- In a large square overlooked by a row of buildings, a central gallows is surrounded by large numbers of armed men in guard-like rows, behind whom crowds are massed. The hanging has already occurred; the two condemned men's bodies, with hoods over their heads, are suspended below the open trap door of the gallows

- Title from caption below image., "Noisy Carier's Book & Stationery Co."--Lower right corner., and Joseph Hetherington and Philander Brace were each accused of murdering two men in two separate incidents, and were executed by the San Francisco Committee of Vigilance.
