Abstract:
Manuscript on paper, in several different hands, of a collection of about 69 poems and prose entries, primarily on philosophical, religious, and metaphysical subjects. Prose pieces in the volume include a copy of Ethica Compendium, by Johann Stier; and The Life of Richard Marsh D. D. Archdeacon of York Vicar of Halifax, and Chaplain to King Charles 2nd From a Manuscript Written By His Descendant. Verses include numerous poems by John Donne; Song To A Coy Lady by Alexander Brome; and other poems by Cowley, Thomas Otway, and Richard Fanshaw. Pasted in on p. 263 is a contemporary MS copy of a poem, "Rise oh my sone wth thy desires to heaven," which the writer attributes to Sir Henry Wotton. The manuscript also includes a list of Middle English words titled "A few words from Urry's Chaucer that seem to have furnished several English families with surnames."

Abstract:
Manuscripts, in different hands, of a collection of several dozen primarily satirical and anonymous poems, many scatological. The majority of the poems are political satires, especially concerning the abdication of King James II and the accession of King William III; other targets include Charles Montagu, Earl of Halifax; religious zeal; and France. Other poems satirize women, including Barbara Villiers (afterwards Palmer), Countess of Castlemaine and Duchess of Cleveland, with reference to her affair with rope-dancer Jacob Hall; Mrs. Moseley and her link with Anthony Ashley Cooper, 1st Baron Ashley and 1st Earl of Shaftesbury; and women's conduct generally. The collection also includes a broadside printing of Packington's Pound, as well as numerous satirical songs sung to its tune.

Abstract:
A collection of copies of about 36 English poems, in various hands, many of them satirical and bawdy. Political and social satires include Thomas Brown's Melting Downe The Plate, Or The Pisspotts Farewell; John Wilmot, Earl of Rochester's Satire Against Reason and Mankind; and an excerpt from Samuel Butler's Hudibras. The volume also contains several sexually explicit satires against women, as well as numerous serious poems, which include an excerpt from Contention Of Ajax And Ulysses by James Shirley, attributed in the manuscript to the Earl of Orrery; an excerpted description of heaven from Abraham Cowley's Davideis; and John Denham's Cooper's Hill.

Abstract:
Anonymous manuscript collection of verse and prose by various authors. The volume includes "A Peaceable and Friendly Address to the Nonconformists written upon their desiring an Act of Toleration without the Sacramental Test," a possibly unpublished poem by Edmund Waller (1606-87) and works by Rochester, Dryden, Roscommon, Congreve, Sidney Godolphin, Addison and others. A later owner, signing himself Sam.[?pson] Estwick on the endpaper, has used the leaves at the end of the book for historical, scriptural and legal memoranda, and has on p. 37 made a note on "Some anthems proper for our Choire..."

Abstract:
Manuscript, in multiple hands, of a collection of several dozen secular and lighthearted poems, primarily on the subject of love, though a few poems concern drinking and tobacco. The manuscript contains numerous love poems by Sir John Suckling and Thomas Carew; other poets in the volume include Sir Robert Ayton, John Wilbye, and John Fletcher. An anonymous poem consists of a pastoral dialogue between Phyllis and Strephon; several are addressed to Chloris; and numerous others are set to the tunes of other songs.

Manuscript on paper, in a single hand, of various texts pertaining to theological inquiry. Contents include a series of letters between "W.S" and "T.P" debating the issue of free will; arguments for the baptism of infants; letters from "W.S" criticizing "G.S.," a "Taylor, & ye most debauch'd villain in ye Countrey, & now turn'd Preacher;" a debate concerning how to keep the Sabbath after having sailed to America, accompanied by a diagram illustrating how ships sailing eastward may gain a day; a dialogue between Montezuma, Cortez, a Jesuit and an Indian priest, which is extremely similar to a scene in John Dryden's Indian Emperor; and a "Dialogue between ye Angel Gabriel & Adam in Paradise, concerning free will & Predestination" in blank verse, roughly parallel to a scene in Dryden's State of Innocence.

Manuscript, in a single hand, of a collection of 239 political poems expressing loyalty to James II and entreaties for him to resume the English throne. Titles of such poems include His majestie's royal farewell to England and The confinement by Sir Robert L'Estrange. Other entries consist of songs in praise of King James, including A health to the King's return; A song to the tune of the King shall enjoy his own again; and A loyal Jacobean song. Many other poems lampoon or eulogize specific figures, such as Elegy on Mr. Ashton; An acrostic on John Tillotson; and an Epitaph on Algernon Sidney. Numerous poems mock the figures of William and Mary, including On the coronation of K. William and Q. Mary; and On the late metamorphosis of an old picture of Oliver Cromwells into a new picture of King William, the head chang'd the hierogliphicks remaining; others satirize the Protestant Church, Parliament, the Church of England, and the nonjuror controversy that followed the Revolution of 1688.
