Abstract:
A plebeian family of 'cits' drive in a rough two-wheeled cart (aping a fashionable gig) drawn by a clumsy carthorse. The man drives, wearing cocked hat and top-boots; his wife, wearing large feathers in her small straw cap, holds up a fan. Both are absurdly complacent. A boy and girl are crammed in. Behind rides a fat and grinning footman, with plodding dog. On the extreme right a newsboy with the 'London Gazette' blows his horn. Behind (left) is an open doorway inscribed 'Mash Brewer'; within are casks. The wall is inscribed 'Puddle Dock', and on it are two bills: 'Theatre Royal Covent Garden the Comedy of the Bankrupt with High Life Below Stairs and A House to be let in Grosvenor Square Suitable for a Genteel Family' (they appear to be bound for this house).

"A portrait-painter painting a family group of a man and wife and their little boy. The group (right) is raised on a low semicircular platform, the couple sit on a high-backed settee without arms, the little boy on a stool in front of his mother. The child, though in his ordinary clothes, is holding a cupid's bow and a sheaf of arrows (reminiscent of the family portrait in the 'Vicar of Wakefield'); a large quiver holding arrows is slung across his shoulders, a wreath is on his head; he yawns violently. The man, in profile to the left, is obese and wears a short bushy wig, a dove sits on his left wrist; only the toes of his shoes reach the ground. His wife sits on his right holding a dove on her right hand; she turns towards her husband, looking straight forward with a fixed and painful smile; she wears ringlets and a cap of lace and ribbons on her high-dressed hair. The artist (left) stands at his easel which supports a large canvas and is placed close to his sitters. He wears spectacles, a bag-wig, and ruffled shirt, and holds a palette in his left hand. He looks towards his sitters with an insinuating smile, which, together with his attitude and the figure of the man sketched on the canvas, shows that he is intent on flattery. An Italian family, in a poverty-stricken room, practise for opera. A young man stands full-face, singing, his fingers interlaced across his chest. He wears an open, ruffled shirt, awaistcoat, breeches, and ungartered stockings. To his right an old man plays an enormous 'cello. To his left a middle-aged man, seated in profile singing, plays a low harpsichord; he wears open ruffled shirt and breeches, with bare legs. Beside him on the extreme left a little boy dressed in a shirt plays the violin. On the extreme right a pretty young woman sits over the fire with an infant on her knee; she holds out a cloth to dry, looking over her shoulder to sing. Her score ('Affetuoso') is pinned to the chimney-piece, on which stands a crucifix with a tankard, &c. A lean greyhound howls up the chimney. All but the old man have fashionably dressed hair, and a certain elegance. The room is lit from an open casement window (left); there are dark cast shadows and the bare room has no ceiling. Beside him on the extreme left a little boy dressed in a shirt plays the violin. On the extreme right a pretty young woman sits over the fire with an infant on her knee; she holds out a cloth to dry, looking over her shoulder to sing. Her score ('Affetuoso') is pinned to the chimney-piece, on which stands a crucifix with a tankard, &c. A lean greyhound howls up the chimney. All but the old man have fashionably dressed hair, and a certain elegance. The room is lit from an open casement window (left); there are dark cast shadows and the bare room has no ceiling. On the wall are a print of 'Vestris' dancing, a sword, a play-bill: 'l'Avaro Deluso' (opera by Paisiello, libretto by Vulpius), and a bunch of farthing dips; on the window ledge a cracked mirror, cocked hat, bottles, &c. The eleventh drawing in a series of twelve that follow a tradition of producing a series on modern morals, a tradition established earlier in the 18th century by artists such as William Hogarth. In this series, twin brothers are bestowed an equal fortune. One brother, Edward, husbands his wealth and on his death, passes on his fortune; whilst the other brother, Charles, squanders his, leaving his family destitute and In this eleventh drawing, Edward is shown on his death bed, his grieving widow at his bedside, their two children at her knee. The elegant bedroom is decorated with a mirror and clock on the wall beside a tall secretary with a bust on top. Two men sit at a table as they look on the scene with sombre faces; one of the men is engaged in writing a long document (Edward's will).

The background is the corner of a brick house (right) showing part of a bow-window inscribed "Dealer in Coffee", and a gate inscribed "Bagnigge Wells" with an ogive-shaped decoration surmounting the architrave. Abstract:
A gentleman in a riding habit (left) rides his horse through the door of a cottage startling the family who sit at their dinner table. The man's hunting dog jumps at the young son who sits closest to the door; he screams in terror, his fork and knife frozen part way to his mouth and his leg thrown up, spilling a pitcher from the table. The mother raises up her arms in terror, letting the cutlery fly; in her mouth is a gnawed bone. Behind her is a wall with shelves lined with dishes and mugs. Her husband (right), back to the viewer, turns to the intruder pointing a long spear. His knife and fork are on the floor below his chair. The gentleman addresses the cottagers, "Och, dont disturb y'rselves my Nonies I only want to know whether you cou'd be after informing me where I cou'd meet with a decent night's lodging for man and beast."
