps, dropping his lyre, and raises his shroud to gaze up at his son, Phaeton. He is surrounded by heavy clouds. In the opposite corner, the head and shoulders of Fox as 'Pluto', holding a pitchfork, emerge from flames: he looks up with sinister anxiety at the conflict in the heavens. Canning's head is the centre of an irradiated sun: 'The Sun of Anti-Jacobinism.' He is heroic, youthful, and naked, except for floating draperies. Above him (l.) is a crescent moon. His horses have human heads set behind equine jaws and nostrils which jet flame. They are (l. to r.): Hawkesbury, Perceval, Castlereagh (with a profile expressive of nobility), Eldon (sub-human). Flame streams backwards from the chariot wheels; the wheels pass over the (dismantled) scales, 'Libra-Britannicus' [British justice], one scale inscribed 'Copenhagen'. Close behind the chariot the British Lion, 'Leo Britannicus', rushes furiously; on the chariot's track, facing the horses, is the Ram (faintly sketched). Behind this is Taurus, a ferocious Irish bull, snorting fire at the horses. His collar is inscribed 'Erin go Bragh'; from it flies a rosary; to his tail is tied a pot inscribed 'Emancipation'. The most conspicuous assailant of the horses is 'Scorpio Broad-Bottom', with the head of Grenville, the words inscribed on the two ferocious claws, in which his arms terminate. (He is the Scorpion who 'bends out his arms into two bows, . . . [and] spreads over the space of two signs'.) The body spirals into a barbed tail, emitting names close to Fox. Smaller claws terminate in human heads (below, l. to r.): Temple, Spencer (both spitting fire), Bedford; (above, l. to r.): Moira, Tierney. Covering Grenville's posterior is an irregular circle. In its centre is an irradiated ring enclosing a chalice with the Host; round this are irradiated heads: Grafton, Stanhope, Derby, Carlisle, Norfolk, Holland.
