"Soldiers march impassively in double file through a crowded street, and over the prostrate bodies of those whom they have overthrown. Military arrogance and foppishness are personified by the officer, much caricatured, with a grotesquely elongated waist (cf. British Museum Satires No. 7352). He places one toe on the body of a fish-woman who lies on her back, her legs much exposed. His outstretched right leg is poised above a crouching woman who tries to protect her barrow of vegetables. Two men holding muskets precede the officer; one tramples on the face of an infant. The officer is followed by a man carrying a pike, behind whom march six soldiers in double file carrying muskets with fixed bayonets. All march ruthlessly, eyes front, regardless of the havoc they are causing. A porter lies on the ground clutching a broken wooden case faintly inscribed 'Mr . . . Silversmith'; from it pour plate and jewels. The porter's knee is badly damaged, and his knot has been knocked from his shoulders. A milliner or courtesan lies on her back clutching the hair of a barber who clasps her leg. On the extreme right a prostrate woman tries to protect her infant, and a newsboy with his horn and a sheaf of the 'Morning Herald' tries to escape from the trampling soldiers. Other victims between the soldiers and the wall are a woman with a crutch, a shoeblack, a man with a tray of rolls. A pair of beseeching hands and two female legs (right) waving in the air add to the turmoil, which is accentuated by the writhing forms of the fish which fall from the fishwoman's basket. As Charlemaine not only conquered Italy, but the whole of Germany, and left the Imperial dignity hereditary in the Sovereigns of France, it is indispensably necessary to obtain possession of Germany, in order to support the dignity of the Gallic empire.' "Two designs placed side by side, the title so arranged that 'The Contrast' applies to both, the first four and last two words to the two designs respectively. [1] A scene outside Jaffa where the French flag flies from a fort on a rock at whose base are hospital tents (left), in which the sick can be seen. In the foreground Napoleon (a poor portrait) points with an imperious gesture to a bottle of 'Opium' in the hand of a distressed doctor in civilian dress. He says: "Don't talk to me of Humanity & the feelings of a generous heart, I say Poison those Sick dogs they are a burthen to me, & can no longer fight my Battles!!! I say destroy them - As for those Turks, them up in the Garrison, turn all the Guns upon them, Men, Women, & Children & blow them to atoms, they are too bold & resolute for me to suffer them to live, they are in my Way." In the middle distance (left) is a body of Turks, their arms tied behind them, guarded by a French soldier who points at Napoleon. "The Queen and Alderman Wood head a procession through the City, all riding asses (cf. British Museum Satires No. 13918, &c.). They advance towards a group of Radical Reformers with placards who wave their hats. Notes below the design divided by vertical lines indicate the characters; these are centred by a description of the Queen, enclosed in an oval: 'Her most Gracious M.....y Columbine B--i, alias Mother Red Cap 2nd [cf. British Museum Satires No. 13975], Queen of all the Radicals, Whigs, Hoaxers &c B......i in all her looks and Brandy in her eye [see British Museum Satires No. 14175].' Wood is dressed as a jester in party-coloured clothes, red and yellow, here indicating the royal liveries used by the Queen; he takes the Queen's right hand; his right hand is on his breast, and he looks with eager anticipation at the Reformers. Behind him is the profile of Lady Ann Hamilton, who plays a fiddle; she wears a much-feathered (military) Scots cap. They are: 'Absolute Wisdom [see British Museum Satires No. 13899] alias Mathew Jackall Master of the Ceremonies--A rare specimen of disinterestedness--a keen eye for the Loaves & Fishes', and 'Lady Ann Bagpipe principal Scotch Fiddler [cf. British Museum Satires No. 14110, &c.] to her M.....y with an accompaniment of All round the Rad pole how we Flock.' The Queen wears a red cap with the décolletée over-dress with frilled trousers of British Museum Satires No. 14103, a large miniature of Bergami (see British Museum Satires No. 13858) hanging from her waist. She holds the tail of the ass which she bestrides with ungartered stocking, her shoe having fallen to the ground; on her saddle-cloth: 'B B Knight of St Columbine' [see British Museum Satires No. 14120]. A fat décolletée woman, also in a red cap, rides just behind her; she is Countess Oldi, Bergami's sister (who was with the Queen in London), described as 'Countess Patois Bourgois The Elegant & Accomplished Sister of Bart.....o The Fancy-Man.' On the Queen's left rides a thin young man, Wood's son, in quasi-dandy dress with red and yellow jacket, holding a banner inscribed 'All Majesty & Grace'; he registers alarm at a small barking dog which causes his ass to stop and kick. He is 'The Dandy Standard Bearer alias Young Absolute'. Just behind a youth, Willy Austin, rides, holding two children before him: 'Billy By-Blow of Black-heath [see British Museum Satires No. 12027] in charge of the Nursery.' Next him is a man wearing a braided coat or tunic and holding up a flag inscribed 'Innocence'. He is not described, and is perhaps Keppel Craven. Close behind him is a turbaned Moor or negro (cf. British Museum Satires No. 13929), in red and yellow. They are followed by two naval officers, one in civilian dress and wearing a Maltese cross. They hold a banner between them: 'Rights and Privileges.' They are 'Lieutt Humm'en [Hownam] 1st Champion & Knight of St Columbine' and 'Lieutt Flim Flam [Flinn] 2nd Champion & Knight of the Smelling Bottle'. The last ass in the procession is ridden by a naked Bacchus, a wine-bottle in each hand, and a half-draped Woman who puts an arm round his neck. They are: 'Two Proteges and Bosom Friends of her M.....y'. The procession continues, receding in perspective to the extreme right, as a dense crowd with bludgeons, banners, and staves supporting caps of Liberty. The banners are 'Anarchy', 'Riot' (both tricolour), 'Disaffection', 'Immorality', 'Indecency'. Description: 'A long Train of concomitant Blessings to add to the Peace, Comfort, Relief, and Happiness of that first rate Martyr Broad-shouldered and patient Bull.' The radicals face the procession in the foreground (left) and are more realistically drawn than the other figures. On the extreme left is Hunt, smartly dressed, but with a chain dangling from one wrist. He is 'The Hero of Spa and Peters Fields with a day rule from Ilchester'. Next him is Wilson: 'Sir Robert Lavalette [see British Museum Satires No. 12706, &c.] of Southwark KMT [sic] & MP'. Beside him is Hobhouse: 'Jack Cam Westminster's Darling' [see British Museum Satires No. 13501]. In front of Wilson is Sir Charles Wolseley, wearing a striped straight-jacket over fashionable dress, his arms (compulsorily) folded. He is 'The Legislatorial Attorney for Brummigum [see British Museum Satires No. 13251] with a day rule from St Lukes' [a lunatic asylum]. Behind him is Cobbett: 'William Tompaine [see British Museum Satires No. 13525] Cobt Weathercock' [see British Museum Satires No. 14032, &c.]. In front of him is Burdett (now with frontal baldness in place of the former prominent lock of hair), standing between Waddington, a ragged, dwarfish fellow holding up a placard inscribed 'Long Live Mother Red Cap', and Harrison, a man with chained wrists holding up a cap of Liberty on a staff. These three are: 'Sir Frank Demagogue Westminster's Jewel'; 'Little Wadd' [see British Museum Satires No. 14261]; 'Parson Har . . s . n Founder of the Sect of Radical Methodists, with a day rule from Durance Vile' [see British Museum Satires No. 13254]. The last also supports a tall pike which dominates the group, its head inscribed 'Rallying Point'; to this are tied a cap of Liberty and two banners: 'Revolution' (red) and 'Radical Reform' (blue); the shaft transfixes a wig (emblem of the Whigs). Hunt, Wilson, Cobbett, and Burdett wave white top-hats (emblem of Hunt and the radicals) with red favours; Wilson and Waddington wear similar hats. All wear large red disks on the left breast. From the crowd standing behind them emerge placards: [1] a Harlequin pattern inscribed 'Q Columbine for ever' [see British Museum Satires No. 14120]; [2] a wig, inscription: 'Q a handle to the Wig'; [3] 'Automaton for ever' [see British Museum Satires No. 14120]; [4] 'Poll Acre [polacca, see British Museum Satires No. 13818] for Ever'. The farther side of the route is lined with butchers shouting and making rough music with marrow-bones and cleavers, as at Westminster elections. Behind these a dense crowd of spectators is indicated. Behind are the houses and (shuttered) shops of 'Bridge Street'; cheering spectators lean from all the windows and watch from the roofs. The plot hatched by a mother to marry her daughter to an old wealthy colonel is discovered. Both the mother and daughter are fashionably dressed in large dressess, hats and large sleeves. The mother stands on a veranda looking down at her daughter seated with a portfolio in her lap; she turns back to look at her mother raising a lorgnette to look up at her. In the speech balloon above her head, the mother is shown to say, "Julia, love, as Colonel Ingot has amassed a vast fortune in India, I really think him worth your attention. I have sent to the Music Seller for every thing Indian. Sing nothing else love, if you can bear a couple of Cashmeres on do & complain of the chilliness of the Climate, look into Guthrie for a few hard Bengal names & at dinner eat nothing but a little Currey, you can have refreshments in your dressing room love. "A stout and comely lady stands at the door of an ornamentally rustic cottage, shaking a cloth from which tiny officers leap out, holding money-bags. The cloth is inscribed in large letters 'Pin Money instead of Allowance'. She says: "This is a profitable Plan of his and pays me a Devilish deal better than he can, besides the Patronage!!" Five elderly officers of normal size (right) watch their pigmy rivals with consternation. One looks through his glass, saying, "To waste ones health in unwholesome Climates an then fail of promotion because we cannot fee ****** or Army Agents Agents.!!" Another says: "Mother Careys Chickens by - then we shall have a storm indeed!" A third exclaims: "What to spend our lives in the service of our Country, and to be thus degraded by a parcel of Boys!!" He has a wooden leg and a patch over one eye. Another had lost his right arm, and the group seem hardly fit for active service. The 'boys' wear fashionable crescent-shaped cocked hats with plumes, the others old-fashioned hats with cockade, loop, and button. Over the door is inscribed in large letters '... mus Cottage'. It has the ornamental Gothic windows with leaded panes and thatched roof of fashionable rusticity. Beside it is a weeping willow. Below the title: 'NB these Birds have lately been seen hovering about the Horse Guards'. Below the design: 'a Storm Finch, or stormy petterel (the Mother Careys Chickens of the Sailors). "Six pairs of persons converse, arranged in two rows, words etched above the head of the speaker. A plebeian-looking young man, fashionably dressed, and an elderly Scot sit facing each other. The former says: "You mun know Sir I have an idera [sic] of being made a member of Parlymint, so I wants to larn a little Horotry". The answer: "Depend upon it Mon while ye hae such a t'wang [sic] with you--you'l nere proo-noonce the angligh [sic] tongue as I do, wi awe purity". A dwarfish officer wearing an enormous cocked hat looks up at a corporal, saying, "As I am shortly to have a company--I want to know something about my Exercise". Corporal: "I'll soon set your eminence to rights in that respect, but I think your honor had better first take a little practice, as a Grenadier in the prussian service". A slim man in black bows to a clumsy fat parson, saying, "Sir as I am about to enter into Orders I wish to have a few lessons on the graces of the Pulpit". Answer: "Depend upon it I will make you perfect from the unfolding a white cambric, to the display of a diamond ring". "The Regent, in tight and dandified admiral's full-dress uniform, wearing a cocked hat, is carried by two bathing women (cf. British Museum Satires no. 8432) from a bathing-machine (right) to the barge 'Royal George', for transit to the royal yacht. Just behind is the machine, inscribed 'The Best Machines in Brighton'; from it two naked girls look towards the departing prince. A sailor standing in the barge, which flies the Royal Standard, seizes the Regent's ankles; one foot is gouty and swollen; he says to the man standing behind him (left): "My eyes jack this here craft will never carry him--we should bring the sheers and reeve a tackle for him in the long boat--!!" A naval officer stands beside the sailor, and shouts an order to the man behind: "shove the Barge further a stern & be d--d to you--what you about a head there." The Regent has an arm round the neck of each woman and grasps the plump breast of the nearer one who is comely. He says: "Do my dear Girls put me on board safe, I shall Tell Paget to give you some Grog--I have been almost suffocated in that infernal Bathing Machine--mind my foot." One bathing-woman says: "Faith he's no joke Judy the devil a heavier Burthen in all the country"; her comelier companion answers: "By my own soul I'd rather carry such a nice neat beautiful young Gentleman, than the best basket of mackerel that ever was at Billingsgate." The sailor on the left uses a pole to manipulate the barge, the bow of which is cut off by the left margin. He wears a tight blue jacket to the (pinched) waist, with red collar and cuffs, white trousers, and top-hat with a badge: 'Royal George'. "Mrs. Clarke stands just within the House of Commons triumphing over her opponents and victims. She strikes a member (Croker) with a rapier, while holding up in her left hand a letter headed My dear Mrs Clark. She tramples on a military officer who lies prone; a paper under his hand is inscribed Genl [Clav]ering. Her antagonists have dropped their swords, which lie broken on the floor. Her large muff lies beside her with a bundle of Love Letters. Croker tries to escape, exclaiming, By Jasus she'll give us 100 Cuts in 60 thrusts. Perceval rushes off, with a mutilated hand, saying, I am Struck dumb, and lost my thumb! I Percieve all. Another (the Attorney-General) exclaims: Oh! dear! Oh dear! she has cut off my Ear Ex officio. A little man whose nose has been cut off, exclaims: What dreadfull blows--Witness my Nose, my Honeys. In his pocket is a paper: Memorandum for Mr Hague [see British Museum Satires No. 11211]. A tall man (Yorke, see British Museum Satires No. 11535) shouts, raising his arms: Take her into custody--She will be to much for us--send her to York Jail. Shadowy figures watch the encounter.
